Agreed.

I would love Jones here and but think £5m is certainly top end of what I would pay, you would hope there is a list of alternatives but a player of his kind is essential one way or another should we continue with 4-5-1 or similar. I personally think NZonzi could play that role with a couple of more probing players in front but they would have to be good ones (or Nzonzi plus a Krancjar type with Hoilett in front)

Agree on the 5m being a bit much... But don't agree that going to 5.5m depends on the Venkys backing the manager.. he might just decide that there are better options at that price.

Toulalan went for 8m or so to a not so glamourous club so there must be other options out there how much would the likes of M'Mila cost?

Would not mind us jumping in early on Matuidi mind..

Alou Diarra is five times the player Jones is yet Bordeaux are selling for bout 4 mil or under,5.5 million for a player with average skills bar being a workhorse and good tackler is way over the top,we should just move on maybe stick a bid in for Valencia's Maduro or Benoit Pedretti who for me is the player we are missing, fantastic range of passing.would Drogba consider joining us if venky's offered him the same amount of money they were willing to pay Ronaldinho. If Chelsea sign Falcao he will be surplus to requirements.Apologies Pedretti signed for Lille a few days ago for a pittance, good players are available early but clubs like us like to wait, makes no sense to me,get them signed and ready when the team reports back for training.

Alou would be a good shout def better than JJ at that price.

At least with Jones you know for certain that he can cut it in the Premier League and that he fits in with the players at the club (or at least if he doesn't that it doesn't affect his performance).

I'd rather spend 5.5 million on a dead cert than spend a little less on a risk. Especially when we are supposedly bringing in 6 new players this window. Any chance of a bit more stability is worth 2 million more (or whatever the difference is) if you ask me.

Football players are people, not just physical attributes. Just look at Kalinic, Yorke and Barry Ferguson from our recent past.

It doesn't matter. Other clubs have already identified and secured their targets. Take Sunderland as an example instead then if you want. Jim can make some strange points at times, but this isn't one of them.

We struggled last season, we desperately need to improve the squad, but we still don't have any concrete targets or offers being made. Given we have a reported budget of 50mil, I would have expected us to be a lot more active in the market right now than we appear to be.

I almost listed Sunderland as an exception to the rule. But then i remembered Steve Bruce tends to ejaculate constantly during the transfer windows, signing as many no-marks as he can get his hands on. I'm sorry, but i'd sooner we took our time and securred the right players than adopt the Bruce approach. Lets not forget they received the Bent money in January so a budget is likely to have been known for months.

Now, if you'd said Newcastle you might have had a point. However, they were also in a situation where they knew they needed to bring in certain players. They also had £35m from the Carroll sale in January. So, they would have had time to draw up a list of targets with a set budget in mind. We flogged young Jones days ago, so, consequently we have had to tinker with our plans.

FFS its only the end of June! We've got a wee while yet. Very few people on here know the fulL extent of what is going on behind the scenes anyway. We could well have made offers for all i, you or anyone else knows. Lets just see how it pans out and not gaze enviously at what the likes of Sunderland are doing.

United knew the players they wanted well before the season ended and have gone out and and signed them but as usual we seem to have "targets" that may or may not come to fruition and rarely do. Others clubs have also been making statements of intent by signing players quickly. Now that we apparently have money to spend it would be good to see Rovers do the same for a change- while of course not over-paying for average players such as Jones.

Signing players early.. who what.. did I miss a flury of transfer activity? Arsenal, Villa, Everton, Chelsea, Bolton, Fulham, ManC, Stoke, Wigan and QPR have signed no one.. everyone else one or maybe two at most and only a couple of teams like liverpool and ManU have made any significant sized transfers.

Yeah, it seems that certain fans have missed Veevs's point and are slamming Blackburn, Venkys and Kean for not doing anything in the transfer window despite most teams not having done anything yet. They use "Kean can't attract top players" as an excuse as to why we haven't signed anyone despite most clubs including Arsenal not having signed anyone yet!

Manchester United are top of the food chain. That makes life a lot easier for them. We are certainly not.

You are demanding that we sign good players, that we do it all but instantly and that we get a fair price, at the same time as clubs that finished above us are trying to sign those same players. Whereas, its basically a case of two at most from that list. We could sign good players quickly if we overpaid. Or rubbish players cheaply and quickly. Or good players where we've had to chase numerous targets, negotiate, wait for other deals to go through, but eventually get a good price and a good player.

I know which one I'd prefer.

May not be the right thread but surely looking at ashley youngs fee to united we must be happy with the Phil jones fee. Young is a winger, and we all know attacking players go for a premium, and he's also a regular in the England squad. Yet he went for less than jones. Probably as he didn't have a clause in his contract and made it clear he wanted to leave so villa had to accept less than they would have wanted.

Yea so half the teams have already made moves in the transfer market. The point is that given our struggles last season, given our reportedly hefty new budget and given Kean was installed as manager to start planning for next season ahead of time, I would've expected us to at the very least have some concrete targets that we were actively working on by now, but by the sound of it we don't and if we did, they don't fancy coming here anyway.

it was due to him only having one year left on his contract.

We got a good price for Jones, most of us just didn't want him to go. The 16-20 mil we'll get for him is a great sum though and hopefully we can re-invest and improve the team.

How do you know? when the owners say who they want to sign, people on hre slate them. then when we hear nothing people still slate them. We are not a big club. If a big club wants a player, they shout it from the rooftops and the player usually comes running even if the selling club plays hardball for a while. If we want a player and we shout it from the rooftops 4 or 5 other clubs in better locations, with a bigger weekly attendance, with a better media profile, come running and the player chooses which one he fancies at the time. Much better to go quietly about your business. We couldn't plan in detail for this season until we knew we weren't going to be in the Championship. Clubs like Newcastle and Sunderland, by getting safety assured a few weeks earlier and with cash they knew could be spent, had that bit more time to sound out clubs and targets

Proving the old adage - a fool and his money are soon parted.

Moving on, I hear also that Ashley Young is in Manchester tonight with a view to signing for United for a reported £16m. United will have spent £33m so far and presumably will be spending again as Nasri and Modric are also in their sights. This is what proper football clubs do - identify their targets early and go out and get their man.

Which reminds me - where's the money ?

You don't half talk crap sometimes, United can sign players because they are Champions, 70,000 crowds,CL and can offer further trophies and silly money. Perhaps you could use your cliche on them, they have signed their fair share of turkeys. But at least they did it quickly. ;)

Think people need to remember where we finished last season. Money or no money we are not in Europe and will probably miss out on our first targets due to the current stature of the club,, this does not worry me though it's to be expected, transfers have always been a chain, the top clubs buy then the next tier and so on. If we land a top target in June we will have done very well, if we go on to finish 6th we will be higher up that chain this time next year. It will all take time and we need to have patience.

From Wiki; Coaching career:

After retiring as a player, Lowe worked for the Professional Footballers' Association until 2002, when he joined Wigan Athletic under former team-mate Paul Jewell.[2] A fully qualified coach, Lowe fulfilled various roles at Wigan before following Jewell to Derby County and becoming Head of the Youth Academy at the club. Following the departure of Jewell and prior to the arrival of new manager Nigel Clough, Lowe was placed in temporary charge of solitary game in January 2009, where his Derby team beat Manchester United 1–0 in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final at Pride Park Stadium.[3] He left the club on 21 April 2009. He then did part-time work for Manchester United, in charge of the eldest participants in Manchester United Soccer Schools, before joining the backroom staff at Tranmere Rovers.[4]
