Summer 2011 Transfer Window - Part 3.

all remember the formica transfer, everyone thought we had lost out when he was close to signing for Monaco, and then in a last minute attempt we got are man as venkys gave the go ahead for the transfer it could still happen, maybe that's there way of doing things so they know what price they have to pay

No doubt will be interesting. IF the rumours are true that this is one of the clubs big targets - if we can't sign for the fee and wages being quoted - I do worry about the rest of the transfer window. However - has Kean or Venky's said he is definitely a target - or is it just papers putting two and two together. It could be that he was actually on the b-list - and they have another player they prefer ?

don't think the position piatti plays in was a priority as we have a few players who can play his position , but the defensive midfielder is important with jj not coming back

True...I think piatti might have happened later in the window had Valencia not bid for him but right now the main target is a striker then a defensive midfielder!

I see Defoe's name has started to appear in the press being linked with Sunderland......hope Rovers are all over that! He will score goals!

the two main positions we need filling is defensive midfielder and a top striker who can get 15 goals a season , if they were the only 2 signings we make I would still be happy, still think we also need that player who can open up a defensive with one pass, where is tugay when you need him, we have never replaced him, witsel is the kind of player we should be snapping up at that price, considering last season ac milan where willing to spend 20 million on him but got rejected 7 million is a steal and at 22 we could get 4 years out of him and sell him and make a profit, this is where we will see the true venkys now go get your man before it to late

The problem is that we probably have a lot less money than people think.

As of the beginning of last season, we were just about breaking even assuming a tenth to twelth place finish. In January, Venky's found more money to increase several contracts - Robinson and Samba being the key ones - paid around £4 million worth of fees and funded two very expensive loanees who will have cost at least another £3 million. The extra wages, let alone the fees, plus the lower finish, will have pushed us well beyond our break-even point.

So far, we've got Jones off the wage bill, as well as the likes of Brown, Zurab, Rigters, and possibly Benjani, but that's set against the money we lost last year and the increase in wages of contract extensions and new players.

If Venky's have put another £5 million in, then a large part of our £21 million pot will have to go on paying wages. If we signed Witzel for £7.5 million and paid him say £1 million a year for four years, that's £11.5 million gone - not including agent fees. Then we sign that defender fellow for £2 million, pay him say half a million a year for four years and that's another £4 million gone. Leaving us under £6 million to try and find a striker and pay his wages. Again, not counting apparently exorbitant agent fees.

I realise its not as simple as I make out. The cost of wages are spread over several years. But the point is that our wage bill was only just sustainable before Venky's took over. In fact, often it wasn't even then. Remember selling Warnock to cover wages? Are Venky's going to cover the bill for a wage deficit and invest money for fees every window? Even when it means we'll be ineligible for Europe in a year or two's time?

So it may be that we simply can't afford Witzel.

Yep. Saying the first run of games count for nowt is bananas. mark Lawrenson-esque levels of inanity! No offence meant, mate, but every game is a potential 3 points and every batch of points we pick up is GOLD.

I agree a good start is a must 6 points from the 1st 4 games will do nicely, just wish there was not such negativity from so called supporters, give them a chance and they will deliver. I can foresee 4 signings and a great team spirit, you only have to read how they talk to each other on Twitter to see they have a bond. The players I mean.

that's one of venkys problems, the first thing they did was chuck new contracts around to anyone, that cant have been cheap for them in the long run, the main contract that needs signed is holliets that's gone very quiet this week

i actually picked up on something with samba on twitter, all he did was moan about being in Austria and how much he hated it there, but the Everton team are also in Austria and there loving it there , posting pictures of them selves playing table tennis, the only player from rovers who seams to be enjoying it is Jason Roberts, there also flying back today

If we can't afford a player for 7.5 million EURO not pounds and on one 1 million Euro per year we may aswel give up because the players we will be signing will not improve the team,to progress in this league you have to be willing to spend some money not just talk about spending money.7.5 million euro for Witsel is a bargain.

Sorry Lee, I don't think Samba's on twitter, but there are one or two pretending to be.

You've changed your tune....you were lambasting Nicko for reporting this yesterday and you said Benfica were definitely not interested because they had 2 similar players already!

I also said that I would correct myself if I was wrong.

And, as far as the news tell us, it is not a done deal, Rovers could still do something.

Besides, if you ask any Benfica supporter, they will tell you the same thing: a player like Witsel is not a priorityu, specially considering Benfica lost their left back, arguably their best player.

I guess that's another sign of venky's not having a clue how things work. A player is only worth

What a club will pay! Personally I think we should keep him and play him more, I'm sure he will

Come good.

I agree with you. we should keep him and play him up front with Roberts and Hoilett and Olsson on the wings.

I think it is about time we face facts that Kean will sign RSC when the Copa America is over. we might aswell get used to it.;):D
