Optimistic as we are about to start our 11th consecutive top-flight season. That is our longest streak since the Great Depression. We have cheap tickets, and some good players. Not only that, but if we do bringing in the players as promised by Kean and Venky's, we might well do OK.

this is all venkys fault why people are turning on each other.

Course it is! It's their fault my cat got run over, my dog choked on a bone, the mrs ran off with the postman and the kids are filing for divorce! Darn those pesky brothers!

For all the people pointing out reasons not to be optimistic, the very existence of this thread is proof that there are plenty of reasons to be upset with the situation at Rovers. (there is no "reasons for optimism" thread on Barca or United's boards.) I get that, and I think we all get that. That said there is no reason to fight about weather we should be glass half empty or glass half full fans, I was simply asking what things some of you guys might be looking forward to this season. I am in no way claiming that the good outweighs the bad, I'm just claiming that there is some good. Thanks to those that shared the reasons they are looking forward to the season.

For Barca the only way is down.

I'll answer point by point.

1) This is a thread for those who may well feel optimistic about the coming season( Start your own if you don't, as was previously stated)

2) I have a degree in Ancient History.(Hardly brain dead eh "Doc")

3) I retired from HMF as Company Sergeant Major having seen active service in various locations.( wow! I must be dumb eh?)

4) Having served my time, I then started my own business which allowed me to RETIRE to the Sunny island of Cyprus at the age of 43, where I spend my time diving, kite surfing, playing on my jet ski and ...well you get the picture I'm sure! ( I should be jealous of you because?)

However what any of this has to do with you and the rest of rentamob hijacking the the thread I don't know. But what the hell! You raised it. Oh and by the way as I said before .....Next time you're in Cyprus. Look me up we'll have a beer!

For someone who often gets accused on here of arrogance, I can hand on heart say I've never done anything even close to list a point by point resume of my life's achievements. I'd just find it a little too...too...narcissistic.

All this just from one word in my reply. I've well and truly got you in my pocket.

Still I couldn't think of anything worse than getting to forty three and feeling like I had little else to offer the world. To me holidays are fantastic because they are just that, though I well and truly make the most of them. Each to their own though...

You'd know all about narcissism though wouldn't you..

Why do you think you often get accused of arrogance?I suppose you think that it's totally groundless.

And yet while replying to a post where someone has listed their achievements point by point, you've still managed to come across as the tool.

 I think when I come across people like you on here, it makes me feel better about myself. It's sort of a transient thing really but it sticks around for long enough to come across in my posts.

That a good enough explanation for you?

* = Player was bought for at least £3.5m

So at £4m, I'd say there is a 3 in 5 (60%) chance of getting a successful player, and that is being harsh on Kalinic who has never been played in a system which suits him but anyways.

For players less than four mil' well I won't count Formica/Rochina as it's too early to tell but I counted 18-20 of the rest being good signings in the sense they improved the squad and did well for Rovers in their time here with the rest being awful at worst and a squad filler at best. So that's less than a 1 in 3 chance of buying a successful player for less than £4m (28-31%).

If you asked what the difference was between spending £3.5m on a player and less the gap between the chances widens even further. This is of course quite subjective but you have to go a long way to argue that on average spending less on players is more, or just as, likely to yield positive results.

I admire the research! Very rarely you get people who put the effort in here (me included) so impressed by that.

You did miss Ferguson off the 4m+ list (I think he cost 6m?) who was had a couple of good games but was in the majority injured then wanted to go home. Also Grella was 4m quid so I think he should be up there.

In balancing it out the guys who came on free/or up to 500k I think it is harsh to criticise unless they were on massive wages. They were cheap gambles with little impact on the club. So of the guys who cost 0.5m to 4m who were not worth the cash?

Fowler (for the wages), and Andrews. Um, actually I'm struggling to identify anyone else who seemed that much of a waste of money - are there people missing from your list as even I thought we had more garbage out of the budget rack than that ... Linganzi if he goes maybe (very cheap though....), Matteo was hit and miss.

All our outstanding players came in for less than 4m, and I don't buy this "law of averages" malarky. We got them because we did our research and got in hungry talented players with points to prove.

Sorry jbn but you have just massively depressed me.

Precisely, we did thorough research.

This summer we are now on our THIRD completely different approach to transfers this summer and the scouting network is totally ignored and marginalised.

Every time I think that Venky's have recognised and finally learnt from their mistakes, it just gets worse. Leaving Kean in position and Balaji alone with the senior players has been a suicide note for Venky's ownership of Rovers. Unfortunately, this will be a suicide that extends painfully across the 2011/12 season.

Balaji has not kept a single promise yet in relation to Rovers so why should he breal a habit in talking to the players?

Owners directly telling porkies to players is the single most rapid way to destroy dressing room morale.
