Was reading one of the rags yesterday and they suggested Wolves bought Roger Johnson for £4 million, not the £7 million reported.

If true, major error not attemtping to sign him.

Interesting that Kean in todays LT makes reference to the number who have gone out, and the hole in salaries that must have produced, which needs to be filled. He says its a large number in terms of salary and says we need experienced players in.

He wants "at least 4 more" - with a central defender, midfielder, striker and possibly another central defender his priority.

Don't understand that unless we are selling Samba, or Samba or Nelsen are long term injured (thinking about it it could be the latter....)

Unless he's finally woke up to the fact that Nelsens age and injury record have caught up with him, Givet isn't a long term CB and Hanley simply isn't up to it yet. Apart from the Samba injury which was unforseen the other three are FACTS so why didn't we have at least one CB in for the start of the season.

I understand it – because IF we don’t want a left winger anymore (Vereinha) – it would make sense to shift Givet to left back & Olsson back onto the wing. Therefore leaving just Samba/ Hanley & the ageing Nelsen who seems to get slower every year.

The second half of your post is as wrong as your first. Johnson is a no nonsense Centre half who fits a similar mould to John Terry. We wouldn't have conceded the first goal if we had Johnson that's for certain.

£7m for him is a steal, if we could have got him and Dann for a combined £15m then we would have a ready made very good defence for the next 4 or 5 years.

I think I would agree with that one Modes, probably the two best and affordable ones in the Premiership, with regards to Dann, I see Dalglish has him on the radar!!

Him and Dann got relegated last season as a centre half partnership. One got shipped out to Wolves, the other is languishing in The Championship.

Most annoying part for me is that original list was so good it was scary and had some acheivable targets who moved for decent fees (Piatti, Witsel and co) but now due to whatever reason we have no cash and have missed out on the cream of the freebies and cheap transfers (Diarri, Reo Cocker, Ba etc etc).

We really need to get signing players and quick but without funds we are utterly stuffed.

joey_big_nose, we def need another central defender, last season Cimbonda then PJ when he came back from injury.. Nelson, Samba, Givet have all had injuries at some point in each of the last few seasons (I remember our last fun makeshift defence with Keith Andrews and Gael Givet.. and to quote BFS from that match "We wanted to keep Steven Nzonzi in the front end of the defence to try and win the balls as they were played up to the front two").

The transfer buzz seems to be as quiet as it's ever been this summer at a time when we desperately need players the most.

Either Venky's have been excellent at plugging leaks of late or the money to buy players has run out. I know which one I'm putting my money on

Well that settles it then. The fact is they got relegated, and the only taker of either of these supposedly 'top' centre half's were Wolves.

He looked better then any CB I've seen at Blackburn in a long time on Saturday. And they paid 1 million apparently.

It funny hearing Kean almost embarrassed by the transfer actvities but he's had no urgency until after a massive defeat.

Woodgate, Upson and Brown all available for a no or little fee, maybe not everyones cup of tea but I bet Andrews could have done a better job then Nzonzi at CB, he looked all over the place.

Thomas Hitzlsperger is still without a club. We should be offering him a contract right away. We obviously need someone else with a bit of steel in the centre of midfield. Gibson would be good but I just can't see Man Utd doing us any favours since the Jones saga.

If we're struggling to sign a striker of note then I'd start pressing Man City to see what deal they could offer us in terms of wage contribution to get Santa Cruz off their books. He wasn't great last season but I do think he was unlucky. He played most of his games in that stupid diamond formation. I think the set-up we have now would really suit his style of play, and he would probably enjoy linking up with Formica.

That would just leave a squad defender (how hard can that be, really?) and a winger. Is the Vieirinha deal definitely dead? With Olsson at left back we lack attacking quality after Hoilett; Emerton works hard but lacks quality and Rochina is still very raw.

Na Kean was quoted weeks ago that we had a few bids in, don't think they have anyone really working on getting the deals hurried up though.

I do worry Venkys "new model" for running a club as mentioned in the offer document basically involves turning us into a kids conveyor belt by pushing youngsters into the first team asap which simply does not work.. would explain why every signing (not including loan players) so far fits a standard profile i.e. young, not english, no EPL experience so fairly cheap meaning potentially huge profit margins in the long run even if you get the odd one wrong. Worrying part is the guys who came up with the model have since been dumped (SEM/Kentaro etc) and there are reasons why clubs don't work this way.
