Thomas Hitzlsperger is still without a club. We should be offering him a contract right away. We obviously need someone else with a bit of steel in the centre of midfield. Gibson would be good but I just can't see Man Utd doing us any favours since the Jones saga.

If we're struggling to sign a striker of note then I'd start pressing Man City to see what deal they could offer us in terms of wage contribution to get Santa Cruz off their books. He wasn't great last season but I do think he was unlucky. He played most of his games in that stupid diamond formation. I think the set-up we have now would really suit his style of play, and he would probably enjoy linking up with Formica.

That would just leave a squad defender (how hard can that be, really?) and a winger. Is the Vieirinha deal definitely dead? With Olsson at left back we lack attacking quality after Hoilett; Emerton works hard but lacks quality and Rochina is still very raw.

Reading through the transfer topic on Vital Rovers MB that is pretty much what Tombo1983 (ITK) is saying, Hitz and RSC.

Hitz and Gibson are similar IMO going forward but HItz probably shades him defensively.

Wages probably similar, signing on fee or loan fee??? Gibson the younger model, take your pick.

Interesting that Kean in todays LT makes reference to the number who have gone out, and the hole in salaries that must have produced, which needs to be filled. He says its a large number in terms of salary and says we need experienced players in.

He wants "at least 4 more" - with a central defender, midfielder, striker and possibly another central defender his priority.

Bit late to find this out eh?

When were Maiga a transfer target?

that's a name i havent heard of.. where does it mention rovers ? ;)

gamble on paying that sort of cash for him.

rodellega is valued at a similar price and more proven... idve liked us to go for him, but looks like we've missed the boat on him too.

on hitz. injury history is a worry... and we already have grella!

heard an interesting name today.. as the CB. but waiting on more info before i post anymore on him.

Well that settles it then. The fact is they got relegated, and the only taker of either of these supposedly 'top' centre half's were Wolves.

Would I have minded Jonhson? He'd have been okay. £4m? I'd rather not. £7m? Do me a favour.

Batman? More like the Joker!

Ever thought that Johnson is happily settled in the Midlands and it was an easy move? He could have hung on for a bigger money move if he had wanted to but isn't a moneygrabber like the majority.

Dann and Johnson not only kept Brum up in 09/10 but got them above us and into 9th. If you don't believe they did then they scored 38 goals in that season, 1 per game. The difference in 10/11 was that Dann got injured in January and it lead to them putting Ridgewell and Jirinek in his place who didn't form a good partnership and they conceeded 11 more goals but still failed to have the firepower only getting 37 goals (the worst in the division by a distance).

So Johnson signed for Wolves and not a bigger club because he's so happy in the midlands? Good one.

I suppose Tevez is holding out for a move to a London club because he'd be closer to Buenos Aries?

Johnson is a decent player. Decent. £7m worth of player? No.

Keep trying with the wit- soon it'll be as amusing as your justifications behind the lack of interest in the Birmingham defence from bigger clubs.

someone on here said Wes Brown was useless, and who was that BTW??

He looked better then any CB I've seen at Blackburn in a long time on Saturday. And they paid 1 million apparently.

It funny hearing Kean almost embarrassed by the transfer actvities but he's had no urgency until after a massive defeat.

Woodgate, Upson and Brown all available for a no or little fee, maybe not everyones cup of tea but I bet Andrews could have done a better job then Nzonzi at CB, he looked all over the place.

I don't see the point in another older centre half though. Is Brown an upgrade over Samba, Nelsen or Givet? Perhaps for a million given he can also play right back but that ship has sailed... plus the chances of United letting him go to us rather than to Bruce's Sunderland would have always been minimal.

I think most players who have been fringe players at Man Utd for 5-10 years are a class above your average Premier League club first team player.

It always surpises me when people suggest that O'Shea, Brown, and the like wouldn't improve our team, when it's clear that they will.

Good business by Sunderland.

He's played ONE game, no need to bow down at the altar just yet.

I understand it – because IF we don’t want a left winger anymore (Vereinha) – it would make sense to shift Givet to left back & Olsson back onto the wing. Therefore leaving just Samba/ Hanley & the ageing Nelsen who seems to get slower every year.

Best to be prepared for injuries too. I've said for a week or two now that TWO CD's should be got. One like the Onouha from City as a prospect, and one like Yobo with bags of experience.

Him and Dann got relegated last season as a centre half partnership. One got shipped out to Wolves, the other is languishing in The Championship.

Tells you all you need to know.

Codswallop.

Scott Parker, Matthew Upson, Jonathan Spector, Djemba Ba, Robert Green, Ben Foster...

A good season for Gibson and we've done United a[nother] favour. Hitzlsperger on a 3 year deal and a guaranteed profit if he wants to move on. I'd take a hit on Hitz. All day.

Johnson is a decent player. Decent. £7m worth of player? No.

I think you're still living in a world where over-inflated transfer prices aren't the norm. £7m in this climate of football dealings is quite cheap for a strong CB. Bargain, some might say.

If he was useless do you think Ferguson would have trusted him as cover for over a decade?

Not sure what point you are trying to prove by listing those players? Half of them are slow motion car crashes.

Roger Johnson is a bargain at £7m? Give me a break. No wonder the level of quality in this league is falling season by season.

sorry batman, johnson is a class defender, would take him over nelsen alongside samba anyday.

that's your opinion, and youre entitled to it, and batman is entitled to his!

fact is.. rovers would never have paid 7m for him. so saying we shouldve bought him is a pointless argument... as is the wes brown one.

plan last, as of last week was for a cheap/ cover centre half.. and unless samba is sold another CB wouldnt be bought on top of that. name ive been given is A LONG SHOT.. and wouldnt be available for a few weeks.

givet is expected to be well enough for the villa game.
