They weren't meant to be going straight into the first team anyway, were they? Thought the plan for Formica was next season to begin with..?

From what I hear, we might be struggling to see much contribution from either in them in the first team next season. Let's hope the doomsayers are wrong and both kick on in pre-season.

Remains an odd thing to have done- we were slipping into a relegation struggle and all the transfer fees spent went on kids for the following season.

rebelmswar, agreed and pick32's post is a classic example of the level of delusion on here.

£16.5m basic less fees does not equal £20m. Take at least 20% off the £16.5m and the transfer kitty has grown by about £13m. The add-ons may or may not be forthcoming but for sure they will not turn into cash we can spend before 31 August.

Agreed. What we need is a decent pair of strikers (2x10+ goals) at least. That is much more important than keeping Jones and Samba. We have to look at the team as a whole, and as it stands, it is VERY imbalanced.

Did you hear that folks?

Get your money on a Rochina goal against Wolves, assisted by Formica

Easy way to put it would the team benefit more from having 30million to spend and samba, nelsen pairing or 10million and samba and jones at the back. I would say take the money and we will be a better team for it.

Samba and Jones would have been the first choice centre backs from the first game this season. Nelly would surely be on his way next summer, meaning we would only have to buy a back up centre half.

A centre back of Jones quality is gonna be costing £10 Million +, meaning we only have to spend that next summer as opposed to this, either way we have to replace him so the extra cash boost makes little difference to me.

Why is this? Rochina was on the fringes anyhow and looked decent for the ressies? Formica however, is a total unknown is terms of quality.

We were 7th, our highest league position all season when Ruben Rochina signed for us. We were no where near a relegation battle.

Were we?

And what about the two expensive, experienced loans we bought in?

Paint the whole picture Phillip.

were,s nicko then today he usally as a comment or two on here must be busy trying to find out who venkys are trying to buy for 2millon or free tranfers :angry2:

The man has a job and is probably out trying to find out what is going on at several clubs. He shares info with us sometimes on here, most of which contains a large amount that subsequently turns out to be true. However, he is not at our beck and call. When he has something to offer he will no doubt be back. And some of the cheapest deals we've done have also been the best (Friedel, Samba, Nelsen, Bentley etc) so where's the problem with frees and nearly frees. If they are decent and it leaves more cash for harder to fill positions such as striker, I'm all for them.

Huh? As I recall, during January or Feburary, we were seventh after having beaten West Brom twice and Liverpool 3-1, dreaming of challenging for Europe and even Chris Samba and Phil Jones signed a new contract then. Of course when things looked rosy back then, Kean thought he could buy a couple of kids for the future.

None of us at that time expected Blackburn to go on a slide all the way down. But even after the winless run, we never once slipped into the relegation zone. Not trying to downplay our problems back then, but you do have to admit at that period of time it was a good choice. Plus we had Jermanine Jones and Roque Santa Cruz, the former of whom shone and the latter who none of us thought would flop at that time.

Be a little more fair to Kean, yeah? :D

It is still extremely odd that all the January transfer fees were spent on two players who between them spent less than 45 minutes in total on the pitch of a nail bighting relegation battle.

Being fair to Kean?

He is rubbish

Cannot say fairer than that.

The post above highlights why you are again talking rubbish. We weren't in a relegation battle when we signed them.

For left back, has anyone seen Eric Lichaj playing the Gold Cup this week? He's been absolute class (not just saying that because he's a countryman) - his 1v1 defending is of a very high level, and going forward he is as dangerous as Olsson with runs and taking guys 1 on 1 - currently sits the bench for Villa so we could get him on the cheap. Anyone else seen him play?

Well the relegation battle thread was already going strong on this MB so it was pretty obvious to quite a few Rovers fans that all was far from well.

Rubbish is your speciality Bucky.

Rochina played 80mins against everton. :P

Its not odd, sign 2 players ready to play their part for the remainder of the season and try and fix a price for the summer (which kean has stated previously) and buy 2 young decent prospects who can adjust to life of the premier league and then play a part the following season

I think you are referring to the psychic posters. Steve Kean doesn't have that ability unfortunately. You "knew" with hindsight. You also "knew" that we would be relegated.

The Relegation battle thread was around when Sam was in charge. I was talking about actual facts, like our league position at the time.

Matter of opinion. At least 2 senior players don't agree with you - one I know of and one someone else mantioned having spoken to. I don't particularly like what I know of him, but I'm not a professional footballer being asked to play for him, and nor are you.

If Samba wants out (which should be fairly evident), you can't really go wrong with Bassong plus cash.

If this Miranda (I hadn't heard of him) deal came off, then that cash could be put to use in other positions.

The majority of Hoilett's good work has come from the left (Liverpool assist, Wolves & WBA goals) and I'd love us to get Bentley back in on the right.
