But why go so far with a prospective player then not offer enough money?

For a player at Dundee United we shouldn't have to break the wage structure for him. Who at the club will not be handling contracts? Surely not Ali Merchant, maybe that guy who came from Leicester (but he isn't Chief Exec, is he?)

Being scrupulously fair, it may be that the player think he's better than he is and we're not prepared to set our already-inflated wage structure out of kilter for him.

The nagging thought in my mind though is that given the way the club's infra-structure has been gutted, and the confused command structure (who's really running the club?) that we are (notwithstanding the capture of Petrovic, pending work permit application) actually incapable of signing any decent players.

Paul Hunt is as good as CEO in all but title, there wont be an appointment above him. Whether that means he is negotiating deals I don't know, there is some concern that holes have been left in that department with the outgoings though.

They were able to agree terms with a player of higher pedigree (Petrovic) and the fact that they got the bid accepted contradicts your statement.

Suprised and dissapointed as well. Will be interesting to find out what caused the deal to collapse so quickly.

Where is it written that the deal has fallen through?? is there a link??

Maybe Goodwillie though, ok premier league, players get paid x amount, I want that too.

I find it hard to believe Rangers or championship clubs will offer much more then what we did.

How strange.

We have to remeber if he is a gamble like Kalinic, then we don';t want to be paying him too much, it also suggests that he probably was a squady.

we certainly didn't have problems agreeing new contracts for Jones, Samba, (was it Olsson too) and others.

Goodwillie certainly not in the class of thoughs players (yet).

@arabtrust1909 - Blackburn deal for #Goodwillie is off for now #P2BAA

"Guys, this does not have ANYTHING to do with Glasgow Rangers. Goodie has stated in private to Houstie that his preference is down south."

"United accepted the bid. Goodie could not agree personal terms. Don't read too much into that. Blackburn could have been offering rubbish personal terms for all we know. This does not have to mean a, b or c. It just means that Goodie is still a United player. Transfer deals are complex & take time & for folk to think that it's because Goodie wants away to Ibrox is absurd. Goodie will go wherever is best for him & his football."

Surprised you didn't mention Dundee Utd old boy Kevin Gallacher! Gally was absolutely awesome for us, so many great memories of brilliant goals against the likes of Man Utd and Arsenal.

Ooh ah gallacher say ooh ah gallacher!

Anyway, I'll be delighted when Rovers confirm the signing, hope it's the first a few

ahhh - Kevin Gallacher yeah, but he went via Coventry but will always be remembered simply for

against Barcelona.

Looks like Goodie doesn't want to go to Blackburn for some reason - you guys can pay way more than Rangers ah'm sure!

Who knows?

We might have offered a derisory wage, or he might be greedy, or whatever.

Given our track record of being unable to sign players, I wouldn't rule anything out.

Meanwhile, the press in Scotland say the hold up is a Dundee United's end.

"Goodwillie was expected to head south over the weekend to sign at Ewood Park but the 22-year-old and his representatives have not yet signed off his time at United. It's understood they are in discussions over contractual matters which have to be resolved with United before he can speak to Blackburn."

If this is true about Rovers not being able to close the deal then I'm afraid I will have lost all faith in Venky's. It will be the last straw.

We were told Pavone didn't sign because it was discovered by the hierarchy he wasn't good enough, and they wanted better.

So we go for a Dundee Utd striker who is seen as a good prospect, and relatively cheap, and we can't sign him.

I repeat... We cannot sign a DUNDEE UTD striker! £16.5m for Jones, £6m for Kalinic, several others off the wage bill and we can't afford a striker from Scotland?!?! What has happened to the club? Under the Trust we would have been able to sign players of this ilk.

Of course, as I said only if this is true. Could be mischief making for all we know. With all that's gone on it's difficult to give Venky's the benefit of the doubt though.

Poor.

If the player is demanding more than 30k a week then Venky's have got this one spot on to pull the plug he isn't worth that. think some people on this message board are just looking for a reason to hate Venky's now.

FC Blackburn supported by your local EDL.

Clearly Nicko doesn't write the headlines for his own articles....let's give the idiot who wrote the headline the benefit if the doubt and just say that maybe he was short of space and the word 'United' couldn't possibly have fitted anywhere. Lazy journalism or just plain old ignorance....

Is the player demanding more than 30k a week? Do you have proof of this?

I think it's more like some people are desperately clawing for reasons to back Venky's now. I have been trying but they aren't making it easy.

I think he was close to signing for a couple of clubs then all of a sudden he was back on the market. Chances are they are just holding out to see how much they can get and taking all the press as good advertising as each bid gets higher.

I doubt Goodwillie even cares where he ends up, money, money, money ;)

And do you have proof that the player doest have unreasonable demands? No of course you dont. The level of hypocrisy by some users is unbelievable.

This is exactly the reason why normal clubs find out what players want before agreeing a fee, call it tapping up or whatever, but everyone does it and for a reason.

We have just wasted valuable time and money on this deal.

P.s. Aguerro has just signed for City on 200k a week, is a player from Scotland asking for a tenth of that, round about correct?

Speedie, 10% would make it £20k not £30k.

Not that we'd go that high even.

If we aren't careful, we are going to get a reputation as tyre kickers. If we haven't already!

As things stand this transfer is not dead but the inexperience of our transfer negotiating team is being very exposed (and that goes for you too Mrs D who by now has no excuse for being so unwise to what it is you are supposed to be running).

Oh boy, we don't even have a reputation as high as being able to kick a tyre!

It was a rough 10%, round about 10% but thanks for the maths lesson :-)

Anyway, we could have found out how much he wanted with one phone call at the start of this.

This surely points to us doing exactly the same on other deals.
