Well he has a decent record as a manager :)

1 game played, 1 game won, against some team called Manchester United.

I remember his playing days at Wigan and Leicester can't say I know too much about his coaching pedigree but it's always good to see investment into the youth team.

Hope he can do well and help a few more gems progress.

Handing out jobs for the boys, especially when we've been told the academy is paramount, tells me all I need to know.

Sacked because Derby wanted to nurture local players and develop 1st teamers, why?

In fairness Maj, I think both were sacked by Derby because they wanted to clear out anybody connected with Paul Jewell. Lowe has an excellent reputation for developing young players and hopefully this will be a good appointment for the club. Watching his interview on Roversworld it seems as though he is also going to be responsible for the in-service professional development of all the coaches at the Academy. Personally, I think this is a positive move by the club but, of course, as with all things connected with youth football only time will tell if it's a success or not.

Pray tell which excellent young players he has played a significant role in developing to warrant such a reputation?

Time may tell as you say, but yet again I see another novice as he hasn't produced any players of note, period. Wigan well known in the area youth wise as Dave Whelan says it's a waste of money and they are a CofE despite all the money they have garnered, who was the last player to come through there? Derby had one Kevin Thelwell, who enjoyed a good reputation for bringing through kids and was director of coach education for Wales. He even won the youth alliance cup with PNE. Cannon et al come in on the 8th of april 2008 and are sacked on the 20th the following year, 4 months after Clough joined and despite some serious praise from Clough along the way. Derby's academy reasoning for there dismal IE we want to recruit and bring through young players contradicts the reasoning given for hiring him:

A highly rated talent scout and youth development officer is vital for Derby County to bring through talented youngsters, saving money by not having to pay out huge transfer fees, or raising the skill level of young players who may then be sold on. full link

Lowe hired

One year later they are all sacked and given what they said when they were hired? Derby have an academy to rival any premier league team, costing circa 5 million to build and supplying almost a full third of their first team, surely if these two are as good as people say then they should have lasted longer than 10 months, especially given we all know youth takes time to develop.

Pray tell who was Rovers first choice for the academy?

Bowyer was the one who made the biggest difference and we've moved him upstairs for no real reason other than saving money.

Maj, I fully accept that Gary did an excellent job at the Academy, although I also think the players made rapid progress once they got to Iain Brunskill and the Reserves. Indeed, I was sorry to see Brunskill promoted to the First team as I still believe he has more to offer developing young players to bridge the gap between the reserves and first team.

I would also accept that our Academy has slipped behind in recent years in terms of facilities. It will be interesting to see which grouping the Rovers are given when the new structure is introduced. I am led to believe that the leading group / groups will need facilities that the Rovers don't have.

I think a more worrying development is the introduction of a European Champions League style competition at Academy level. I believe this starts in September with 16 clubs and Manchester City have already pulled their Reserve team from the Reserve League to concentrate on developing players in this competition.

It will be interesting to see what the long term impact of the Elite Development plan and the European Competition have on the Academy and Reserve set up at the Rovers. In many ways I suspect that the owners are going to have to invest large amounts of money into this area of the club if they want to maintain, let alone build upon, its present standing.
