I think I may have also fallen ill with the wegotalotacashitus Neal.

5.5 has to be tops.

Ha! Yeah it seems to be everywhere in these here parts chap. I think i would just appreciate some of that sensible attitude towards transfers that John Williams brought to the club. Other clubs obviously know we have money and I for one don't want us to be naive and robbed blind. I am moving with times and they may be exciting ones (potentially) but i just want it to be spent wisely. I would like very much not be in another relegation battle next season thinking... How did we get here again? And... What did we spend £50 million on?

Best transfer business this window so far must be West Ham's capture of Kevin Nolan from Newcastle for a reported fee of £1.5m rising to £4m over time including add-ons. Nolan is 28, a leader on the pitch and in the dressing-room and scored 12 goals from midfield last season. He would have been a fantastic addition to our squad.

By comparison, Jones is 30, injury prone and is overpriced anything more than £3m.

Sounds like we will be paying over the odds in fees and wages to get our targets.

Has to be I suppose when your battling with clubs in the CL, EL and the more fashionable clubs, rather than the most succesful town team in England.

Not to mention the shoite night life in our town. ;)

Bye the bye, David Lowe has joined the coaching staff from Tranmere Rovers.

Even though I was a fan of Jones when he was here and thought he was a key player for us, I think £5.5 million is a bit steep. I thought £4 million would have been enough. He couldn't get a game for Schalke because they didn't think he was good enough. Now they are placing a big fee on him. Funny how transfers work!

That's usually why a built in fee is agreed upon with a loan, however, for some reason or other, we couldn't have Jones with any such agreement. Strange one really considering he wasn't only here to cover for injuries but was actually filling a noticeable void.

At any rate, signing Jones would be a good piece of business for Rovers at the right price....5.5 million tops.

I'd go £7mil and pay slightly over the odds.

Proving the old adage - a fool and his money are soon parted.

Moving on, I hear also that Ashley Young is in Manchester tonight with a view to signing for United for a reported £16m. United will have spent £33m so far and presumably will be spending again as Nasri and Modric are also in their sights. This is what proper football clubs do - identify their targets early and go out and get their man.

Which reminds me - where's the money ?

Wasn't someone in the Liverpool know on before saying there was no chance he was going and he would be the last one out the door? Strange how things change when you get a PL winning manager in charge.

Jim, genuine question here. Why do you support Rovers? You seem to despise everything we do or don't do.

To set 'proper club' Man Utd as our benchmark the year after a relegation scrap is a big ask.

everything is over priced these days. get with it for christ sakes

Lets see just how good the Raos and their advisors are at negotiating a good deal for the club here, anything above £3.5m would have to be deemed as too high given his age.

Thats not really fair JAL, if Roma are in and offer the asking price then Schalke are hardly going to accept £2m less off us.

It's just how much they back the manager.

By illegal means or otherwise.

They're spending because three of their best players have retired in Neville, Scholes and Van Der Saar. They're spending because they HAVE to. We're lucky to have only lost one player right now, and need a couple of decent players to fill the gaps.

You look at how much they're spending, and look how much they'll recoup from selling Nani, which is looking quite likely.

We aren't Manchester United. Never will be.

This is a great test for all concerned TCO.

United knew the players they wanted well before the season ended and have gone out and and signed them but as usual we seem to have "targets" that may or may not come to fruition and rarely do. Others clubs have also been making statements of intent by signing players quickly. Now that we apparently have money to spend it would be good to see Rovers do the same for a change- while of course not over-paying for average players such as Jones.

Agreed.

I would love Jones here and but think £5m is certainly top end of what I would pay, you would hope there is a list of alternatives but a player of his kind is essential one way or another should we continue with 4-5-1 or similar. I personally think NZonzi could play that role with a couple of more probing players in front but they would have to be good ones (or Nzonzi plus a Krancjar type with Hoilett in front)

I agree about paying over the odds for players who aren't worth it. But Utd is a poor example. It's easy to do your business early when you are newly crowned champions. Factor in that the squad needed refreshing for at least 12 months and it begins to seem obvious that they knew their targets in advance. Besides utd there aren't any other clubs doing business which worry me in the slightest.

There's varying reports as to what formation we'll be playing next season but I think if it's gonna be 4-5-1 we should splash a bit extra to get Jones. We looked solid in the run in to the season because we had a good spine in Jones, Samba, N'Zonzi and J Jones. We know what Jones can do so we should make an effort to keep what remains of that spine together.

It doesn't matter. Other clubs have already identified and secured their targets. Take Sunderland as an example instead then if you want. Jim can make some strange points at times, but this isn't one of them.

We struggled last season, we desperately need to improve the squad, but we still don't have any concrete targets or offers being made. Given we have a reported budget of 50mil, I would have expected us to be a lot more active in the market right now than we appear to be.

Alou Diarra is five times the player Jones is yet Bordeaux are selling for bout 4 mil or under,5.5 million for a player with average skills bar being a workhorse and good tackler is way over the top,we should just move on maybe stick a bid in for Valencia's Maduro or Benoit Pedretti who for me is the player we are missing, fantastic range of passing.would Drogba consider joining us if venky's offered him the same amount of money they were willing to pay Ronaldinho. If Chelsea sign Falcao he will be surplus to requirements.Apologies Pedretti signed for Lille a few days ago for a pittance, good players are available early but clubs like us like to wait, makes no sense to me,get them signed and ready when the team reports back for training.
