  1. 1. Are you happy with the new sponsors

    • Delighted!
    • I'd have prefered a commercial sponsor, but this is a great alternative
    • Simply don't care
    • Waste a valuable income
    • No objection to charity, do object to the Princes Trust

The way I look at it is that the Rovers' brand is tarnished and unattractive which actually means that certain people in the club have not done their job. including, IMO, the commercial 'expert' brought in from Leicester.

Bit unfair on Paul Hunt – however a few other PL clubs did not have sponsors agreed around April time but managed to sort themselves out.

Corporate Social Responsibility is growing in importance but for a club, in Rovers' present predicament, to 'give-up' something potentially approaching 5% of turnover, it is ridiculous.

I wonder if some posters on this MB will be as generous in their plaudits if we are sitting at the bottom of the PL come the next transfer window, or even before the end of August, without a pot to p1ss in ?

Bottom of the premiership without a pot to ###### in, we’ll still be there, will you?

As I said last night this is a fantastic gesture and Princes Trust deserve this exposure.

I will buying a top ASAP!

For the first time since 1978 I have to agree with you imy.

We can discuss whether or not they had paid sponsors lined up or not but the fact of the matter is they have given the space on the front of the shirt to a charity in the form of The Princes Trust. It's a good thing to do. End of.

Let's be honest Venky's could quite easily have put their own stupid logo on there, but they haven't.

Hat's off to them for once.

I like the shirt and will be buying a replica for the first time since the second of the HSA shirts [which is still perfectly usable; what am I thinking of, throwing money around like that?! ;) ]

I've no idea about any of the machinations regarding negotiations for commercial sponsors, but think that this is [it can certainly be presented as] a very smart move, particularly in view of all the disturbances of the last week.

From memory, Villa got quite a lot of kudos for their Acorn [a local Children's hospice - it would have been the equivalent of us supporting Derian House Hospice in Chorley] shirts 2 or 3 seasons ago but then moved back into commercial sponsorship; their shirts now advertise a Malaysian company operating casinos.

Implicit in the statement on the club's website is that it's a 1-year only deal; so, hopefully, the club's commercial department can now use the forthcoming season to sort out an acceptable deal for commercial sponsorship in 2012/13 season.

That's just Bull Mercerman, apart from the financial side(which no doubt the Roa's will have made an allowance for) why on earth would anyone have an objection to a charity concerned with helping youth on the shirt?

Looks great on the shirt too.

My sister works in marketing like me, although she earns 150k but she is 10 years older, anyway she negoisated the Wimbledon shirt deal in approx 1998/99. They got a sponsorship for 100k a year. they were quite please with that.

I am hoping that Venkys are doing this for a year creating some good PR for themselves. Providing they still provide the investment as promised, in the current climate I doubt they were offered a deal that was mind blowing.

If we have a successful season "if" next year they will be on the back of a good PR stunt and able to get a bit more value.

I think the fact that Venkys didn't take any sponsorship offer shows that they are sercure in there finances, otherwise there is no way they would have done that.

Yes, I will just like in 1971/72 when we were almost rock bottom of the old Third Division for a spell with gates down to about 5 or 6 thousand. Where were you then ?

leaving it to now is complete bunglism by the dippers. We would have been better to take the cash on offer and add it to wages for better players and we are not rolling in the money like a barca are we? if they want a charity why not one for true heroes like help for heroes!

we are not are a charity we are in the premier league money machine ,like it or not and every penny made counts? does it not? roll on the minus ones with feathered tinted glasses!

The owners know the depth of feeling about them among supporters at present so I doubt they would have considered putting their name on the shirt.

Some cynical folk would say this is an empty gesture aimed at appeasing supporters after the failure to find a commercial sponsor.

I think, and this maybe wrong, but apart from the Bet24 deal rovers have never really commanded a large sponsorship deal. To mention City's sponsorship deal or any of the top 5, in relation to the money we could loose out on I think is over estimating what our club would expect to get from a shirt sponsor.

I expect it's roughly between £1-2m a season received on shirt sponsorship and if trading that off for improving the club and the owners image and reputation, then it's is a fair one IMO.

It also gives Hunt a bit more of a chance to get a top deal in place with a commercial sponsor for next season. The poor guys only been here a couple of months and he's getting grief for not getting a massive shirt deal. I think in the circumstances, he's done quite well with this.

Would be very interesting to see the shirt sales numbers for Villa for the past 5 seasons (including the Acorns seasons), to see if it had any effect on sales.

I totally agree that it is nice NOT to look like a shopping bag from Bet24, like we did a few years ago.

I would also like to point out that in recent years a few clubs have started the season with no sponsor (West Brom and West Ham springs to mind). I think it is a very good decision, and a long term very good marketing plan.

I wonder though, when the new financial fair play rules comes into play, what effect will something like this have? Surely if a club decides to give away the shirt sponsor to a charity, it should allow the owners to put in a chunk of money to make up for the loss, without putting the club in trouble for not meeting the "break even" rules?

As I said earlier, doing something like this should be encouraged, and more clubs should no doubt do the same. It would bring some dignity back to the game.

.

would you rather have the venkys get a good reputation or would you rather have spend 5 million on a better player or 3 million on an inferir one?

Nice gesture, don't agree with the practicality of it. We aren't Barcelona, every penny available for strengthening the playing squad should be utilised. The Venkys brand benefits from this, the club not so much. I fully support the Princes Trust and appreciate Venkys for doing this but it feels like a compromise on their part, otherwise we wouldn't have waited so long to hear about it. Had they announced it a couple of months back I might have been less cynical, but as it stands it feels like a waste of foregone resources for a PR gesture. Long term view is great as long as it doesn't come at the expense of the short term. Yes it's likely we've only lost a couple of million but that's a third of our total spending and we won't sell a Phil Jones every season.
