Hekla Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Bad signing my ass, just the finisher we need. Class.
RibbleValleyRover Posted September 17, 2011 Author Posted September 17, 2011 A few more performances like that and I will have to get the humble pie out in regards to Yakubu.
Emge Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 I got to admit. I was wrong about him and Im delighted that I was. Lets hope he keeps Roberts far far away!
SIMON GARNERS 194 Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 What superb intelligent play for his first goal, not seen the like of it for quite a while at Ewood!
Backroom DE. Posted September 17, 2011 Backroom Posted September 17, 2011 Think we might have nicked a gem from Everton here... will reserve judgement at this point, but he was excellent today. The best thing about Yakubu is that he makes Roberts an irrelevence
LeChuck Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 What superb intelligent play for his first goal, not seen the like of it for quite a while at Ewood! I don't think we've seen a touch of class up front like that since Roque's first spell. The timing of the run, the awareness of the goalkeepers position, and the technique and presence of mind to put it in the corner. Brilliant stuff. He looked really hungry as well, especially in the first half. He was flagging from 70 minutes onwards, I imagine Kean's plan would have been to replace him but for the injuries (again). Even so his experience near the end was invaluable; when those behind him were suffering from a rush of blood, he was a calming influence and really took the sting out of the game at times with clever play. Considering that's his first game of the season and his first Premier League game since 2010, we couldn't ask for anything more. If we can create chances he will score goals. I hope people will see how wide of the mark comparisons to Roberts were, they're chalk and cheese. Yakubu is class with questionable fitness, Roberts is as fit as a fiddle but a donkey in front of goal. Edit: There were encouraging signs for his link up play too. There were a few times where he held the ball and played clever passes through the midfielders as they burst past him. That's the sort of play we need with the attacking midfielders we have.
chris Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 I am almost scared we wil not see him play like that again, I've been told he fades away. but fingers crossed because what a class class goal. Guess its best not to get too excited but thank god Kean dropped Roberts completely. Roberts seems happy just to get on the radio.
chaddyrovers Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Really good start from Yakubu. please just do this for the rest of the season. Good finish and movement for 1st goal.
koi Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Played very well but I still fear we'll see the real Yak in 10 or so games.
Steve Kean's Hypnotoad Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 First goal was absolute class. Scores 2 on his debut and some on this thread are just waiting for him to fail. Sad.
Tim Southampton Rover Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Played very well but I still fear we'll see the real Yak in 10 or so games. Let's judge him on what we see on the pitch for Rovers. He's scored 2 goals, cracking debut. Let's hope there's lots more to come.
Stuart Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Did well today. A brace of your debut, against Arsenal, is setting the bar pretty high and I don't expect him to do that every week but well done, Yak. In a way, he's just like Roberts in his style of play, except he can head, has a good first touch, can hold the ball, pick a pass, and score goals. Yeah, just like Roberts...
Blue n White Rover Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Not only his 2 goals that impressed me today, the pass to Ollsson to set up our 4th goal was also perfectly weighted. Breath of fresh air knowing you have a striker that will finish off chances. Feed him!
LeChuck Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Played very well but I still fear we'll see the real Yak in 10 or so games. 11 in 20 last season, a record of roughly 1 every 3 games in the Premier League before that...not sure what you mean about 'the real Yak'. We've profited from his falling out with Moyes. His quality shouldn't be in question as he's proven over such a long period of time, it's keeping him fit that's the challenge. Seemed fine at Leicester last season though, and looked powerful and quite fast today.
Mattyblue Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 First time since Santa Cruz mk1 that we have had a dangerous looking striker. Cheap, last minute, but it could save Kean's bacon...
Exiled_Rover Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 I am almost scared we wil not see him play like that again, I've been told he fades away. but fingers crossed because what a class class goal. Guess its best not to get too excited but thank god Kean dropped Roberts completely. Roberts seems happy just to get on the radio. As long as he keeps it up till January, he can fade away all he wants.
The Rover of Finland Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 His first was brilliant and honestly Roberts wouldn´t have scored. His second seemed to be offside but who cares. It was just about being there but would Roberts have been there? Yakubu is a striker who can score goals. Not world class but definitely improvement for us.
T4E Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 He will get chances playing in front of Rochina, Formica, Vukcevic and Hoillet, and most of the time you'd back him to finish them. Gary Neville made an excellent point about the Yak - his natural fitness (or lack of) means he has to be playing all of the time. It remains to be seen whether this becomes a help or a hindrance. Speaking of which, how unfit do you have to be to fail a late fitness test and be replaced by Yakubu?!

Seggie Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 First goal was absolute class. Scores 2 on his debut and some on this thread are just waiting for him to fail. Sad. I actually thought the Yakubu siigning was better than what people made out, he IS a goalscorer if the chances are created for him and as long as he has the fitness to get there first he will score goals, he'll probably get at least 10 this year.
Backroom Tom Posted September 17, 2011 Backroom Posted September 17, 2011 Not only his 2 goals that impressed me today, the pass to Ollsson to set up our 4th goal was also perfectly weighted. Breath of fresh air knowing you have a striker that will finish off chances. Feed him! Not only that but look at his position for the 4th, he was perfectly placed fot the pull back had it come to him from Olsson. That first is true class though, theres one angle that shows he didn't even need to look up he just knew where the goal was and what to do in a flash. He will have games where he does nothing no doubt but showed enough to say he will be a good signing for the money. As a comparision was it £10m for Crouch? Come on Glenn get on it:
roverandout Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 was impressed with him but boy does he look a big chap, think he needs to cut out the pork pies. one guy commented behind me that the difference between him and roberts is that this guy takes up great positions, doesnt do alot but knows where the goal is and roberts runs around like a headless chicken, he said how easy yakubu makes it look compared to arse-kisser.
