Watching the greatest band (IMO) ever in March at the accademy. Seen em umpteen times starting in the 70's. The Stranglers, lights go down and the haunting notes to Waltzinblack bounce round the venue, my skin erupts with goose bumps. Oh yes, can't wait, No more heroes, Something better change, 5 minutes, Nucleur Device, The Raven, Toiler on the sea, Down in the sewer..... all the greats and much more!! Come on!! Taking both teenage sons to show em what proper musicians can do!

I`ll definitely be there!

I saw them at 53 degrees club in Preston a few months ago (great venue by the way!) and they were brilliant, seriously one of the best bands you will see live and Jet Black is a legend.I half expect him to come on stage in a mobility scooter (he`s 72). :P

Stranglers ??

This is the heavy metal thread !!!

Back in the 70's I used to frequent a couple of 'shady' places. The Buzz inn and the swan, the former hosting a punk night, the latter a heavy metal night. Strange as it may seem, all the heavies loved the Stranglers (even though they did appear during the punk era) and the punks thought they were to 'musical'! I always used to think they fell inbetween the two varieties.

Many heavies I knew bought Rattus Norvegicus (the debut LP) and loved it.

My applogies if you feel it's posted on the wrong thread.

Strange seeing the Stranglers in a heavy metal thread but I've always been a fan. A thousand years ago they played George's, and that afternoon JJB scared a teenage A.S.

Struggling to decide which Festival to go to this year - Download or Sonisphere? Went to Sonisphere last year for the Big 4 and it was immense. Metallica are headlining Download this year with Black Sabbath and The Prodidgy but Green Day and Blink 182 are on at Sonisphere.

I've never seen Blink 182 live but then Metallica do the best live set of anyone i've ever seen so it's a tough one but l'm edging towards Sonisphere as the whole set up is much better. And my 12 year old daughter is coming this year so l've gotta look at the family camping.

Sonisphere havent confirmed anything yet - i've heard all sorts mentioned. Download have another announcement next week I believe.

I'll be at DL2012 - quite like the RIP camping, nice and peaceful but still get a good drink in.

Anyone else excited by the At the Drive In reunion? Me and a lot of our friends spent our late teens and early 20's listening to them and the Mars Volta but none of us ever got to see them. Seen Mars Volta 3 times and they've always been amazing but if At the Drive In can recapture the fire they had back then it could definitely enter my top ten gigs of all tiime, one things for sure, we're gonna hurt like hell the day after

Bad news on rock radio today:( tony iommi has cancer.

Thats terrible news. His playing defined my childhood. Over 30 years later, "Heaven and Hell" is still one of the best metal albums ever made. Cozy Powell, Gary Moore, now old plastic fingers himself - we'll never see the like of those guys again. The golden age of british heavy rock is fading. :(

Heaven and Hell is definitely one of my favourite albums of all time. Dio was my idol when I was growing up and it was a tragic day for me when he died, I even flew over to LA for the memorial service. Iommi is another musician I held almost in as high regard and I hope he pulls through because he still has so much to offer. His last couple of albums with Heaven And Hell and his solo albums with Glenn Hughes feature some incredible riffs from him, he definitely still has it. Sad times... (Please don't use that word again) cancer.

Dio.. Another legend. These guys are irreplaceable and immortal - at least to metalheads of our generation. I remember queuing up outside Utopia Records in Martin Place, Sydney in 1985 as a spotty, greasy, mullet haired, black t-shirted, skinny jeaned, denim jacketed 14 year old with about 100 other similar kids to buy "Sacred Heart" on its release date. Then going back to my mates house and playing it over and over a dozen times till we knew every song, taking in every tiny detail of the record cover (as one did) - there was something magical about records, and the sleeves. Dio has to rate as one of Richie Blackmores greatest discoveries. Long Live Rock n Roll !

Warning! Lemmy swears! It's loud!

Give it a go - it might make you feel better. or it might not...

...but either way this is timely.

Lyrics...

You might be a financial wizard,
With a sack of loot,
All I see is a slimy lizard,
With an expensive suit,
Go on and run your corporation,
Go and kiss some ass,
You might buy half of the nation,
But you can't buy class.

You illegitimates think it's funny,
Lyin' and thieving all your life,
Think all there is money,
Got your future strapped up tight,
Just 'Cos You Got The Power,
That don't mean you got the right.

You can take my fingers babe,
You can take my eyes,
You can take my past and future,
It won't make you wise,
You can have me thrown in jail,
You can steal my booze,
You can even read my mail,
Step on my blue suede shoes.

You illegitimates must be clever,
Got it mapped out in black and white,
But don't forget you'll never,
Get a dog to walk upright,
Just 'Cos You Got The Power,
That don't mean you got the right.

Go on out make another deal,
Feed your big fat face,
Go on out and cop a feel,
Get on somebody's case,
You surely would be satisfied,
If you could have it all,
But time ain't on your side,
You're going to the wall.

You think that life's all dollars,
Greed and lust and spite,
But I wasn't born to follow,
Like to get my sleep at night,
Just 'Cos You Got The Power,
That don't mean you got the right.

Finally got to watch Lemmy The Movie this week.

IF you took away the music legend part of his career, he could come across as being a knife weilding, drug addled, nazi alcoholic. He clearly likes a drink, and a narcotic too, but throughout the movie his basic decent principles come across. He won't talk openly about his drug abuse, apart his speed taking (presumably from the 70s) as he thinks it glorifies drug taking to his young fans which he disapproves of. His massive WW1 and WWII memorabilia , esp Iron Eagles, Crosses, and Nazi German stuff possibly suggest otherwise, but he is fairly knowledgeable about the history of war as opposed to collecting the hardware as a means to reinforce any racist tendencies.(A string of black girlfriends lend weight to this).

He lives in a small flat of Sunset strip, which looks like an old blokes dump-and drinks alone in a local bar (Rainbow bar and grill!) playing video games-just like any old single bloke. Which is what he is. Except he has a mindblowing career in music, and is a hero to nearly all the leading players in rock music.

Saw a decent metal/rock covers band at the Borough in Darwen last Saturday night....STONEFIST B)

All local lads, all familiar faces from the Blackburn rock era (Vulcan, Courts, Napier etc....)

Did lots of stuff like Motorhead, Thin lizzy, Iron Maiden, Zodiac Mindwarp, Bon Jovi <_<

A good metal night was had by all. Well worth a listen if you get chance to see them ;)

Thanks for the 'heads up' . I'll definitely keep an eye out for it. Sounds fascinating.

If you like this sort of thing, and if you don't then why bother reading the thread, there is a cracking series running on Sky Arts 1 (channel 243) every week night for 11 nights, Metal Evolution. You may have missed the first two, it started Monday. On at 9.00.
