ABBEY Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 If the V's are keeping the donut as it appears they are, wouldn't it be worth getting mr H on board as a defenders coach ? It seems no time is spent on thd defensive side? Was a chat we had at ewood last night.

Eddie Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Is there any evidence to support the idea that Hendry is a good defensive coach? He was hardly successful as a manager. Good players don't always make good coaches...

Eddie Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 His failure as a manager is hardly encouraging. Different skills, but had he been brilliant at organising defenses then he would have done better. Should we try and hire Pele then? Potentially the best attacking coach ever. Let's get back in touch with Maradona. Why not? Got to be worth a punt.

I do take your point Eddie, however the ability to still play the game is not a pre-requisite of a coaching role and I think it would be a mistake to dismiss out of hand "old pros". I think you have to judge on an individual basis, after all if we don't give people the opportunity we'll never know will we.
Ripleys love child Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Anyway I would love to see him involved in some capacity but wether hed be a good coach it's hard to say until you actually give him a chance. Best defender in the world in his prime bar none IMO and one of my all-time heroes
forumquizmaster Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Hendry was a brave warrior and an Ewood legend, but not technically the best defender we've ever had. He had to rely too often on his bravery. I'm not sure you can coach what he had, to be honest.
slough_rover Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 He'd probably gamble away his earnings anyway.
broadsword Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 He'd probably gamble away his earnings anyway. No need for that. I wouldn't wish what Colin's been through on anyone. There's no guarantee Hendry would be a decent coach. We can only hope that we develop the coaching staff further.

Strange one this, I have a mate who captained Clyde reserves when Colin managed there, he was 19 and they won the reserve cup, Colin had to give up the position due to Denises' illness aqnd a new manager came in and ditched all the young lads. From what I gather he was an excellent manager for the young lads and looked after them really well!

Amo Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Just don't think these 'specialist' coaches work. How many other clubs have them? I think Les Ferdinand works as a strikers coach at Spurs, but that's all I can think of. Like someone else said, you can't teach what Hendry had. Sure, he might be able to pass on a few pointers but that doesn't make him a coach. Did Jones or Hanley need a Colin Hendry to rise through the ranks?

I have always believed that one of the most important jobs at a football club is that of a players welfare manager, unlike in my day, we have players throughout the club, young lads away from their surroundings, family and cultures. As a father, ex player and the life experiences Colin has endured, he could be an excellent father figure for both Academy and foreign players at our club, helping them adjust, settle more quickly and feel as though they are part of the Family of Rovers.

I think that is an excellent idea. Whether Colin would be the best candidate for the role is another matter.... From what I gather he was an excellent manager for the young lads and looked after them really well! He is very highly thought of at Broadwood. To be fair he's very highly thought of in Scotland as a whole, though not necessarily for his coaching abilities.

Every manager/coach worth his salt should be setting his team up to defend as a whole, from the front, and not just as the back four alone, surely.
Kelbo Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Every manager/coach worth his salt should be setting his team up to defend as a whole, from the front, and not just as the back four alone, surely. Exactly correct, the concept of the front men closing down quickly allows the midfield to regroup when posession has changed, the back four play the ball accross the back whilst their opponents (Not Rovers at the moment) get their shape back, thats why the counter attacking game is so much more difficult to cope with, especially with quick wingers and a nippy striker and illustrates why in the Premier leeague, with the squad we have, we shouldnt be playing a diamond formation!
JAL Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 The best example of a team that defends from the front today has to be............... BARCELONA !
Kelbo Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 The best example of a team that defends from the front today has to be............... BARCELONA ! The greatest example of any team today is Barcelona, each player has quality but its their work ethic, despite them being superstars (to coin a phrase) they press the ball high up the pitch and get bodies behind the ball very quickly when defending, now when they get the ball, just amazing, they pass the ball so well in the tightest of situations yet know when and where to foul, that side has everything, probably the best all round team I have ever seen bar none!! Surprisingly, not a very big side either!
