Never seen him play, so does anyone know if he is a target man, or more of a in the hole type? Can anyone compare him to someone who has played for Rovers in the past please?

(Serious question please no daft stuff)

Same here, don't know much about him, other than he is very highly rated in Scotland.

My brother got this from an Inverness Fan:

He does seem to be the real deal. I remember him one on one at Ibrox last season to score the winner and he put it past McGregor (top quality keeper – Arsenal missed the boat not signing him) with ease in the last minute.

I don’t believe he’ll be the guy to get you 25 goals a season because I assume he wont play in the number 9 role? As the number 10 he’ll be the nippy forward with good movement who will chip in with around 10 a season I think unless he is actually played in the number 9 role. He’s very highly rated and would be too good for the Championship, everyone here knew Boyd’s limitations but all speak positively of Goodwillie.

Can't seem to find much about the lad Ozz.

Saw one quote "Best striker in Scotland by far" from a Celtic fan, so who knows.

Oz, I also don't know a great deal about him. Some of the reports were saying he's not super quick but is very strong with an excellent work ethic. Think he works very hard for the team and gets quite a lot if assists as well as goals. His finishing also looks very good and Dundee United fans seem to rate him as one of their best ever players.

Apologies if that doesn't help a lot as im really just going on what I've read.

no no no no no no no!

Not even close, but a good player he is. Not only did he score 19 goals for a team that finished 4th/12, he also had more assists than anyone else in the league. From that you'd guess he is more of a number 10 than a number 9 if that makes sense to you!

The truth is he will be a good player for a Blackburn and hopefully even good enough to be sold on for much bigger money in a couple/few years time, but the SPL ain't so poor that it will collapse without him. United fans are happy enough for him to get his move because we already have a good replacement from our youth set-up.

Had a brief chat with a scout I know at a Championship club. He doesn't really talk much about football when we have a chat but I did ask him about Goodwillie, he said for the money it's a no-brainer, didn't really go into him any more than that though he did say his club asked about his position. He did say that the market is absolutely crazy at the moment and it's tough going getting sensible deals done - he believes we've been very active and as far as he is aware we are serious. I did ask him about what he thinks of our squad and just as what's said on here; a lack of goals will be a big issue and we need to get a goal scorer in ASAP. The only other name he dropped in the conversation was a lad from Reading but big numbers are being quoted - he didn't mention this in relation to Rovers more in response about a question I asked about who he rates.

Obviously not the proven PL goalscorer / bigger name player that would have immediately caught the eye and fans attention, but from what I have read and seen of this player I believe he could be an astute signing.

I would personally much rather see us invest in younger players as a general rule especially with comparatitively low budgets available and at the money paid cannot really see a downside to this purchase. He looks confident, committed and energetic and from the rare goalscoring clips of overhead goals and 30+ yard lobs has some talent and an eye for goal. I wish him well at the club.

Whether he can contribute immediately at this level remains to be seen and I remain hopeful we can recruit a more experienced and proven striker before the season starts. Although I have been away in Asia for the HK tournament I have today read that Samba may be interesting Spurs and that both Defoe and Crouch may be available as part of any deal if it goes through.

Obviously I would be sick to lose a player of Sambas stature and importance, but we definately need to improve our goalscoring ability and centre backs are often easier to replace and locate than strikers.

Although not a major fan of this regime or manager, I do not think this signing should be critised unnecessarily, especially if part of ongoing dealings with possibly a new winger and defensive midfielder also arriving shortly and other strikers under consideration.

I have been as fed up as many with the club over the last few months, but we still have some very good quality players at the club and I am now looking forward to the season starting with a win against Wolves. COYB.

Great this site, I love it:

"Sign some players" "He's not good enough" "Why do we want Raul" "Milito? to old" "Goodwillie, not good enough" "Why haven't we signed anyone" "Striker from the SPL, rubbish" "Sign young up and coming players, but not him" "Venkys have no money, 2m for Goodwillie" "Why don't they spend any cash"

Yadda yadda yadda.

Sign some players- looks like we are FINALLY doing just that.

Raul- yes please

milito- ditto

Goodwillie- who knows

Venky's have no money, £2million on Goodwillie- think you'll find that is the Phil Jones cash.

Get the feeling that would be Shane Long. Rate him but although a goal scorer, he's not a proven top league goal scorer.

How can it be the Phil Jones money i thought that the doom mongers on here were telling us that had all gone to the bank

That's the thing that's really getting me excited about this signing.

He seems to be getting unanimous praise, even from rival fans. I haven't heard a bad word said about him (at least on the field). It's quite rare for this to be the case, no matter what league a player arrives from.

It was also posted that the owners were also trying to get a new credit line fixed up.

I am looking forward to seeing him play - always like players who work extremely hard.

Sounds like he could be in the Speedie/Dickov mould type of player.

I really hope we can get a proven striker in to play alongside him now.

That's him indeed. In no way was he linking him to us just more talking general names who are desirable at Championship level. Reading want big money. Should've asked how he compared him to Goodwillie, next time if I remember!

Which is presumably why my mate who lives in Glasgow told me that Goodwillie comes good at the climax of the game! ;)

I tell you what don't bother.

Last season I saw him in a Scottish Cup replay against my local team Ross County. It was not long after the "rape case" was big news and he got an incredible amount of abuse from our fans everytime he went near the ball. The tie was decided on penalties and he had to take his penalty in front of Ross County fans howling at him. He cooly scored and I remember thinking the guy had got good nerves. He didn't score during the game but I was impressed with his workrate and he did actually look like a player who could make things happen. He looks an aggressive player who hopefully can channel that aggression into scoring goals. I think he could turn out to be a really good buy, considering the crazy money strikers cost these days.

I'm glad we've finally signed someone. I saw this guy a couple of times last year when Dundee were playing Celtic and he always looked good. He's got pace, is tricky and scores goals (in Scotland). Hope that he can do the same for us. He's young, he can develop and we got him at a good price.

agree, roy.

impressed with goodwillie's interview on roversplayer. said he always wanted to come and play in the prem.. and wouldnt have stayed in the spl. described himself as really fit, and a busy player.

you should think about being a football scout.. thats exactly as you described him! :tu:

It always makes me laugh when people say, 'He signed for us, nobody else wanted him therefore he must be crap and we shouldn't have signed him...' or words to that effect. I'll just refer those people to the likes of Alan Shearer, Matt Jansen, Damian Duff, Roque, Bellamy, Big Chris, Braveheart, oh and Ciccio...

(That last one's a joke btw...)

Welcome on board David, I hope it's the best move for you and for Rovers.

Nelsen, tugay, brad, peds (early years)
