[Archived] Allardyce on Kean and Venky's

Recommended Posts

Are you telling me his style isn't unpopular? It doesn't matter what a few pundits say, Sam's style of football is largely frowned upon by the footballing world. There has to be some reason a big club hasn't hired Sam, if he's as great as you (and the man himself) claim him to be.

Again, I responded by what I had heard and seen on television with comments from Savage, Lawrenson and Crooks!!

Thought I had made that clear!!

Here it is again

There's a simple yardstick here .... any manager worth his salt would comfortably win The Championship with West Ham's squad. Will Sam? I'm not convinced.

Nothing is easy in life, I think they have a good chance but as an outsider think it will be an ultra competitive battle this year. Plenty of managers with points to prove within that league.

Well, now here was another point discussed with Claridge and Holland, they stated Leicester and West Ham need to go up this year, they have really good squads but the Championship this year is going to be one of the toughest yet, Ipswich have spent really well as have a few other clubs, Cardiff if Bellers goes back will have a chance, Brighton could be a dark horse as they have paid for and built a new stadium and have money to buy players, Burnley were mentioned as were Blackpool and Reading if they can keep hold of Long & Co, Notts Forest were another in the mix as McLaren needs to push on from last year! Indeed in terms of squad and money spent, Leicester are by far the biggest spenders and Sven needs to get promotion also, so its tighter than ever this year.

Surely a good manager designs a set-up that will last, creates a framework for future success, gets players that have some longevity etc

Allardyce, by his own admission, has left clubs that have shortly afterwards been relegated or nearly relegated.

So, yes he might be a good leader, good at self promo etc, but can he really be called a good manager?

He got out maneauvred by Kean and his allies - tough and stop bitching about it, things like that have in football for years. I see he timed it on the one week of the year he will get exposure, yes when the CHAMPIONSHIP kicks off and the Premier League hasn't.

Of course he can, he gets results.

Plus he helped develop some of those young players which are coming through at the minute (Olsson, Junior, Jones etc).

Still, at any club, pretty difficult to leave an amazing legacy when you have to continually sell your best players.

Don't want to read the rest of this thread for fear the ungrateful Sam knockers will infuriate me. So instead will stick to the facts:

Sam kept us up.

Sam made us sell-able (so any pro-Venkys people should be grateful).

Sam got us into the top half while the Walker Trust were bleeding us dry in terms of transfer budget.

Sam got us to a semi-final while repeat the above.

Sam did nothing whatsoever to justify him being sacked.

Good luck to the guy, he will always rank alongside Hughes and Souness as modern legends to me.

A modern legend? Wow you really must have low standards to mention the word legend alongside Sam. You want a modern legend look no further than King Kenny.

When we finished 10th and matched most of the big clubs at home, that was pretty decent. The pride was back at Rovers and other clubs knew about it. Will never forget that feeling and will always be very grateful.

Sorry for me the pride wasnt back. We rolled over away and 7-1 is a proof of that. IF he was such an excellent manager we would try and gain some results away too.

I partly agree. However, given the resources available to Sam, he consistently played to his and the teams strengths and took every advantage of 'playing the percentages' on and off the field.

No-one can deny that it worked.

Sam did what was neccessary with limited resources to ensure Premier League football at Ewood Park. Yes we lost games away from home when he fielded weakened sides. But the following week a full strength side would normally win a vital home game.

I thought Sam was a terrific manager for this club but he has now gone and it's time to draw a line under discussions about his various good/bad points. The fact is that we have Kean as manager and whilst I can never feel supportive of him, simply because I don't think he'll bring success to the club, it's time to support the team as we start a new and what I suspect might well be a very difficult season.

Another very fair post PB.

Hmm I dont recall him fielding weakened sides on purpose against the big boys. He still played the best eleven possible and still got spanked.

That may be so, but fans have the right to expect the side so show an iota of interest and motivation rather than not bother at all. They are getting paid to play, after all, they could at least have made some attempt to do so.

Most definitely but in his role as manager shouldnt Sam have been more pro-active in motivating them for the bigger games? Obviously the players are at fault as well but its too much of a coincedence that we lay down for so many of our games against the big boys.

Legends is overstating the case; all three were very good managers for Rovers and nothing more. The difference is while Hughes jumped ship when the money ran out and Souness jumped ship before he was sacked the tenure of both had run its course. Sam however left the club prematurely and never had the chance to take the club farther after the firefighting of his first 18 months in charge.

I would be very surprised if Sam doesn't get West Ham promoted at the first attempt, and I hope 12 months from now we aren't in the Championship and Sam is back in the top flight and the debate is still raging about why he should never have been sacked in the first place.

Did he mention wanting to leave last summer?

Yes he did.

Souey got us promoted and won us a trophy.

Hughes built a team which we are still reaping the benefits from today (As Sam did when he sold RSC and Warnock).

Can you remember Hughes or Souey telling the press "I created such a vibrant football club that there were four or five who wanted to buy it, having never shown any interest before. I was producing profit with results." In effect demeaning the work done by the previous managers for his own glory? I'll be honest I'm getting sick of it now.

Did he mention wanting to leave last summer?

Sam? Yes.

He certainly came out with comments that indicated he was open to a move elsewhere. There was talk about how he could manage a huge team like Real Madrid and do a good job, then there was comments about how he would love to manage an international team and finally there was a team in Dubai? That he was heavily linked to.

I can't mourn the loss of Sam because I wanted him out, but I wasn't expecting or wanting Steve Kean to be appointed.

.

We were heading for relegation under Souness and he was heading for the sack before he jumped ship to Newcastle. Hughes lost interest when the Trust did not back him in the transfer market. The point is, both managers could not take the club any farther and their time was up - Sam was never given the chance to do so.
