I think we're fine with Givet, Dann, Hanley and Nelsen. If the latter isn't fit then we may need cover.

Were you at Everton on Saturday when they could have scored 2 or 3 in the last 5 minutes with free headers because none of our centre-halves are big enough or good enough or better than Samba ? You cannot disguuse the fact losing losing Samba would be a huge blow

I didn't say anywhere in my post that those four were better. I still think it's a solid group of defenders by PL standards though. Samba is hugely imposing figure, perhaps more so than any other defender in the league. We won't find anyone to replace him like-for-like.

However let's put some legs on this discussion...

We've conceded one goal in each of the last two games. That's a significant improvement on the two/three we were conceding each game with Samba in the team...

Why not? They're just sctrewing up the conversion from the other way around.

I don't hold most journalists in very high regard, but I do think they're able to convert currencies. After all, all you need to do is type "inr to gbp" into Google and you get an number straight away. Takes a couple of seconds. Anyway, deleted the post as I noticed that the Financial Times of India (Which is what I was referring to) used Nick Harris as their source for the £100m profit, so it adds nothing new; they're either both wrong or both right. I had assumed they'd be in a position to dig up numbers themselves.

So while the numbers could be off, I don't think the issue is the conversion. As for me I really don't know what to believe about how rich they are. I also don't really care; they're clearly not willing to invest any money, and if that's the case it doesn't matter if they have £100m, £1bn or £10bn as we're seeing none of it. I just don't buy the argument that some use that no money invested means they have no money.

You'd think so but our very own LT screwed up when they first reported Venky's takeover. They put the decimal point in the wrong place and reported the Chicken farmers were worth 10 times more than they actually were.

I wrote to the paper at the time and got an admission they'd messed up the conversion but I don't know if they ever put a correction in the paper. I've still got the e-mail from the editor I think.

Not quite, the Indians usually report there figures in crores or lakhs and not INR directly. You need to know how many rupess are in a lakh, then how many lakhs are in a crore to do the conversion and this is where most people screw up (inc the LT).

Who (being an English based journalist and making the last few posts reposnding to mine irrelevant) probably screwed up with the calculator as well.

Venky's India LTD, the main business make £10m a year (or rather, they did last year).

Do you expect a serious answer on that or are you ######?

If you want to give a serious answer, then do. But please no more unfounded statements, with words asterixed out.

In my opinion neither player is critical to their respective clubs. Samba may solve Arsenals problems. Arshavin may solve ours. A swap deal means that the money does not go direct to Venky's bank account. Everyones a winner.

Samba is worth more and is probably on less money per week, like everybody is saying we dont really have problem scoring, but we do have a problem conceding. so the answer to your question is a big fat no.

ps. he would not come anyway.

I think that maybe our problem with conceding goals, is more to do with our system of defending, and not the personnel, implementing that system. One example is that no-one takes command of our defensive line at freekicks, everyone is milling about, setting up all over the place. As for, he would not come, I don't know him so I could not comment.

Arshavin wants to stay in England for 1 more year after his Arsenal contract expires to get citizenship apparently, and would entertain the idea of a move to another premier league club.

Not that I'd want him here, mind. The bloke's a lazy, weird looking fraud and is currently on wages of £80k a week basic. I don't see Venky's forking that out even if Samba was to leave.

Absolute crap people saying we've conceeded 2 in 2 without samba and 4 in 2 with him or whatever. The 2 games samba hasnt played in 1. Fulham at home, fulham had scored just 6 away goals in the league all season before playing us 2. Everton are one of the lowest scoring teams in the league, none of their strikers who have started a game have scored at all this season. Whereas with samba 1. Man utd away conceding 2 goals, no crime there really let's be honest and 2. Stoke at home, crouch with a couple always scores against us and is a very good player and apart from their goals (one of which was a very unfortunate slip from samba) didn't trouble us again and they are a very decent outfit

Steve Kean talks absolute c**p.

He said on Friday that Samba would play on saturday if his head was right? Well why was he training with the reserves and not the first team who prepare for matches the day before the game and go through all the routines.

And why is he still training with the reserves?

It's blatently obvious that Samba has said i won't play for you again and Kean has had to make a stance to the rest of the squad but then tells a whole different story to the press. :(

When you say i won't play for you again do you mean kean or the club because lets face it despite wanting kean out it's samba who completly out of line here. Happy to sign the contract take the extra money yet still crying off at every transfer window could easily have said no to extra money and left himself in a better position to get a move ala junior.

EXACTLY!

We are not conceeding goals because our defenders are bad, personally im very happy with Robinson, Olsson, Samba, Givet, Hanley, Dann, Henley as most PL teams would be. We are missing a right back but I think Lowe is doing ok.

The main problem is tactics. We have conceeded quite a few long range screamers this season which means our defence and midfield are not closing down quick enough and the goals we conceede in the area is usually because we are not organised enough at the back. Also after taking leads we have put 11 men in our box asking for the losing team to attack us at will for the remainder of the game (see Sunderland as main example but there has been others) even the best defences cant cope with 45 - 60 mins of constant pressure, again that is poor tactics and something we have improved on against Man United and Fulham.

To sum up look how poor Danny Simpson is yet he is a constant in a rock solid Newcastle defence (up til the Fulham game), I doubt any of the Greece defenders were world class but look how solid they were when they won the Euros.

Basically Kean and his coaching staff have to get the team more organised which I think they are doing slowly but surely.

I was the one who said instead of aiming for the Holy Grail of clean sheets lets jut aim to conceed one goal a game and it makes a big difference. 2 positive results in our last 2 games. Then after a while of only conceeding one we might be able to get that down to zero eventually. :D
