Transfer Window Chat Thread

what makes it all the sadder is that rovers, given a good start, coulkd easily be looking at 12 points on the board by the middle of september IF thet had improved the squad. that could be vital.

Bingo!!

And this is the important bit, we need to hit the ground running, we need early points with the fixtures we have, no games are easy but our first few are easier than what is to follow, October is a real worry with the games we have.

I will quote Kenny Dalglish 'you need to get as many points as you can as quickly as you can' that takes the pressure off a little, if we go into October rock bottom, whoever we sign, we will be in trouble, signings should have been made by now, probably a couple of weeks ago so we could have started getting them to gel!!

I agree with plenty of what you have to say. The side hasn't changed much since Wolves and with the additions of Petrovic/Goodwillie combined with Formica and Rochina, we could have a reasonable season. My issue is that this transfer window was an opportunity for Venky's to really win the fans over. To bring in, not star names, but decent players for reasonable money in positions we badly needed to fill. Instead we're no stronger than we were at the end of the year. Im disappointed with the transfer window so far but I think there are reasons to be optimistic nevertheless.

I'm certainly not saying that we've had the off season to trump all off seasons but we're not in such bad shape. The squad isn't much changed from the one that was doing pretty well under Allardyce and the upturn in form towards the back end of last season gives some hope.

It will be interesting to see how we line up but I'd expect Petrovic and N'Zonzi to be solid in the middle and think a back line of Givet, Samba, Nelsen and Salgado plus Robinson behind will also be solid. If we're difficult to score against then we shouldn't do too poorly.

Back to your point about bringing in decent players for reasonable money, I'd say that Rochina, Formica, Goodwillie and Petrovic are a good start. All are young, look decent and have potential. Of course we need to bring in a few more to really kick on but what annoys me is the constant harping that we're sure fire relegation candidates. I don't particularly rate any of the promoted teams (or at least don't fear them), Bolton look terrible up front and Newcastle look a mess. We could go down but to imply it is a near certainty is frankly ridiculous.

Either way, bring on the first game already!

I agree, I dont see why we have been labelled as certain relegation candidates. I just think we are extremely unfashionable at the moment. The sacking of Allardyce and the promises of Ronaldinho etc have made us look rather stupid.

When you actually look at our team we are no weaker than any of the promoted sides or the likes of Wolves, Bolton, Wigan etc.

Rochina, Formica, Goodwillie and Petrovic are all good talents and hopefully they can all kick on. But what we need is someone relatively proven to come in. In particular a striker. If we can grab a solid CB and a decent striker who can get us 10 goals a season then I think we can look for midtable finish. The worry is that we have waited too long to make these moves in the market. I hope I'm proved wrong.

Not changed much since wolves?... err what..

The 18 man squad for the Wolves game:

Starting 11: Robinson, Salgado, PJ, Samba, Givet, Olsson, Hoilett, JJ, Roberts, Emerton <-- Two of the key players that day gone and one injured

Subs 7: Bunn, Peders, Mame, Andrews, RSC, Benjani, Dunn <-- three gone and one in talks with another club

Not sure about anyones maths but 6 out of 18 is a fair few changes imo especially with two of the key players gone... Petrovic and Goodwillie in, but I can't see the young lads been thrown straight into the thick of it as neither has EPL experience.

Kalinic was also our top scorer last season, Diouf always has been a consistent little sod, PJ was a bloody good player for us, Andrews for all his sins was at least always fit and scored a couple, JJ was vital for us at the end of the season and the likes of RSC and Mame at least provided us with options and much needed backup.

Have to remember how long it took for Formica, Kalinic and Rochina to settle in England.. none of these lads played much part in their opening 6 months so surely we can't expect that much from Petrovic and Goodwillie. JJ was a different kettle of fish, much more of an established player and certainly not a young lad. The last thing we will want to do is throw the lads in to early and utterly shatter their confidence.

