bigbrandjohn Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Hear Wigan may be interested... and we are getting a Paraguayan in return who will take time to settle in and need an extension on his house.

bats Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 According to Sky Sports and Andy Cryer, Keith Andrews has handed in a transfer request
davulsukur Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Seriously? As if he needed to! I was under the impression we were happy to give him away for free!
LeChuck Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Actually this might not be as stupid as it appears to be... Players who transfer to another club without requesting the transfer are usually due a 'loyalty bonus'. Perhaps Keith had been playing hard ball to get this money (an article on the Wigan move said a severance package was being sorted out). By handing in a transfer request, Rovers would no longer be obliged to pay this money to him. I suspect his hand has been forced here in desperation to get a move. To me this signals that something will happen tomorrow.
bats Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Kamy has said this on twitter: Andrews transfer request voids his loyalty bonus, Wigan the most likely destination.
Ricky Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 If it means we don't have to pay him off it's a good thing. With 18 months left on his contract we should really be getting a fee, he dropped down a league and did ok. Surely Wigan would pay for him
jimw1988 Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I bet you Keith will come back to haunt us! I wonder what odds you would get on him sending us down in the 2nd last fixture of the season! Hopefully he goes to the championship again and not bloody Wigan!
BuckyRover Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Why? The commonly held view is that he is a liability to any team and therefore him going to Wigan will actually boost our chances of staying up.
Hughesy Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Fair play to Jonnolad for handing it in, hopefully he goes and allows us to bring the defensive midfielder in now
1864roverite Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Good bloody riddance, a waste of a shirt and a waste of time. Thank you Paul Ince, this player epitomises everything you did for our club. Dont bother slmming the door shut on the way out the wind will close it for you.
stu07 Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Glad he's handed in the request, just need Salgado to do the same thing now. He's not playing so even letting him go on loan and the team paying his wages would be good for us. Hopefully we can sign Sutter and Victor Caceres and another striker but it's going to be tough now to get a striker in this late in the window.

His career is over. Best he can go for now is the India auction or somewhere like Qatar soaking up the sun. He's more likely to sit out his contract - and I don't blame him. What a way to treat a modern day football legend. Total lack of class. Unless we sell Hoilett or Samba, I don't envisage any signings.

Am I the only one who thinks it is absolutely fine that we aren't extending Salgado's contract? We'd be stupid to be lumbered with his huge wages for another year when he can't cut it, especially if we drop to the Championship. If Salgado is so desperate to play and help us, he should offer to void the appearance-based extension clause in his contract.

No, I think it's right that we shouldn't be offering him a new contract but the contempt that he has been shown in the process is very poor IMO. After the way he's been treated, I expect he won't want to help Venkys and Kean. All I was saying is why should he hand in a transfer request. It's not like he's going to have another team to play for. Just like Samba, people look at a player who has been wronged by Kean and Venkys and blame him for his reaction. Or say he should treat us with respect when there has been none shown to him. In my opinion.

Or say he should treat us with respect when there has been none shown to him. In my opinion. I'm sorry but I'm honestly not seeing where this is contempt here. You agree we shouldn't keep him on for another year (I'm not talking about a new contract, but the one year extension triggered if he plays a few more games). If we play him, we have to keep him on. We haven't played him. Sorry if my logic is missing some key ingredient here, but I can't fathom why you think this is a lack of respect. As for Samba, respect has been shown to him to the tune of two contracts handed out in about six months, with a lucrative wage (presumably two lucrative signing on fees), and a loan from the owners for an extension to his house despite the massive amounts they already pay him. If he believed those 'promises' from Venkys, he is a bloody fool.
BuckyRover Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I don't think we have treated him badly but if we aren't going to play him again then maybe we should pay up his contract so he can try and get a new club (if he wants)

I'm personally against ever paying a player for nothing in that manner. We've already got Grella for that... Edit- sorry, it's quite obvious how that would be better for him, a big payoff...but what I meant is how would it help him find a club compared to him already being free?
Stuart Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Bruce, google "Salgado frozen out" He's still got 9 more games in him before any new contract kicks in. In December, we had our worst defensive crisis for many a year and yet he was left out of the squad, with Kean outwardly bemoaning the loss of his experience due to injury. He wasn't actually injured, yet Kean was happy for the world to believe he was. That could have put paid to another team's interest due to the perception he's not fit. A shabby way to treat him but, as I say, that's just my opinion. Maybe that's acceptable to you.

If we are allowing him to leave on a free then it's no different at all. I think I just got carried away and assumed he was being abused like everyone keeps saying.
Steve Moss Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 If we are allowing him to leave on a free then it's no different at all. I think I just got carried away and assumed he was being abused like everyone keeps saying. Salgado was abused: Salgado was fit. Per my understanding of the situation, Kean lied about it, publically and repeatedly, claimed he was not fit, that he was injured, as an excuse for not playing him and in explanation of our defensive woes. In reality, we didn't want to play him as contract clauses might have taken effect which would cost us money. As Salgado is an old pro, a reputation for fitness problems might cause him difficulties getting a new contract with another team. Ergo, Salgado has reason to feel justifiably aggrieved.
Bigdoggsteel Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Let the lad off, got an undeserved rough ride here. Would Grella have been booed? Just because he came from the lower leagues. A very good championship player.
oreilly Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Just want to say best of luck to Keith Andrews. He always applied himself for Rovers and put in some good (some not so good) shifts for Rovers. An honest player that wasn't respected by some of the fans from day 1, he never had a chance. would love to see him go on bigger and better things. Cheers Keith

Probably not premier league quality but would certainly do a job for us in the Championship. Received unwarranted and cringeworthy abuse from fans and like you said, never really given a chance because he came from the lower leagues.
A cup of beans Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Just want to say best of luck to Keith Andrews. An honest player that wasn't respected by some of the fans from day 1, he never had a chance. would love to see him go on bigger and better things. Cheers Keith youre not fooling anyone with a name like oreilly! problem is keith was appalling at rovers. never hit form like he has with eire or ipswich. totally out of his depth as a prem footballer. the only reason he ended up in the prem and at rovers was cos he was a mate of ince's. JW must also take some of the blame for agreeing to the clause that entitled keith to a wage hike and new contract!
davulsukur Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 To be fair to JW, he probably never thought Andrews would make as many appearances as he did. He probably thought he would never have to honour that agreement. But it was still the right thing to do on our part, if he worked hard and got a regular game, he should have moved onto a premiership wage. Which he somehow did.
