Got Iron Maiden at the MEN in few weeks time. Seen them 5 times before, but 23yrs since my last outing to see them

Just seen Iron Maiden tonight in Sheffield, fantastic show as always. Will be at the MEN on Thursday as well (and two nights at the O2 next Fri and Sat).

@ Ackroyd - did the band lash out any Purple/Sabs classics?

In a live CD I have of his, after one of the songs he says he will no longer play "Purple/Sab/whatever" songs, but only "the music of Glenn Hughes". I don't know if that's still the case though. Sounds like he's still playing Burn though. Gettin' Tighter is probably one of the best things he did with Purple, in my opinion. Not really Purple's sound, but fantastic musicanship all round.

My favourite album with Hughes is the album he did with Iommi called 'Fused'. Fantastic songs from start to finish.

Just found out that ex-Threshold singer Andrew McDermott has passed away due to ongoing recent health problems. Really shocking news, as he would have only been in his late 30s I imagine and leaves his wife and child behind him.

I never listened to his music outside of Threshold, but Threshold with Andrew has been one of my favourite bands of recent times and their last album with him, "Dead Reckoning" is in my opinion, one of the best metal/prog albums of the past 5 years. I encourage people to check this band out and make sure Andrew's voice doesn't die with him. I guarantee you'll be surprised at how good it is in comparison to how little know that this band exists!

Final word on the Iron Maiden tour.

When the former Millenium Dome was turned into a music venue, I wondered why on earth it was needed - London already had major indoor venues such as Earls Court, the London Arena, Wembley Arena, and a notch down the likes of Brixton, Shepherds Bush, Hammersmith and even the Royal Albert Hall.

So when we arrived at the O2 on Friday night to see Iron Maiden and found our seats were on the very back row of the top tier, as far away from the stage as they could possibly be ... I thought oh well, this will sound crap. The sound at Sheffield Arena hadn't been great, although MEN was better. I do think that bands with big sound are much more enjoyable in smaller venues like Manchester Apollo, but these guys have outgrown that so need to do the Arenas.

View from the very back row of the O2 -->

But even from that distant spot, the improvement in sound after Sheffield and Manchester was immediately obvious. The O2 must insist that bands use the installed sound system (and why wouldn't you) ... whereas the others like MEN probably rely on touring bands to have their own. The sound is absolutely brilliant in the O2. This might also explain why ... (from Wiki) -

The arena was built to reduce echoing which has previously been a problem in many London music venues.[6] The sound manager for U2, Joe O'Herlihy, worked with acoustic engineers to introduce measures such as sound absorbing material on the arena roof and the bottom of strategically placed seats to reduce echoing.

There are also speakers all around the roof and in the central dropdown - made a massive difference in that top tier. On Saturday night we were lower tier and very central - sounded even better and of course much closer to the action.

So to Iron Maiden and what a fantastic show, and what a band. Seeing this gig four times wasn't enough - it got better with each viewing. Although the tour was titled "The Final Frontier" they will be back, and I would urge anyone who appreciates real music (even if not heavy metal) to go and see them.

Went to the Bloodstock festival this weekend, a couple of bands people on here will know...

Motorhead - awful performance. I've seen them twice before, both fairly good. They were dire here though. Barely played an hour of a headlining set, Lemmy was somehow even more drunk than usual and was literally slurring everything. band kept going off stage. didn't look like they wanted to be there, a lot of disappointed people.

WASP - on the opposite end of the scale, were excellent. Charasmatic, energetic and catchy... the 80's bands generally know how to put on a show and WASP didn't let anybody down!

Went to see Machine Head at Manc central on Tuesday night, was a great do! Going to see Biohazard in January at the academy also, though they're missing Evan Seinfeld now I believe!

I have form here: Peepers rock disco, Vulcan and various other rock pubs in the town were brilliant. There also live bands on most weekends in a couple of pubs.

In the later 70s and early 80s there was rock band on every week at the KGH . I also saw Priest in 78 and Hawkwind, UFO, Iron Maiden on their first tour and countless others. It was a great scene. Saw Zeppelin in 79 at Knebworth. Happy days.
