[Archived] Protest Round Up

Recommended Posts

Comes from a chant at Old Firm games, pretty sick.

From Urban Dictionary:

In the early 1970s, young boys were abused by a youth coach at the club called James Torbett. Jock Stein aka Big Jock is reputed to have known about this and not reported the matter to the authorities, and also been part of a cover up within Celtic Football Club.

Urban Dictionary is not strictly correct on this. Celtic Boys Club was not directly linked to the Celtic Football Club. However Torbett was an odious individual who also employed young lads in his business, which did have many links to both the Old Firm Clubs (they made and sold corporate gifts and club merchandise). I would be amazed if 'Big Jock Knew'. Coincidentally Steve Kean played for the Celtic Boys Club under Jim Torbett.

I was watching tv last night and the EDL was on.

Which reminded me a lot of the protesters of Ewood.

Ie. There's a few clued up "leaders" who know their stats/figures etc.

But then there's the "followers" who just give it a "Yeah!!" and agree with everything which is said without thinking about it or contributing much to the debate.

They also generally appear to look the same as well. Angry, shaven headed, stone island wearing; chavy bast##ds.

That's the main reason I personally feel embarrassed about the whole protest situation.

Feel free to -1 me

I'm sorry but to liken protesters to the EDL is a disgrace.

The EDL are a racist organisation who cause trouble wherever they. Whose sole aim is to spend their 'demos' getting tanked up on drink and drugs whilst being foul and abusive to any one is Muslim. In the process costing local councils thousands upon thousands of pounds, also they force small businesses to close for the day causing them loss of revenue on traditionally their busiest days.

The protesters are nothing like that really.

I've been to every protest so far and not wearing anything made by Stone Island, or with a shaven head. Most people are able to see that things aren't going well and we are in the bottom three of the league and been there most of the season. They can see for themselves that we are shipping far too many goals. These people aren't followers. They just realise that a change of management is needed. And are not being apathetic towards our situation by doing something about it.

Since when is having a ST for Rovers some kind of badge of honour? At those prices you arent exactly making a statement.

Glen will probably be paying around £400 for his tickets this season instead of my £225!

Join the 100 Club and REALLY financially contribute if you want.

When I got my season ticket I didn't have a mortgage and I wasn't married. Next season if I can afford it and it's not infringing on my responsibilities I will get one, if not I won't. £225 is still a lot to pay out when you have lots of bills coming out of the bank every month. Paying the bills and not going hungry is much more important.

It certainly isn't a badge of honour, it's a luxury if you can afford not to have to stand queuing for tickets every other week. Be thankful if you've got one, don't use it to lord it up over people as that caller did on Radio Lancs with Glen.

That will always happen though in a debate people will try and weaken the position of the opponent, as you know similar has been done to Roversmum with questioning her background.

Not by your own doing but you have been painted as some sort of superfan and it may have lead to questions as to if one was so commited to an extent they would be willing to sell your car to travel to India then why would you not hold a season ticket etc etc.

I suppose it just goes with the territory of being high profile at present, a few people questioned why I should go to Pune as I don't attend many away games, people will pick where they see holes.

Yes I guess your right mate, Been getting asked the question quite alot in last few days, I'm certainky have no wish to be high profile, i'm just an organiser and i'm very grateful that Simon has shared the load in recent weeks.

I did prefer the days of giving transfer news and writing my blog, I like every other fan wishes there was NO protest and no need for them, because in truth it should never have ever come to this. The club has had every opportunity to get these issue's dealt with away from the public eye. All we want as supporters, is to once again feel that supporters matter

If he's sacked maybe you can have a break from it all finally ha, havn't you been on it non stop since the end of the transfer window first with that then this?

Bet your wife if praying for his removal

True that!

I think the 'accusation' was probably more along the lines of, if he hasn't a ST then maybe he isn't attending.

Out of interest I would love to know at what point it would have cost you the equivalent of the ST price, can't be too far off now.

Suppose we can expect a huge rise in ST prices next season at this rate.

Back on topic proper, Glen / Simon has anything further been dicussed? ie next steps / meetings with club / fans meetings etc etc

Must be getting up there now, as Arsenal , City and Chelsea where all £35 a ticket, think the spurs one was £32 and I can't remember further back, Plus my wife attended a few of these too.