We are starting the first day of the season with a likely formation that includes Hanley and Givet in central defence.. an obviously tiring Salgado on the right, Olsson on the left who is still not an established LB (imo his positioning and reading of the game in that position still needs allot of work and given the CD pairing he won't be getting much cover or support) and unless we throw Petrovic straight in at the deep end limited cover from midfield and a very very short back line not to mention Henley and Anderson as the only options on the subs bench.

I am also sceptical about us going into the new season with 2 keepers.. just worries me especially given how much clubs in recent years have had issues with keeper injuries.

Agree there totally.. added to that I personally think it will deter potential signings up to the end of the window.. given the write ups on us if we also had a bad start who would want to join.

Big IF there.. Only Samba and Robinson from those 5 are really the only ones who are more than just about good enough. Still, there is time for a new signing and there seems to be quite a few weak teams this year.

CryerRovers Andrew Cryer from twitterWorth picking up the Lt tmrw. It will have the answer to the question you have all been asking........Niteis a transfer deal or sponsorship deal??????

With the shirt so close to launch I'd say sponsership news.

An hour ago Andrew Cryer answered a question about a sponsor being found with an emphatic No.

Or could that have been about Bentley, what fun.

Just got back in from work and thought this board might cheer me up. Jesus some of you are just depressing me. We have plently to look forward to. Formica and Rochina are like two new signings, add to them Goodwillie and Petrovic, we have 4 very good young players. We are in the process of getting some big wage earners off the wage bill and we were playing some of the best passing football we have seen for quite a few years.

I am sorry for being positive but surely its better than all the doom and gloom.

Listening to the radio on various phone-ins and we are not the only ones not happy. I think out the 20 Premiership clubs only Man U, Liverpool, Sunderland and maybe West Brom fans are happy. Bolton, Villa and Wigan all weaker than last year and the 3 promoted clubs aren't great. Everyone knows most of the deals will be conducted on dealine day when chairmen start to panic and realise you can't seriously quote 12-14 million for your reserves.

We are one striker away from a very good young attacking team. One of the main reasons most clubs don't do their business till now is the amount you can save on wages. If you buy someone on 40k 1st July instead of 31st Aug that's £240,000 saved give or take a 5 week month. If you're signing 4 players that's a cool million so lets all get a reality check.

We all got excited when Nicko told us we had 50million to spend now that has turned out to be wrong we are obviously upset but I don't remember Venkys ever saying we had 50million??

For the life of me I can't quite understand the drastic pessimism about our upcoming season?

where you by chance in a coma for the last 6months of the season, i'll get you up to speed........we were truly awful for long periods, 22ts from 21 games from our fearless gormless leader extrapolated over a full season comes to about 40pts.

We've done absolutely nothing to make us stronger goodwillie and petrovic will hopefully come good but rright now you'd swap them both to have jones back, need a couple of blinding signings or a new manager to make me as optimistic as the rao's/roberts/kean (deluded buggers)

Not being pessimistic was pointing out undesputed facts my friend in regards to us having a much different to the side to the one that beat them on the last day of the season.. I still think we have a chance in that game but with Johnson in defence, Michael Kightly back in the starting line up and our season starting back line we should be in for a game. Lets also not forget they have 3 players who scored more than any we have in our starting line up last season and have improved their defense.

I think the 1st 45 minutes vs Wolves last season papered over a lot of cracks....we were terrible in most of the games Kean were in charge, Stoke Newcastle Blackpool Brum all at home....diabolical!

The fact is we are weaker.....

Reading Jason Roberts comments on Twitter makes everything sound bright and rosy......he keeps saying the Owners are great and want to bring in quality...just wait and see etc.

Cant help but think he's being told to write this nonsense....... I mean Venkys have only just gottheir act together.....Selling players for 17m and signing players for 2m isnt exciting.

It is however very frustrating! :(

Similar Roberts' rubbish in the LT. He is so far up the backsides of Venky's and Kean that it is untrue. He needs to earn the right to 'preach' - give me a dozen PL goals in season and I might listen.
