From what I have heard and also a small snippet in this morning's LT it looks like Rovers are looking to sign Tony Warner. The 37 year old has previously worked with Kean (at Coventry) and David Lowe at Tranmere.

Makes no sense to me signing a 37 year old.

That's what I am thinking as well mum, makes no sense to bring him in as a player but possibly makes sense in some sort of player/coaching capacity. Although that also worries me because there was speculation at the back end of last season that Bobby Mimms was set to join Liverpool.

We need a third choice keeper. And with Warner onboard, we can have both Keen and Bunn getting some match experience on loan while Warner is warming the bench.

don’t be silly Budha… Bunn will be number 2 to Robbo… its highly unlikely that Kean will get a game in the 1st team, at the very least, he will be on the bench if Robbo gets injured. There is no need for Warner, unless as people have said, in a coaching role somewhere.

either way, this is ridiculous and I will put my imaginery season ticket on hold, and sit with Abbey on the fence.

Make sure it isn't a fence with barbed wire on the top. <_<

As mum has said, the only way this move makes sense is if Warner is coming to coach the Academy goalkeepers. I assume that his connection with Lowe makes this likely. I don't think we have a specialist coach for the 'keepers at the Academy, I assume they work with Bobby Mimms. The other worry would be if this meant that Mimms was likely to move elsewhere and Warner was coming in as senior goalkeeping coach.

Found this on the official Tranmere site:

Warner set for new club

The interesting bit:

"We always knew he could attract deals from bigger and higher clubs than us so it was always a little bit pie in the sky that he might be staying with us, but we made him an offer in the hope that he would do."

=====

I have to say I would find this move (if true) baffling. Surely if we need another keeper (we have Jake Kean as well- getting star reviews on loan) then we can do better than a nomadic Warner.

Well I think we need three senior keepers. And if an opportunity presents itself, Bunn could be loaned for a month to Championship. And this is where we need someone to sit on the bench. Warner's one of the most experienced bench warmers in the game, and as Enckelman is now getting games in Scotland, the best option :) Using Kean as third choice could hamper his development if we can't get him competitive games. And atleast I think it's better to sign Warner for the whole reason rather than scramble for any emergency keeper if Robbo gets injured.

I think I know what's happened here. It's just a small misunderstanding - Kean has flown to India and told Venky's "I want Luca Toni" but they have heard "I want to look at a Tony".

He's just lucky he didn't say "I want Khizanishvili" or he'd have got a good hiding from one of the Rao brothers.

It does look like he's looking to get into coaching. At least it says here that Tranmere planned on offering him a coaching role to get him to stay: My link

"Meanwhile, Rovers are likely to offer veteran goalkeeper Tony Warner a coaching role in an attempt to keep him at Prenton Park"

Maybe this is all that have been heard and been interpreted that it was Blackburn Rovers. Hooray!

Two points:

1. This thread is proving that certain individuals on this messageboard can be positive about anything. If anyone here truly believes that letting go of Fielding and replacing him with a 37 year old is a good idea then you are mad.

2. If we announce this as our first transfer and then Venkys' PR announces one of their 'names' then once again we spend the next month being laughed at.

Rovers have two less keepers than last year. We need another keeper in my opinion. Whether Warner is the answer or not I don't know. But the keeper has to be experienced and also will expect to be competing for the third choice keeper position with Kean.

I remember when Tony Caig signed for Newcastle. They already had Given and Harper. Caig was effectively a lower league player. But a good professional and insurance against an injury crisis. He has gone on to be a decent coach. He didn't play a first team game for Newcastle but turned out for their reserves for nearly three years.

It will be difficult to find a keeper with the right temperament to be a third choice keeper and have experience enough to come into the side in an emergency and be of value alongside Robinson and Bunn on the training pitch.

I think you'll find that Jake Kean is Fielding's replacement and many judge him to be a better prospect than Fielding. I have been hugely impressed with Kean and see him as a potential first team 'keeper at Ewood. However, unless, Warner is being brought in as an Academy coach it is hard to see where he fits into the scheme of things. I would fully agree with you BPF that this type of signing sends out a completely different message to that which we have been hearing over the past week or so.

The problem BPF is that a couple of years ago Brown was our number two keeper with no serious opposition.

Last year we had Bunn, Brown and Fielding. Bunn has made the second spot his own so the other two have moved on. This was going to happen sooner rather than later. Some say that we should have kept Fielding and moved Bunn on. I have only seen them play in matches and not day to day training. However both Allardyce and Kean have selected Bunn over the other two.

They move on and we need someone else.

:glare: We are signing a vetren keeper, on a free, with no doubt nominal wages, as a 3rd choice keeper as we will be sending Kean out on loan again no doubt. But oh no, the world is ending, venkys have lied, the end is nigh... please

By the way BPF, Fielding was gash and wanted to go and find 1st team football, thats why he went. I know plenty of Direby fans who arnt chuffed as they thought he was average at best on loan.

Ive seen that Derby are after Burton keeper Adam Legzdins today. So I don't know where Fielding will fit in there.
