I actually had high hopes for Jonathan Stead after he single-handedly saved us from relegation. Wow, I can't believe I still remember that period of time where he was scoring the solitary goal in a few 1-0 wins to keep us up. That was nearly 8 years ago. (Was it? I can't remember the exact season, but it was after Souness left and Mark Hughes came in)

Unfortunately I was disappointed the next season and he eventually left for...was it Sunderland?

I think playing alongside Andy Cole helped John Stead , more than people realise ..

Ok I can see i'm going to have a busy day,

Now had confirmation that Goodwillie WILL sign for Blackburn in next 48 hours official source,

Also a bid has been lodged for Park Chu-Young and Rover are hoping to tie up both moves ASAP

Hi Glen, do you expect Rovers to sign any more forwards aside from the names above? Just concerned that both look decent players, but not natural goalscorers.

Especaily as Kalinic will be sold, leaving us light up front

Good to see things picking up speed.

I'm a but concerned that we seemed to have abandoned the idea of signing PL players though. One of our strengths was finding the likes of Bentley, Warnock etc and helping them reach their potential with more playing time.

I don't think there has been a PL player's name on the many lists that have appeared.

32 games 12 goals in the league last season for Park Chu-Young. Not a bad return at all for a side that was relegated, though his previous seasons aren't so impressive. However, I'm sure he isn't an out and out striker. I really think we're planning on playing one up top with 3 of of say, Park, Hoillet, Formica, Rochina, Olsson etc. all playing in behind and swapping around. Could cause all sorts of problems.

Rovers have further bids on 2 more players whose names i can't mention yet and enquires in on some already mentioned in this thread, could be a case they do a mass unveiling, saves on petrol :-)

Another striker is not out of the question as the bids and enquires have strikers within them

I think we did exceptionally well with Bentley and Warnock. Two players who we took from their respective club's reserve teams to international football. I dont think we can be expecting many more of them to walk through the door. We took the same sort of gamble with Mame Diouf last season and that didn't really work out. Would really like to have seen us go for Niko Krankjar but I presume Spurs would have priced us out of that unless we involved Samba.

Why should they flop just because they start in the lower leagues? Dunn? Derbyshire? Vinnie Jones? Dj Campbell etc etc. Players being born into premiership teams now?

Dunny made his debut at Anfield in the Premier League.

I am not saying that they are guarnateed to flop, it's just common sense that players bought from lower leagues are going to be technically inferior, otherwise they would have been picked up at an early age by top clubs.

The 3 players you just quoted are not technically great, although Derbyshire was one hell of a finisher

Thanks for the reply

The names you cant mention:), what sort of quality are they? Also would any of them fall into the goalscorer category?

A Marquee player and some good steady additions, we are trying to relight a deal on a Prem Player who we tried to get on loan with view to a permanent move, we went quiet on it after green light, but we may just be back in for him,

He is a midfielder, god knows why we need another with the deadwood we have but an international player

If Rovers had an £18m overdraft and Phil Jones certain fee is £16.5m, the bank will want the other £1.5m before not moving to seize whatever monies they believe they are entitled to.

Hence the need to shift Kalinic and get £1.5m of cash in- I guess the bank will be nervous about accepting just a contract with a Ukrainian club.

This might be a reason for the oddities over Goodwillie and Petrovic.

I think more and more it is looking like the very best net result we can expect on the transfer front this summer is to end up at net -£8m ie £18m overdraft repaid plus £10m injection.

Far more likely that wages and fees will need to be taken into the equation so unless Balaji gets a marquee signing hooked (and frankly that seems very unlikely because he has bungled the previous targets so badly that the only deals available are ones where he gets "taken" big time) then I think we are probably looking at Rovers being around net -£15m or worse on transfer spend by 1 September.

As the situation looks at the moment, that will put us bottom of the PL spending list league table this summer.

An overdraft facility doesn't work that way, it's for working capital requirements and normally renewable annually. There wouldn't be a requirement to pay it down when and if funds became available to do so, that's at the discretion of the account holder surely, unless the terms of the facility implicitly state otherwise.

Are we likely to make more than one Marquee signing Glenn, or do you think they will drop the otehrs if we make one Marquee signing ?

if the petrovic goodwillie and Young go through its gonna cost with signing on fee's agent fee's ect around £17 Million pounds, so cant see 2 marquee players

There live interest if it comes to nothing on the others will not mean they look for an alternative, they still want a defender ect,

So its the ones they are in for or nothing, plus buying the defender they need to buy,

as I said earlier they are looking at potential loans,

But with those 3 on board and a defender to come, it wouldnt be a bad window especially with Formica and Rochina expected to get a chance this season

As so Young is a striker then as well ? didn`t realise that, would be great to get a Marquee signign and a defender as well - yep things are looking better, especially if we can wrap some of the deal sup in the next 3-5 days and integrate them in to the team for the otehr pre-season games - cheers Glen

Yes the terms of the facility explicitly state otherwise. PM me your email address and I will send you the documentation.

The overdraft facility was secured against the Rovers income up to 30 June 2011. When 1 July 2011 came along the security and with it the overdraft facility expired. And the bank was left with £18m of its money having been spent by Rovers.

I cannot think of any circumstances in which an overdraft for 30% of annual income would be given by any bank without security.

You have to remember that this was short term and exceptional- it is the first time since 1987 that Rovers have had an overdraft facility secured against income as opposed to assets.

The Venky's London overdraft was already secured against Rovers' assets so the club had nothing left but income to offer as security.

Well done Glen, all of your information is correct.

Guys things are in full swing RE transfers, there is A LOT of things going on. The best news for me is that people at Ewood Park (2 in particular) are involved in the process. I think the next 10 days are going to be busy.

All good, I believe you, I had noticed that the debt on the overdraft had become 'hardcore' over the past few seasons so that doesn't surprise me. Disappointing considering the apparent assurances by some that the debt was cleared when the takeover was completed. One of many assurances that doesn't seem to have been carried out it seems.
