Barring one game he's been useless for us. He's a very poor footballer. Have we ever given a testimonial to a player who contributed less?

I'll ignore your Benni McCarthy question on the basis that it makes no sense and is completely irrelevant.

It was relevant because your post suggests you actually believe we have the capability to retain a player worthy of your praise long enough to earn a testimonial.

Good post, except the comparison between a normal person moving jobs for a payrise and a footballer doing the same. It would have an huge impact on my life if I made £1.300 a month and then suddenly was offered £2.000 a month at another place, but does it really matter to someone whether they make £60.000 or £80.000 a week? To me that's pure greed.

Do/did you have to retire at 30-36 years of age?

You can't knock Emerton. Over the years he has put a hell of a lot of effort in for les blues. Can play in most position, he will be an asset for us if not just for his adaptability. Sweet right foot, and in his prime he had a lot of pace. Still looks good technically, and the wealth of experience he brings from international competitions is priceless to our cause. At times a frustrating player, his ball striking and technical ability are known to be excellent yet he sometimes suffered in the less reputable games. He had a tendency to blow hot and cold, but he has always been more solid and consistent than Dunn and Pedersen. I think it's easy to say that he looked a lot better when he had better players surrounding him than a few of our current crop, but that could be said of a lot of players.

I certainly will continue to give him his dues, good servant to the club, and I still fondly remember his debut. Freekick goals such as the one against Villa show his class, and his last minute tap in at Bloomfield road last season will remind me of a time when we had the spirit and tactical nouse to win points at the top level.

A much less stressful time!

We lambast a player who is talented for going to a better club, yet would switch jobs in an instant for a payrise, then demean the efforts of players that are loyal to the club, perhaps deep down knowing that they are representative of our true level, yet they are unwilling to give them credit - it seems that if a player stays with rovers they are ######, but if they are good enough for rovers then inevitably move to a bigger club (what every other 'normal' person would do in their respective job would do) they are a judas.

You seem to be under the delusion that supporting a football team is a rational exercise.

Who retires at that age?!?!?

Footballers and other athletes may end their carreers at that age but they can find other types of work. Like most people do nowadays!!!

Pretty sure they aim not to have to though, may have been the case years ago but premiership footballers probably aren't intending to be plumbers when they hang their boots up

No, though perhaps I expect more intelligence from them than is warranted

Not arguing with that but I just can't feel any pity for people that make that much money and are always complaining that they have a short carreer...

Brett Emerton - absolute dogshit of a player.

He has a good engine, but then again this is probably the minimum expectation of a Premier League footballer. Technically, he is found desperately lacking - he very rarely beats a man, and doesn't have much pace at all - despite playing in a position which usually demands the ability to beat a man and possess a certain degree of pace.

He is ###### in the air, his shooting is nearly always way-off, he doesn't seem to have any influence on the pitch whatsoever, and nearly always chooses the wrong option.

Having said all that, if I were Steve Kean I'd be playing him at right-back instead of Slowgado.

After two paragraphs of dissing him (not saying I disagreed with those paragraphs), you effectively backed me up - he will come in and do his best to play better than a real madrid legend, and probably do better, yet Salgado is a cult figure in spite of his clear discrepancies on the pitch, mainly because we like having a galactico legging people up left right and centre in the name of big name playerness (yes, I made that word up)

Emerton is one of my favourite players - mainly for the fact he never stops running

`

you hit the nail on the head mate. emo never stops running. his engine at 32 years of age is fantastic. we all know that his skill level is rather limited, but i for one except that. it seems, however, that a lot of rovers fans won't.

I have always believed and will always continue to believe that fans will forgive lack of quality, but will not forgive lack of effort. anybody who lambasts emo for lack of effort is seriously deluded and needs their head read!!!

i would much rather be lucky, than good!!

the problem that salgado and rovers have is this: salgado is an attacking fullback which is a good thing, but it leaves him caught out of position time after time. now, that being said, if we had the quality of players in the team to back him up and support their right sided fullback, this salgado slagging would not be an issue. if emo was playing right side of midfield (with the fitness levels that he quite clearly still has), then he would undoubtedly be the perfect foil for salgado and give him the support his fullback, like all wide players should do.

Seriously guys what's with all the...

Football is so full of mercenaries, why turn on the likes of Emo and Peds who have served the club with distinction and dignity for YEARS! Who's next Ryan Nelsen? Save your ire for the wantaways!

Just cause hes been at the club for a number of years doesn't mean we should all bow down and salute him.

In my line of job if your under performing you get no pay rise or bonuses, the boss doesn't say oh well he's been here for 7 years so let's give him a pay rise anyway.

If a player isn't good enough then he isn't good enough Jesus I consider myself a decent athlete so if I run up and down the flank like a headless chicken would you be happy to applaud me?

Cause that's all emerton does, in the 6 or 7 years he's been here I can't remember one game where I thought wow emerton was outstanding today. Hes a nice chap but in this game there's no room for niceties

Can't believe all the grief Emerton has been getting. The lad has been a very useful member of the squad and apart from last year has had no major injuries. Granted he's been frustrating at times - all players are but overall he's been a solid player for us and never in trouble on or off the pitch. Compare what he's offered to the likes of Grella.

People are whinging about the lack of prem experience in the squad and yet your happy to get shut of a player with 8 yrs! He's the type of player we need in the squad - we will miss him if he goes.

If he does go, good luck to the lad and thanks for the service.

Kevin De Bruyne is apparently in the hotel near the training ground. 20 year old Belgium international who plays for racing genk! Can anyone confirm?

Out of our league I wiould have thought, in negotiations with Chelsea a week or so ago.

Emerton is what this club needs now. He has lots of Premier League experience and can play in a number of positions. He gives his all for the team. People saying you can't remember an outstanding game he had, can you name a game he was the worst player on the park?

Time to lay off Emerton me thinks.

Back to transfers in. Need to speed up the process of getting a bid accepted and the player through the door.

Emerton's decent, he gives is all but I agree with the other post, this thread is about people coming in.

I really want us to show some intent and go for Cisse. Get the other players in as well but we would be a good side with the following new players:

Onouha, John, Wilson

Vukcevic, Lansbury or Snodgrass

Ibsevic Cisse

and don't lose Samba or Givet.

All the Andrews-haters seem to be turning their attention towards Emerton now.

Well they need something to whinge about, some people are just never happy unless they are bitching about something. Fear not though, if/when Emo leaves you can be assured there'll find something else to moan about....
