Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted July 5, 2011 Moderation Lead Posted July 5, 2011 I know there's a 'last night on telly I watched' thread, but this is a touch more specialised, so please bear with me on my debut thread! I've been watching a lot of the big TV shows over the last year or so since finishing The Sopranos and Prison break, and I've watched 24, Lost, The Wire and am currently watching 'Oz' as a friend of mine who recommended The Wire said it had a few actors from The Wire and The Sopranos in it, and it hasn't disappointed! I'm halfway through Oz now and it's really been good! Can anyone recommend any other TV shows of similar length, that really take you on a journey? Quote

Blue n White Rover Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Entourage 8 series with 12ish episodes in each series. Great watch. Quote
American Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Breaking Bad - currently the best show on TV, about a chemistry teacher who gets diagnosed with terminal cancer, so starts cooking meth. The Shield - Great US cop show, watch the first episode and if you don't like it, don't bother, but you should like it. I'm currently watching it all the way through for a 3rd time. Rescue Me - About a firefighter in NYC, has had its ups and downs, but overall a quality show. Final series starts in 8 days. Quote
Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted July 5, 2011 Author Moderation Lead Posted July 5, 2011 I've seen BB, and can't wait for the new season, forgot to mention that above! Quote
Commondore Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 I'm surprised no one has mentioned Six Feet Under yet, it really is the best thing ever done for TV but maybe it doesn't resonate with all you big northern macho he-men? Quote
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 (edited) Most of the ones I would recommend have already been mentioned. Dexter is another worth looking at, after the first episode you will probably be able to decide whether you want to stick with it or not. Edited July 5, 2011 by RibbleValleyRover Quote
Tim Southampton Rover Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 OZ is one of my favourite TV series of all time because every season is brilliant rather than starting off good and gradually declining in quality like a lot of TV series do. So many people from Lost and Law and Order in it too! Quote
SamTheShrew Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Sons of Anarchy is a class programme, def worth a watch. I'm currently persevering with Chicago Code as it was made by the same guy as the Shield. Bit of a slow start, but its gradually improving Quote
sloth_frattelli Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 I've been looking for inspiration for a boxset since finishing Sopranos recently. I didn't think anything would top The Wire but The Sopranos maybe just pipped it. Had all of the Lost series as well but as everyone knows, that went out with a whimper so I sold my collection. I enjoy being able to watch the next episode whenever I feel like it so I tend to wait for shows to finish before sourcing the DVD boxset. I couldn't wait a whole week between episodes, or months between seasons. From reading the above, Breaking Bad sounds good. It's always been the intention to watch the likes of Oz, 24, Prison Break as well. And it's even better knowing that Hollywood just keeps churning out more great TV, like Boardwalk Empire and Treme as they will be sourced some day too. Quote
Rovermatt Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 (edited) Battlestar Galactica Boardwalk Empire Treme Mad Men The Walking Dead Six Feet Under Deadwood Dexter The West Wing Game of Thrones Entourage Californication As far as HBO's miniseries go, Band of Brothers, The Pacific and John Adams are pretty peerless. Sons of Anarchy is a class programme, def worth a watch. I'm currently persevering with Chicago Code as it was made by the same guy as the Shield. Bit of a slow start, but its gradually improving I wouldn't bother to be honest. It doesn't get much better and was rightly cancelled after 13 episodes. Edited July 6, 2011 by Rovermatt 1 Quote
speeeeeeedie Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Big Love. It's about a bloke in Utah married to 3 women. It finished a few months ago. I enjoyed it. 1 Quote
dave birch Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 I know you probably can't get any of these, but anything by Chris Lilly starting with " We Can Be Heroes" and finishing with "Angry Boys" Funny as hell, totally, yes "Totally" unPC. It is not suitable for Americans, full stop. Sorry guys, you just don't have that kind of sense of humour, as has been proven by some remarks on twitter. Quote
Rovermatt Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 (edited) Saw Angry Boys the other day (it's on BBC 3 here). Two of the sketches were quite weak but the Aussie twins are hilarious. Edited July 6, 2011 by Rovermatt Quote
ben_the_beast Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 How has nobody mentioned Rome. By far the most fantastic programme I have ever watched. I've never been one for repeatedly watching DVDs but I have watched Rome over and over again. Absolutely obsessed. Blood, gore, sex, brilliant acting and story lines aplenty. 1 Quote

Band of Brothers is quality, one of my favourite shows. I have been looking to buy the walking dead, is it a decent series? Quote

Rovermatt Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Band of Brothers is quality, one of my favourite shows. I have been looking to buy the walking dead, is it a decent series? It's excellent however there's only six episodes in season one. Best to wait for it to drop in price or download it. Quote
MarkBRFC71 Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA. +1 - tremendous stuff (so far - just into series 3). And, although it's only 7 or 8 episodes long, Generation Kill is outstanding. Quote
Nelsta Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Arrested Development. Modern Family. Firefly. Falling Skies. This is england 86. Quote
rebelmswar Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Band of Brothers is quality, one of my favourite shows. I have been looking to buy the walking dead, is it a decent series? The Walking Dead was very good, but I love anything to do with zombies. Been watching Game of Thrones which I find very very good but I always blanch at the amount of sex in it. I am not a prude but there is just no need for all of that to move the story. Rome was fantastic too. +1 - tremendous stuff (so far - just into series 3). And, although it's only 7 or 8 episodes long, Generation Kill is outstanding. I have watched it twice love it. I called the ending while watching season 4 see if you can figure it out. Quote
Sparky Marky Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 I've only recently discovered Curb Your Enthusiasm and it's first class. Quote
