Well, people here talking about that its way too much to pay for an unproven player, so I wonder if they know about a player that IS proven in PL and dont have/want high wages.

I didnt say that Cisse is the answer...

Edit: I think Cisse can be a good signing :)

Don't know of any, but it's better to sign someone proven than unproven if we're paying a large fee and big wages regardless. Beggars can't be choosers though, I don't know of too many proven PL strikers that would join us. I would probably try and lodge a bid for Sturridge and Bellamy, especially Sturridge has huge re-sale potential and will become a top PL striker.

However, when I first saw Cissé linked it got me excited to think of him banging in goals in a Rovers shirt. 22 goals for a team that ended 9th in the table is good, no African (according to wiki) has scored more in a season in the Bundesliga ever before - Yeboah scored 20 in the 90's and we all know how well he did. The fact that Freiburg only scored a total of 41 goals makes it even more impressive.

Sign him up.

Does anyone know which kind of money Liverpool would want for Aquilani, and how high his wages would be?

Would be a quality signing in my opinion. Never really got the chance in Liverpool, but when he did, I think he did good.

I think he has been outstanding for Juventus this season, although some might disagree.

Aquilani is on £70,000 a week.Should return to Italy with someone.

Comedy acticle,if you offered £11 million for Vucinic,Roma would fall about the place laughing.

12.3m Euros? Might be a good starting point actually. Especially given they're close to completing Bojan's transfer for 10m Euros.

Roma were bought quite recently too. They're not exactly short of cash. ;)

Couldn't agree more Hughsey, get the overpaid deadwood out and it will easilly cover one or two high profile wages. Simply make up the numbers by promoting from the academy/reserves.

Brown (Gone), Grella, El Hadji, Andrews, Goulon to start with.

We also have the hole of RSC, Mame & JJ's which we must be able to afford.

Also we need to keep in mind that in 12 months players like Nelsen, Salgado, Dunn, Emerton, Roberts will all be coming towards the end of contracts/ careers

Did Nelsen not extend his contract?

Still worried by the lack of incoming signings though.

Look at Newcastle (normally a laughing stock), they have a low profile manager but have already done most of their business. They've got two good french midfielders one for £5 mil and one on a free, signed Demba Ba (reportedly £40k a week plus appearance money) and are making Ben Arfa a permanent signing. Based on last years performances they already had a stronger midfield than ours. All four players would walk into our first team.

The only good thing so far is at least Venkys are not shouting from the rooftops about who we are going to sign, which may, possibly, just possibly, mean there is a plan...

You want decent players then you pay decent salaries. You have to expect to pay in the region of 75k a week for a top striker. I dont know much about Cisse but, given that we're strengthening across the park, if he can score then he'll be worth it.

Problem is you cannot afford to pay those sort of wages on your current turnover without financial assistance.

Lets hope for your sake your owners don't get bored in 2-3 years time.

who knows what next season will bring, looks like we're looking at some good players, personally I think that any striker we bring in worth their salt will be on around 75k, seems to be about the going rate nowadays, i suppose it is upsetting if they turn out to be rubbish and don't score any goals but I don't think that will happen because i'm an eternal optimist.

TBH

I thought the original plan was to buy young talent with a view to developing them and selling if they do really well. If we have £30 million then surely we'd be better sticking to this policy. Young players tend to be hungrier, on less money and less of a risk as you could sign 6 or 7 in the £4-£5 million bracket.

If only 2 go on to realise their potential you have players worth 4 to 5 times what we paid.

You could then add experienced players on Bosmans or loans.

I think thats the 'long term' plan - hence players like Rochina, Formica, the young spanish defender and now Baez. However you cant afford to wait for these kids just now as we were already starting to look a tired outfit, we need to improve year on year, and then in a couple of seasons we might start to see the low cost young uns start to appear on the pitch.

Me too, and I still reckon that's what we'll end up with. Given we've come into some money with the Jones sale (and possibly others) I can see us bringing a couple of established players in, but if we really had the big money to spend then I would have expected us to be looking at some Premier League players that are available.

A club like rovers will have to pay 75k to bring in top players because with the best will in the world we can't tell them we will be in europe every season or winning trophies so money is all thats left.

This should change once a few better players are wearing the famous old shirt. :)

Not sure I totally agree with that.. 75k seems pretty darn steep especially considering the average first team salaries in the EPL.. data here..

Just not sure he is worth that with the transfer fee on top.. it's more on par with a free transfer player who has run down his contract for a pay off.

Guess he is what we need though (then again it could be argued what is the point of a striker without a decent supply) and we may have to pay a premium as not only are other clubs interested but we are not exaclty battling for a european cup.

This approach is nearly as bad as wenger's penny pinching on transfers the facts remain to get a striker who scores regularly 15-20 goals a season you have to pay top dollar for them. Also if we were prepared to pay Jones 80K a week to stay at rovers this guy's wages should not be a problem. Also people talk about him possibly not scoring as goals has anyone seen his stats he has a better scoring record than Cacau,Podolski,Robben, dzeko & Huntellaar for a striker to outscore all those big names he must have something about him he even scored more goals than the 2 other strikers we were linked with in the past Pogrebnyak & Lewandowski. Also he has come 2nd in the top scorer in the german scoring charts just behind Gomez with 22 goals to acquire such prolific strikers will cost a lot in wages it's just nature of the beast but as his scoring record is very good I think it would be worth it & if we were offering P.Jones 80K this should not be a problem I just hope we can get him also if need be lets get Grella,EHD,Goulon etc we should be able to get this man on the wage bill. Come SK,Venkys sort this out. Nicko can you confirm can you only formally announce incoming transfers on July 1st? Thanks

Liverpool are not in CL, they paid 35mil for Carroll with wages of about 70k I think? I would not call him exactly proven nor amazing, I would prefer Cisse over him from what I seen. It does send out a message that they are not laming about and actually do have real ambitions to get into the CL again. I would expect us to be doing the same from what I have heard from Kean and Venky's.

In my opinion, it looks a better deal than Carroll and it is no more or less risky than what Carroll is, so? Why not, there is risk involved in everything anyway.

Although I do agree, they shouldn't really be shocked by what he wants and if other teams in the German league are willing to pay it, then it should be pretty obvious we will have to offer him the same or more to get him here.
