The Piatti news is a major let-down.

It is the classic example of waiting too long, being too smart, not speaking to the right people...and letting someone step in first.

Valencia were nowhere to be seen in that race two weeks ago.

Now the lad will go there - and even if Rovers came in with a proper bid it would fail.

So it's an A for considering him but a Z Minus for missing out.

Sorry Nicko.. not sure on that, sure we missed out and no one is doubting he is a steal at that price.. but we still have not got the three key positions we need filling and 6m is an awful lot of a 16m budget.

As you mentioned yourself a left winger would be a luxury, need to secure tha striker(or two), defensive mid and a center back first.

Still we should be bidding and getting our acts together, missing out on these kinds of chaps is mighty frustrating.

I just hope the whole drop in budget is not down to Venkys putting some aside for their Marquee signing... They might be thinking Marquee = shirt sales = big time sponsor, but they better hurry their acts up pretty darn quick a premier league side without a shirt sponsor is almost unbearably embarrasing.

Actually, I heard the reason Blackburn stopped going after Piatti was because they wanted Axel Witsel?

Same with Miranda, Johnson and Dann - they seem to be going for Onuha?

I could be wrong, though.

Did we even "start" going after Piatti?

Johnson and Dann, have we even been linked with them 2 never mind expressed an interest?

We are in one major dilema atm I would imagine.. three positions and 16m.. the likes of Witsel, Cisse and co would all be more than half of the budget in one shot, which means one of those positions has to be the priority or we utterly rehash our plans again.

Does anyone know why Sunderland didn't take the ManC lad after his loan?

Dear Venkys, I do not want to hear about the labour pains, just show me the baby already.

don't go rushing for an ugly baby, wait for a good one, we have had to many ugly babies that cost a lot and made us happy but didn't produce.

(disclaimer: this in no way advice to anyone thinking about stealing a baby from a hospital, I am simply referencing waiting for the right players, please if you are thinking about stealing a baby reconsider and get help)

Witsel is the one I really want but I don't for one minute think he'll end up here.

As for Piatti what's to say if we did bid then Valencia wouldn't have come in anyway?

They may have done but if we haven't bid then we'll never know. By that logic we shouldn't bid for anyone unless they were decided upon coming to Rovers.

Anyone worrying about the Marquee signing can rest assure their worries are unfounded.

Sorry if this link has been up before, in fact it was in the Mumbai Mirror link last Friday. Basically they are not running behind big names, which is why all the Cisse links and whatever went dead, maybe?

Like someone said (who was it again? I apologize for forgetting who said it) it could mean the selection is decided within 2 weeks, or it could mean we'll be seeing players signed in 2 weeks.

I doubt they are lying, but it's best to take the news with a pinch of salt and not as a guarantee that we are definitely getting someone within the next 2 weeks. Where's Lee, by the way? He mentioned something about us getting Onuha in the next 48 hours after Clichy joined Manchester City? Anyone want to take bets on that?

Piatti is not just a left winger,he's more of a second striker and a very good one at that, we will not sign a better player this window unless we attempt a move for Daniel Villalva but that is wishfull thinking.

Since when has Papise Cisse been a big name? I'd never heard of him until we were linked with the guy.

I guess it depends on how you define big names?

Players who cost big money and big wages are considered big names, regardless of whether you have heard of him? Cisse could be a big name in the German Bundesliga.

Again, I could be mistaken, but I guess we all have differing opinions on what big names are, perhaps?

Marquee signings and big name players are those players who are known worldwide.. Drogba, Falcau, Rooney, Ronaldhino, Beckham, Fabiano, Messi etc etc..

What standard of players are we looking at? Closer to the A or B list?

I would see C list. But that is just my opinion.

It could all be different by tomorrow...the whole thing is baffling.

How you miss the days of a boss picking a target and a chairman trying to do the deal.

Onuha , Hiztlsperger Reo-Coker & Bellamy - anyone else think we can get those done for £26m ?

Hopefully not ;). Onouha I'd take but I feel the other 3 are potentially panic buys. Unless we got Bellamy on a short term deal I wouldn't want him back. As has been said several times, we have 2 months to go. If we are still in this position at the end of July I feel these are the deals we should be going for. If they were wanted that badly by other clubs we would have seen movement. At present everyone is holding out for better players.

I'm guessing/hoping these C list names are likely leaks to distract from other targets. It makes sense to me that Venkys would want to keep their business private, as is seen too often on here we often get hyped up for no end product. I get the feeling they want to land some decent players under the radar. I dare say there is possibly a worry that if a big player were to be on the verge of signing here it could spark a bidding war that we may lose to a club with a larger reputation.

At a properly run football club with experienced people at the top i would say that would be bang on but.........

Yep, I bet this is why John Williams became "dis-interested" and why Sam's face didn't fit. How many managers would work this way?!?

Sod it, let's just hoover up a few of the free transfers lying around and be done with it. At least we'll have a squad that could last a season.

Matthew Upson, Nigel Reo-Coker, David Vaughan, John Carew.

Sorted. Not exciting but functional.

Potentially. We have to remember though that when Venkys took over we were crying out for them to remain true to the clubs traditions and values. Yes they made mistakes but I do wonder if some of the hold ups in regards to players have been in relation to overspending, agents fees, wages, etc. Things that were heavily regulated and well looked after by those that were in place before the takeover.

Now we have money everyone seems to be expecting silly season and although it's disappointed to be linked with players and see no action, I'm much more comfortable with it than I would be a mass spending spree on a squad that would need a lot of adjustment time. If we really want to push for the top 10 next year we can't overspend on foreign players that may not settle straight away. Of course we also need to buy quality rather than rush out targets but as I've said, we've a way to go yet in this window.

Yet more words of comfort!

Wouldn't really mind at this point if we didn't sign anyone.

BUT PLEASE CAN WE PUT OUR HOUSE IN ORDER.
