Summer 2011 Transfer Window Part Two

6 players certainly makes for an exciting summer and hopefully an exciting season ahead.

The stand out position there is left winger. Not a priority for me, certainly doesnt warrent £7million spent on it. Olssons best position is left wing, meaning this is likely to restrict him to left back. Good for overlapping, but bad for defending.

I hope that we bring in 2 central midfielders, as we are way short of decent options there.

Yes--why don't we just sign a left-back and Ollson can stay where he's most successful. Too simple?

You don't have to borrow to afford a 45-50 million spree.

You already have Jones's money and the 'window by window' injection of cash which can be brought forward.

There WILL be sales as well - some you want, maybe some you don't.

However to land the players you are currently after - in quality and quantity - it is going to mean 45-50 million being spent.

I am just glad there weren't messageboards around in the early days of Jack Walker.

No doubt there would have been ######-taking when you tried to buy England's skipper.

Or worked your way down an all-star list until you got David Speedie.

This is probably the biggest transfer earthquake in these parts since those times. Hold on. It might get bumpy and explosive.

With all due repsect nicko, Jack transformed this club from such a low base. He put his money where his mouth was and was a bona fide fan with no aim but to make Rovers the best.

Venky's have taken on a much more successful oufit and would always attract more scrutiny than Jack would.

Its all very exciting, however have we actually made a move for anyone? Are we likely to be seeing a new signing in the next week?

Not going to judge Venky's until Sept 1st. Them being prepared to spend £40m+ is very encouraging but that'll be irrelevant if we dont turn that budget into decent signings. Cautiously optimistic. People criticising this must be wishing we were back under the Trust when our last big transfer deal was £6m for Kalinic two summers ago..

Can't knock the owners for the ambition. They're certainly doing enough in my eyes to say that they're serious about the club and want it to succeed. The next 2 months are going to be huge.

Completely different Nicko, Jack was a genuine fan of the club.

I dont think that would have stopped people being cynical. Jack is a legend at this club because he won us the league and rebuilt this club from the bottom up, but at the time, before we won the league, before Ewood was re-built, I reckon that alot of the promises he made were laughed at by plenty of Rovers fans..

We appear to have offered a contract to Benjani and he appears to be likely to accept it. Does that count as our first big signing?

There's a world of difference between saying that we are "going to spend an extra 50 million" and we are "going to buy 50 millions worth of players", the only measure worth a damn in these circumstances is net-net. To replace any players who leave with players of the same quality will cost the same amount of money in a fair market. We may buy a centre back of the same quality as Jones for 20 million but we won't have improved the team, the bank balance wouldn't have changed yet we'd have 'spent' 20 million.

Creaming ourselves over a 50 million spend might give a nice warm feeling inside but if we have to sell 45 millions worth of players (Jones, Samba, Peds, Hoilett - whoever) then nothing has improved, we've just rearranged the chairs on the Titantic. 50 million of new money - well then you've got my attention.

I think Venky's will spend above our historical long run average (net) but these big headline numbers are just plain misleading, IMO.

Anyone care to take a guess at the final outcome, net spending wise. My guess is sub 10 million cash outflow. This is based on the original fanfare of 5 million per window and that we didn't spend anything much in the last window. That said given the Venky's fascination with marquee signings for branding/publicity purposes then they may well have a one off war chest put aside somewhere for that 'Messi moment'.

All good stuff and all to be welcomed/applauded but just let's get a bit of perspective on what's being discussed.

This.

I'll go with your £10m NET spend prediction which will mean F.A to spend in January.

Jack took over in mid-season, rather like Venky's. He put money into the club right away so that Mimms, Dobson and Livingstone arrived to ensure we stayed in the Second Division. He gave Mackay money to spend but the manager wasn't a big enough name to attract players and so he moved to bring in Kenny and Ray - two of the most respected figures in the game at that time. I don't think any fans doubted what Jack was about from the very beginning. Where he had the advantage over Venky's was that he was already well known in the town and people knew what kind of guy he was. I don't think anyone doubted that the club was in safe hands from the minute that Jack got involved.

To answer a few questions at once...

VUCINIC - you will know a lot more about that one in the next day or so...it has been a crash course in the size of fees, wages and messing around for the new owners.

MIRANDA - time ticking...still a live project.

RUSSIAN RIGHT BACK - inquiry made, fee quoted...proving tough...but money talks.

LEFT WINGER - inquiry made, other clubs in...a bit expensive and an auction doesn't help.

Once the Vucinic and Miranda things are settled you will either have two top players or move to the next targets.

When you are going for the level of players currently being pursued you are going to find that other clubs want them too. So it is going to cost. Probably more than anyone bargained for. But with all of the big hitters in just now there is an awful lot of buzz going on.

SAMBA - if he goes it will be for loads...

JERMAINE JONES - still haggling over prices...there is a genuine rival for him too.

It's busy and a wee bit mental. Let's leave that as an update for now and getting on with the calls myself.

Not in the slightest - Also i thought Nicko wrote an article saying he was off?

The LT is carrying an interview with Benjani this morning in which he states that he has been offered a new deal at Ewood and is looking forward to returning. Benjani hopes to sign the new deal within the next couple of days.

Benji, Roberts, Kalinic, Rochina and potentially 2 new ones. Junior's best pos is behind the striker in a free role and Formica adding to the list as well. Too many players, Benji shouldn't really be getting a look in. Waste of wages.
