I am not dissing the players mentioned Mangala will probably turn into a good player but we can't really expect a 20Y'Old to come in replace PJ & organise the defence if this guy is cheap enough then maybe however the majority should go on a experienced C/Half Onuha etc.

Mangala is a quality player but reports in Belgium and Portugal suggest he is about to sign for Porto

Sorry I do apologise I see Oklahoma has already reported this.

who's peacock?

do you not mean Matthew Pearson?

Edited, senior moment!!

Regardless of our defense issues, looking at the midfield and strike force, the bench yesterday looked so low on quality.

Also think we are talking too much about these young stars of the future when a lot of them have much to learn before they can make an impact in the Premier League.

I do agree to an extent, but Jones was only 17/18 when he came through and for me, playing people out of position is really not the way to go, positional sense and experience in that position is a massive thing at centre back, one taking the ball and one dropping off, noticed they (Wloves) came through the channels as we were caught too square at the back!

Don't know if they've been mentioned on here but a Utd fan on another forum has heard rumours of loans deals for Macheda and Gibson.

Would be a realistic shout, I mentioned Macheda earlier - makes sense, young and not featuring for United.

we dont need a young striker who might come good, unproven, rather like a certain player we signed from chelsea, who had potential and look how that turned out. We need an exprienced, goalscoring striker, signed permanently, not on loan as when a loan player does well, at the end of the season, bigger clubs, usually come knocking.

You can only have 1 from any club. So IF its rumoured those two are heading here, id go Macheda on loan, Gibson on a permanent deal

Yes but at least he has played in the Premiership, if we sign Macheda and also Raul then good.

I would go for Jonny Evans and Gibson, Fergie has four top centre backs and Evans is better than most, young and hungry, then Raul, if we have Raul, Roberts, Goodwillie and another loanee we may be close to having a squad.

However, I fear our owners will not spend money, even if Samba goes, I may be wrong but I have no faith, trust or whatever in Venkys!!

Fed up of the constant texts from mates who support other clubs, today I got one, said his lad wanted a cowboy outfit for christmas, so he bought him Blackburn Rover Football Club

Ha still can't get over the pro Gibson brigade, worst player on the pitch last Wednesday against Croatia,he had to be carried by Glenn whelan,Keith Andrews is a better player and thats a fact,we need raul and a good experienced centre half,i would also like vieirinha but doubt that deals still live unless we upped our bid.

I would have played N'Zonzi as sitter and played Pearson at Centre back, Pearson in my opinion will be better than Hanley and they formed a great partnership with the cup winning reserve team, as we know, Partnerships at the centre of defence are a big plus. I know it would have been a debut for the lad but Woves arent blessed with the best strikers and the way the lad played against Man U and Chelsea reserves (who had lots of experience in their sides) shows he was worth a shout!

Benjani by the way did start under Kean!!

More importantly, which illustrates what a clown we have as a manager, we let Gavin Gunning go to Dundee when Nelsen was injured and knew he wouldnt be ready for the season, Samba probably on his way and Jones gone, now you dont have to be a rocket scientist to work that one out. To conclude, we have Myles Anderson, supposedly a centre back of the Chris Smalling mould after his 5 minute Cameo for Aberdeen (his only professional appearance) on the bench and didnt start!! Now Imy, there is a reason for that and it stinks,

Anderson is nowhere near good enough and thats why he didnt play the lad, so why not put young Pearson on the bench or in the team!!!

May I ask a question outside of the strengthening the squad argument?

Of the players that have gone only JJ and PJ need significant replacements and we're all hoping Petrovic is one of them.

Santa Cruz had 7 starts, 2 sub appearances and did very little, Benjani had 6 starts, 12 subs and bagged three goals. I see no reason why Goodwillie can't be the replacement for both of them.

Formica will have to replace Kalinic's 15 starts, 3 subs and 5 goals.

Rochina can replace MB Diouf's 17 starts, 10 subs and 3 goals.

Does anyone think this is unreasonable?

We also only really need to replace Phil Jones as a defender. Many of the games he played last year were as a midfielder and I don't think there is much difference between him and N'Zonzi in that role. So in terms of replacing him for this season can't we have Samba and Nelsen as our main centre backs with Givet and Hanley as backup? Of course this assumes that Nelsen can stay fit but he did start 28 games last season.

The discussion has been framed in terms of who we're replacing and this seems to have made it a little abstract. What are we really looking at? Where are our strengths and weaknesses?

'keeper we're fine.

Left back Olsson and Givet are fine.

Centre back Nelsen, Samba, Givet, Hanley are fine.

Right back Salgado, Ribeiro and Emerton (I'd play him there!) looks weak though Salgado was decent last year.

Centre midfielders of N'Zonzi, Petrovic, Dunn, Emerton is ok.

Left midfield of Pedersen, Rochina and some Olsson could go either way.

Right midfield of Hoilett, Emerton is good but severely lacks depth.

Support striker of Formica, Rochina, Dunn could go either way.

Main striker of Roberts, Goodwillie looks very light.

Plus Henley, Morris, Lowe as emergency cover (or better?) and the other reserve kids I don't know enough about.

I don't think it makes sense to sign a player just to cover an injury gap of a couple of weeks so the signings I want to see are a main striker, a winger and a right back. If we do that it's a case of rolling the dice on the players we've brought in. There aren't any guarantees in football no matter what you spend.

Kelbo no chance of any c. Backs from united after the match at Stoke, there going to be short themselves. Can't think of any more freeby's left in premier league, and we dont appear to have money to spend.Just hope that S.K.can pull a few rabbits out of the hat from abroad. They say it's darkest just before the dawn,i hope i'm wrong but in my experience, when you say things can't get any worse ,they usually do.so for ever the optomist, lets hope Venky's have a couple ofaces up their sleeves, because their leaving it late.

Edsarover and i'm trying to keep my cup half full

Rio's out for 6 weeks, Evans is going nowhere, seems he's still preffered to Jones anyway.

Gibson I'd take, Macheda wouldn't interest me

You want four right backs? Salgado, Ribeiro, Emerton and one more...that's bonkers.

Why are people talking about replacing, that's not what we need. We need to strengthen. Even if we had not sold anyone that would still be the case. Are you forgetting that we saved our PL status on the final day of last season?

I'd quite like to play Emerton there full time. I've been able to understand why he wasn't permanently anointed as our right back. Failing that I wouldn't mind us signing one for a few million to hold down the position for a few years. Salgado can probably do a job for another year mind.

You are right though, our defence as currently configured doesn't need reinforcement. Neither does central midfield.

So... a first choice striker better than who we have and a winger please (or perhaps even Rochina, Formica and Hoilett playing behind the aforementioned main striker with N'Zonzi and Petrovic in front of the defence).

Why do you want a winger?! We have six players who can play there- Olsson, Hoilett, Formica, ROchina, Emerton, Pedersen. Signing a winger makes no sense. Priority order is, for me:-

1) Experienced goalscoring target man striker

2) Experienced ball winning central midfielder

3) Up and coming central defender

4) A young up and coming striker - ideally a target man

5) A specialist left back

Because of the injuries 3) is currently the number one priority - but if everyone was fit the above is accurate in my opinion.

I think that is spot on Joey, now if you can see it, why cant Kean?
