All signs point to Onuoha.

Sunderland were interested.

Miranda was the first choice. Any price at all would be 'more than we hoped' as we were hoping to get Miranda for free.

I would probably guess the same.

Doom to thou who mention thon average player whom hath already been becried as unworthy of donning the hallowed blue and white by the majority of the unwashed.

He might be alright though.

Quite a lot of people don't necessarily think he's unworthy of that, just either past it or too expensive for what he'd bring to the table.

Logic seems to dictate the player in question is Onuoha, Witsel, or Jones. Not sure people have considered that it could be Jones, since we were previously balking at Schalke's asking price. I see that the Witsel links - if true - suggest we were willing to spend £8 million plus there, but everything has been revised, so Nicko could be referring to more than the new budget was hoping to spend there. Though I'm expecting Onuoha or Witsel, as they both fit all the clues more solidly. I can't see it being a player Nicko hasn't mentioned, since he doesn't sound surprised about the player, just that we're signing someone for money.

Edit- sheesh, I've only just seen that Jones' tag was supposedly £10 million! Maybe not then! Though even any kind of compromise on that would certainly make it more expensive than intended...I'm looking forward to 11, when the site melts down and I can't read the answer.

Got to be Witzel.

He became a priority once JJ didn't materialise and is tied in with Kentaro which should make the deal easier and quicker to complete.

Will be happy if it is him.

My guess is it's the other way around, J. Jones is an easy deal to do. Our loan bid got rebuffed so we made a firm bid of £4m and he's ours.

Good signing :)

I can understand why you are puzzled.

To be fair, this is one that was set up and put on hold while the 'budget' was discussed.

There is/was another club interested.

And the player became a priority once the first choice did not materialise.

Many would presume witzel - but that was only a link and not one that was 'set up and put on hold'. Would that be correct.

Just hope it is not RSC. I think though it could well be pavelyocheco (spelling) from spurs.

it is who Newcastle wanted to replace Andy Carroll.

He is suppose to be a very good striker according to some Newcastle fans I've been talking to today.

ok I kn ow Newcastle had these players to replace Carroll, one of these:

Mounir El Hamdoui

Hulk

Andrew Johnson

Ewerthon

Jeremy Aladiere

Gervinho

Not so sure about that.

I think it was the LT that said Schalke are asking for close to £10 million for JJ and that would cool the interest.

I'd be happy with either to be honest but Witzel is considerably younger.

I've heard Cisse proved too expensive so Luca Toni is coming in, good move.

But seriously it wont be Axel Foley as Nicko would be more excited about that one, this one sounds unexciting but not too bad.

Would be happy with Witsel as first choice JJ has been ruled out or,

Onuha as first choice Miranda is still going to AM, or,

its Bellers/Keane as first choice Cisse proved too expensive.

C`mon Nicko, time to throw us some more scraps.................has anyone nailed it yet ?