Yes my wife is quickly beginning to hate football, even though she is a Rovers fan and goes to quite a lot of the games. Transfer window was stressful, but protest even more so,

Hopefully soon, we can all get back to enjoying going to rovers, and think about good things

We are in a society now were we are trying to get away from this "Judging a book by its cover" . People having short hair and wearing branded clothes has got nothing to do with them protesting and I take personal offence that you should insult people who have been protesting because of how they dress and their personal appearance.

We are going to football matches not down a catwalk.

The protests have always been peaceful, and I will move this one step further to add, its not the protestors who have been issuing threats of violence to both the protestors and their children.

This is whats so wrong with modern society, people being branded as thugs because of how they chose to dress.

Many of the people involved in these peaceful protests have high profile jobs, and qualifications which are up there with the best of them. I myself have short hair and a stripe in my hair but it didnt stop me leaving school with 9 a-c's, pick up my city and guilds in Welding Fabrication and then go onto get a business Management Degree.

Stero-typing is one thing i seriously detest

But sadly we're not there yet.

I'd like to add I'm not trying to insult anyone in anyway.

But If people take a step back and look at the bigger picture, the media/other people will see the protest on the telly/newspapers an see the majority of the protesters being young and giving it the big 'un.

They might be the most well mannered people on earth, but as it appears they look like the cast of Green street. That's how the protests look and will be perceived to outsiders.

THATS the reason; to me; it's embarrassing, not from my own predjustices but from the way Rovers fans are perceived.

I understand why you are protesting, not that I agree with it. And I have a lot of respect for you Glenn, managing, organising and stickin with the protests every game. You also come across well mannered/articulate in your interviews. But you have to realise people WILL judge the protesters by the way the majority of them look. It's the way the world works sadly.

Suggestion.

All dress in black to represent the "death of our club"

Come off it arran, most people don't think that way at all, non Rovers fans may think they are daft, wasting their time, being a meanie to Stevie Kean, 'but something off Green Street/an EDL rally' is your own outdated sterotyping coming through.

I'd like to see your reaction if someone wrote on ICBINF about 'typical Muslims all dressed in their skullcaps etc'.

I guess a lot of the questions are as a result of how your stock has risen Glen. You are appearing in the press and I suppose people just want to know a bit more about you and your background. Think it's just the nosey neighbour syndrome.

Although I must admit I was suprised our paths had never crossed before as I know the majority of peeps either by sight or to say hello to after trapsing to all sorts of random countries over the years when we actually COULD think about Europe.

I guess when you said about selling your car to get to Pune it just flagged up the lengths that you'd go to, just kind of assumed I'd have shared a beer with you at some crappy airport in the middle of nowhere.

Perhaps our paths have cross unknowingly which is more than likely as I tend to keep myself to myself, I know many years ago I used to go on Rovers with quite a large group (Those were the days i'd get a clip around the ear off my mum and dad as they used to get me seriously drunk) , one of which now runs the Brown Cow (Wayne) but now I go with my eldest brother, as once wives and kids come on the scene you don't tend to spend as many hours in the pub before of after games.

He write this in the paper.

Here’s my idea of how to handle the Swansea game, assuming Steve Kean is still in the hotseat:

Arrive at the ground with a smile on your face

Walk, don’t march.

Stand for 90 minutes singing positive songs

Support the team

Applaud where appropriate

Here’s the big one. Don’t boo

Let’s see what effect that has.

The club was made a laughing stock the moment Venkys sacked Sam and appointed a coach with no managerial experience at all

You mean Clough's LT blog.

Actually, thought that Cryer's Monday match reports were pretty fair but disagree with Clough's blog

The telling line from that Clough article was: Kean is probably here to stay, no matter what. We just have to get over it.

Why should any football club have to keep a manager on? Surely if they are not performing the logical thing to do is to replace them with someone more competent – relegation could spell disaster for us so “we just have to get over it” – what a truly stupid comment.

So fans should just accept it when someone, at this moment in time, is clearly not up to the job – a very poor article which comes across as quite bitter or he could be part of the Kentaro payroll….

I am not shaven headed, nor a do I wear Stone Island. I will happily debate the current situation with you Arran and unlike you I will debate without the need to result to insults and stereotypes.

You are right about one thing though. I am very angry at what has happened to our club!

Ready when you are.
