Head up by the Uni around Herdman St then get a cab; cheap as owt. Check out the Philharmonic pub, absolutely fantastic.

Baltic Fleet pub over the road opposite the Albert Dock.

Lago on corner of Seel St is cheap, but not that close to the O2. You're best bet for cheap ale are the pubs on London Road which is right by the O2 Academy.
