[Archived] AVG 2012 (paid version)

Recommended Posts

We've used paid AVG for several years, I think it is called Internet Security Package, for home and work. Simple to install and set up and appears to catch everything - we haven't had any issue in years. Mind you once I managed to stop the kids swapping files via MSN that made a huge difference.

AVG can be heavy on resources so we just leave the office system to update and run at 3.00am each day. I run full scans weekly at home at night.

I don't get why people use paid anti virus nowadays when MSE is free and works perfectly. Microsoft have really done well with it. Never had any problems with it.

There really is no need to pay for anti virus software unless you ever intend on getting support from the company that makes it.

Unfortunately it's one of those things that companies slap a price tag on to lure people into thinking they're getting a better product because it costs more. HDMI cables are another terrible example of this.

Businesses should use paid anti virus because they might need the technical support, but for a home user it's pointless really.

Good to hear AVG have improved, but amazing that people pay for this software! We used AVG (free) for a time, it drained resources and slowed everyting down terribly.

4 years ago someone told me about Avast, now run that on all our laptops and is simply fantastic. No drain on system, not one problem in 4 years. Is the best.

Exactly and one little benefit of the AVG package is it comes with a couple of spare user licences which can be used at home.

Well in our case it's two things:

I've never managed to make any of the "built-in" MSE stuff work satisfactorily. The MS fax software is awful, the backup routine rarely if ever works and soni wouldn't trust the AV feature. It's probably my fault but it's my experience. Therefore I prefer to pay for software which works.

Having experienced a couple of quite severe virus attacks - both as s result of my kids swapping files via MSN - the small amount of money for AVG business user licence is nothing compared to the hassle of an attack of some sort.

Tried others such as Norton and MacAfee but found them very invasive and heavy on resources.

Precisely Paul,

When you have accounting software that your business relies on, you need something that's going to stop most things.

There's nothing like trying to recreate transactions following a major crash/ hack attack.

That's the time you realise that good AV is worth it.

For the general home user, paid av is useless. AVG sucks in my opinion (once had the paid version, slowed my internet so much it would of been faster using the 56k modem and phone socket)

Antivir (enjoy the uodates with luke filewalker) or Avast are my choices with spybot s&d running alongside

A strange one this because I would say exactly the same about Norton and MacAfee - utterly useless in my view - yet I've never had a problem with AVG and the other two appear to be very successful for others.

I wouldn't trust AV software from Microsoft. It's there fault that it is needed in the first place. I've worked with computers since leaving school and in all that time have always used and recommended AVG.

Never had any problems with it.

I have also worked in computers all my life and can't recommend MS Security Essentials enough.

I've had no problems with it.

Personally I would never pay for virus software. It strikes me that people purchase because they think they have to, like expensive HDMI cables!

Pretty sure Microsoft didn't make that program as well, they bought it from a specialist company that did.

Nice analogy with the HDMI cables by the way. Pretty disgusting how companies played on the thinking of the old analogue equipment to rip people off, and how the likes of Curry's used to push the more expensive ones to make more money.

It's weird how effective over-pricing something can be in making it sell; "this one costs more so it must be better!!!".

I don't know if it's strictly true but whenever I've ended up getting a free copy of McAffe or Norton I have always ended up removing it.

I used to have AVG free which I think I would recommend the most out of the non MS versions (I know people have strong views). There are also plenty of reviews of the ms product online that confirm that it's good.

I told a colleague about the HDMi scam and he still went out and bought a £40 cable. The power of a curry's salesman!

I just can't trust anything from Microsoft really. AVG Free is fine in my experience.

To be fair, you shouldn't be giving that sort of advice when it's obviously based on bias and not really any technical knowledge.

Microsoft bought Sybari - a specialist security company - and obtained the program that way, so the point is void anyway.

I tend to avoid MS software where possible (I used Firefox and OpenOffice for years before they became popular), but in this instance Security Essentials is an excellent piece of free software. AVG seems consistently popular but never ranks too highly when reviews and performance tests are done.

Why should advice not be given out on bias? Ultimately people on advise on things they think are right.

I've used AVG with out issue for the last eight years. And I just can't bring myself to suggest their product. Especially as it's something I would not use myself. I would never recommend a product to a customer that I would not use.
