[Archived] Could the Sky fall?

Recommended Posts

On the contrary, I hope it happens. Rovers might suffer but anything that reduces the power of the so-called big clubs, reduces the amount of money washing around the game in the pockets of agents and players, leads to the demise of the wretched Champions League and results in a complete restructuring of the whole rotten structure, is to be welcomed.

Boom!!! And the bombs start dropping... totally agree with this post! Football is the best game on earth and it's being ruined by the selfish and greedy.

As long as you understand lots of people think we(Rovers)started it off with Sky, as of course we bought the title. Of course complete rubbish but lots of people think that.

Just as an aside, on top of that one could argue also that BRFC as founder members of both the Football League and the Premier Division (along with only Villa and Everton) that we have been a major player in the chain of events from Day 1 in 1888.

1888 MMM does that mean we can not blame Venkys for this???

An easy reply to that. Jack Walker was way ahead of the game and saw the TV money / player wage explosion coming - if it hadn't been Rovers it would have another club. Rovers were also one of the world's first professional clubs and one of the first to recruit players from outside the area - witness the number of Scots in early Rovers teams. We've always been a progressive and forward looking club. Then came Venky's.

  • 5 months later...

So here's my quandary.

Sky's grip on the PL since it's inception has seen finances rocket upward but is it possible that the current News International scandal could ultimately bring about the death of football as we know it?

Although there is still a way to go, could Murdoch's empire become so badly damaged that it begins to fail, the share price drops, forcing austerity measures, and the money that BSkyB pump into football could be withdrawn, or at least reduced significantly at the end of this deal?

Or is football still such a profitable business that BSkyB makes enough money out of the deal for it to be insulated against any NI group problems?

Even if ITV, ESPN or Virgin were to come in, the total package would surely be less than at present. What would be the repercussions? For instance, are player wages tied in to TV deal income and could therefore be reduced in this event? That may reduce our liabilities but could players to seek transfers to better paying clubs?

Previously I would have said that Rovers could profit from such a scenario but if rumours of a mortgage against future income are to be believed, could this actually mean we end up suffering further?

It's certainly given me a fresh take on the NI scandal, if nothing else.

Basically I see it both need each.other. Neither would want to lose the other.

Due to money in sport / football sky needs football and football needs sky.

Though if rovers go down, ny sky subscription will.be ended.

Because it concentrates power, wealth and influence in a few clubs in this country, to the detriment of clubs like Rovers. Why do you think we lost Phil Jones ?

It has led to the dimunition of the FA Cup, the League Cup, the demise of the Uefa Cup and European Cup-winners Cup, and the players are so knackered by summer it has buggered up the World Cup.

And until it reaches the later knockout stages (the old European Cup), it's also a crashing bore.

I suggest you look at yourself before calling others foolish.

Sky going down the plughole might not affect the Champions League, but we can but hope.

We may have our differences of opinion on other subjects, but Jim is spot on here.

Yep. The only addition I would make to Jim's post is that it usually stays boring into the knock-out rounds.

The last time I made an effort to watch a 'Champions' League game was the much hyped Arsenal v Barcelona. One for the purists apparently. Turned out to be two teams trying to out 'keep-ball' each other (addmittedly Barca are actually a very good side) and was shockingly boring.

No replacement for the now dead FA cup.

Apple looking at PL TV rights, and possibly Google too

Looks like the money will just go up and up as expected.

Hopefully, Venkys knows this and they decide to protect Rovers PL status a bit more aggressively.

On the subject of what Jim said, I'd much rather one of those companies bid on the Championship games. But some juice into the lower leagues. I for one wouldn't shy away from watching at all.

When are you going to stick your head above the parepet and say what you would do?

When he's finished building that car park for Venkys charging southern away fans £10 to park.

It's going to be our transfer fund in 2025.

We've got a £10 transfer fund in 2012...

I've no idea. There's no point in paying £10 to park when it's £3 to park elsewhere AND one gets away from the ground quicker.

I don't think you really understood my first point did you?

I just park at the services and walk down to Ewood, that way it's free to park.

I've parked in town before and it took ages to get out far longer than the walk.
