since you only joined the site less than a month ago I'm going to go ahead and assume you didn't see the amount of discussion that was had regarding Venky's when they first took over. It's certainly something that's divided opinion and made for heated discussion on these boards, so don't be surprised if you encounter a few individuals on here who don't share your apparent optimism and faith.

Ah...I see. I will take your word for it.

I do have encountered individuals who disagree with me, but I think they are justified in believing what they believe. Venkys certainly have not given cause for optimism yet. Though I think the bashing and insults have gone way overboard and they do deserve a chance as they have only been in charge for less than a year.

Some of the decisions they have made are indeed baffling, though, but it's also good to see them do stuff like keep the season ticket prices low, give out free food and everything else.

So I'm gonna reserve judgement on them, though I do think it's unfair to bash them as I have said.

... okay..

Not exactly what I meant, but fair play. However, I would rather see us purchase proven EPL players for the defensive roles of our squad than attacking. If they want to spend 10M+ on transfers and have wages of 80K for a player, then make it a defender or a defensive midfielder. Surely those areas are most important for us? Replacing the two Jones that have gone?

I agree but there has to be a balance, before you said why aren't we looking at players like Formica, Rochina etc

But I think you've just answered that in your last post, we have Olsson Hoilett Formica Rochina but now we need a little more experience whether that's EPL experience or other top leagues abroad! It's a lot easier said than done I know.

Maybe Nicko could explain why our transfer targets have changed from Rochina/Formica/etc to people like Keane/Fabiano/Bellamy.

Rochina and Formica were supposed to be stars of the future. That was the plan. However even now - after half-a-season at the club - you could not put money on them being in the starting line-up.

I think there is now a realism that some experienced players make a difference. Jones proved that fact.

So that would explain why the manager fancies Keane.

Fabiano is one of those Venkys Brazil jobs.

Bellamy has not really been mentioned apart from some mischief-making at Man City.

The bottom line is you need good ready-made players to be a top-half team and some good young ones to develop.

Twas ever thus.

You have money - so 'cut out the crap and stop the excuses' would be my message.

I don't think the budget is high enough for us sign experienced players for all the positions we need them in. If you include wages and fees into the budget (40M-50M) and these experienced players are wanting 75K a week.. I have no idea how long these contracts are.. but even a 2 year contract at 75K a week is close to 8Mil?

I have to say I to think we need established players, we have a number of young players already. Given the stature of our club currently we would only get players who have had a bad time, if they are hungry and have something to prove this would work well for us. It's why Keane would be a top signing. I am also in the thinking that cisse is way over priced after one good season in a inferior competition and I can understand them not wanting to pay it.

just one question to one and all

who are we looking to sign because I do not have a clue

Keane so far seems like the most realistic target. Even then, I still think his wages or the transfer fee will have to come down a bit.

Any experienced players we are going to bring in will likely be because the fee we are paying for the player is either nothing or very low. So they will be either nearing the end of their contract, had a bad injury lately or had a loss of form. Clearly we are not going to be getting anyone similar to Cisse, the money involved is just too high.

A week ago I was very positive about rovers signing very good player but we haven't ever put and bids in for anybody but for Keane.

Now I am not at the minute because we don't seem to be doing anything in terms of putting bids in for players.

There should only be one person deciding on the targets, and that is the manager.

Chaddy it appears as if someone wrote up a list of transfers that we could get, forgetting the fact we don't need 1 or 2 players to bolster the squad. We need more like 4 or 5. So Venkys have probably got all excited to, until they called up people like those involved with the Cisse deal, found out he wants 80K a week, that 6M isn't really his price, it is more like 13M.. etc, etc.

Not signing Demba Ba is looking like a poor decision to me.....if they are not happy spending £12m or whatever on someone like Cisse then he would have been perfect on a freebie.

Been a while since you looked at things from a rational point of view, cause you'd been supporting every single decision the owners/management have been behind. I said when Ba was available that I dont care about any prior injury record, he scores goals and has been mostly fit for the last 2 seasons. On a free, even with large wages I'd taken a chance on him. Easily twice as much better than any of our strikers. Then we couldve looked for a 2nd striker in a more relaxed way.

Already Rochina and Formica kind of "written" off? I thought Rochina was good when he came on last season and should be in or around the first team this season. But Ive been hearing these vibes. Is there something more to it?

Formica, well, having heard about his reserves stints, Im not holding my breath.

Well, the one thing I'm glad for at least is that we have all our summer signings done, and we can actually start integrating the new players into the squad and not have to wait 1-2 years for them to "settle in". Finally some common sense have been used at this club.

oh, wait................................................

To quote Steve Kean in a private conversation after the United game, he asked:

"Have you seen anything of the new boys (Rochina and Formica)?" Obviously the reply was no.

He said.. "Rochina looks like he could be world class and Formica... What a player, think Juninho who was at Boro".

Rochina looks very talented and think he will turn out to be a good signing.

Not sure of Formica as not been involved yet.

Kean said he would have played more of them, last season, if we were in a more comfortable position in the league.

To be fair, he was arrested for being massively over the drink-drive limit a couple of hours later...

"I've seen him a number of times and he reminds me of a young Batistuta" :D

The words I've been dreading hearing all summer are 'Rochina and Formica will be like 2 new signings'

Every time a club has a bad window stuff like that is said so let's hope it doesn't come to it

Haha, you're not wrong, shame we didn't have a player out injured all season so they can be like a third 'new signing'... wait a minute Vince, this is your year.

:D He was a little open about his opinions of certain players, perhaps that was the reason (drink). I think obviously having worked with Formica on a day to day basis his understanding of him as a player has changed hence the "Juninho" comment. Having seen Rochina's reserve team performances against teams like United, I'm very optimistic about him... Rather than... "I'm skeptical because he's hardly played for us" attitude of some of the bores on here. Last season was the wrong time and wrong place for flair players such as these two. I'm confident they'll be good for us.
