Guest Rovers4Good Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 This is a thread about the goalkeeper. No **** Sherlock He's a top keeper and would ratherhave him in the team than Bunn and most other goalies in the premiership. Yeh if he makes a howler then it's down to him but as for conceding week in week out then you got to look at the full unit and let's just say that not having a strong back line for the majority of the season won't help and with the fact that our midfielders rarely track back then i'd say the Robbo's done a bloody good job to keep the number down to 200 as without him i'm sure it'll have been more.

DeadlyDirk Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Needs to be a big player for us now if we are to have any chance of staying up, no doubt will now have to carry the burden of being captain as well due to Samba throwing his toys out of the pram.
Guest Rovers4Good Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Wouldn't say he's thrown his toys out of the pram more the guy is making a stance to the way our club is being run like a pub team (no dis-respect to pub teams as most will be run better than Rovers) and the broken promises made to him before he signed his contract

If he genuinely wanted to make a stance - he could speak out against the owners, back the protests - and then play his heart out for the club on Saturday. Instead of appearing to feign injury and then put in a transfer request.

DavidMailsTightPerm Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Difficult for a player to back the protests ...He would only be transfer listed and sold ... Then it would be mission accomplished for him - as he wants to go anyway ?
martypellowe Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Difficult for a player to back the protests ...He would only be transfer listed and sold ... If that's what he wants, he should back the protests
Seggie Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 If that's what he wants, he should back the protests and lose 2 weeks wages. I suspect he may speak after the inevatble though.
Miker Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Interesting blog assessing Robinson's chief weakness
Exiled in Toronto Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I'm shocked to see at this stage of the season his save % is hovering around 50%; the next worst is in the 60's
grizfoot Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I'm shocked to see at this stage of the season his save % is hovering around 50%; the next worst is in the 60's Can be a bit misleading though, all the Arsenal tap-ins from close range that he had no chance of saving for example will go against him as will any deflected shots/own goals.
Exiled in Toronto Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Can be a bit misleading though, all the Arsenal tap-ins from close range that he had no chance of saving for example will go against him as will any deflected shots/own goals. We're 2/3rds of the way through the season tho and every team has conceded tap ins and deflected shots. The fact is his stats are the worst by a country mile. I saw somewhere else we are nowhere near being the worst for allowing chances in the box; he's letting in the most from distance and only stopping half of what comes his way. Not saying he is to blame for our predicament, but if he had an average save % that's probably 10 goals less and we have thrown away points in a lot of close games. Personally I was disappointed Bunn was dropped. Robbo would never have even moved for that Liverpool chance right at the end nor come for any of the crosses Bunn collected at OT.
LeChuck Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 And Bunn wouldn't have pulled off the miraculous save against Fulham that Robinson did shortly after we went down to 10 men, which set us on our way to a vital 3 points. Swings and roundabouts really. I still feel much more comfortable with Robinson in goal than I do Bunn. Robbo could do absolutely nothing about the 2 goals against QPR, the 7 against Arsenal or the 2 against Newcastle.
Exiled in Toronto Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I hope you are right. If he lets in 50% of the shots and a few long distance trundlers in the remaining games we'll be down for sure.
Elvis McSmithy Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 personlly think robinson is our worst 1st team keeper we have had in the prem, if he wasnt so high profile hed have been dropped a long time ago im sure, im not into stats just what ive seen with my eyes, he inspieres zero confidance and never no matter how well were playing does he look like keeping a clean sheat, hes just a short range shotstopper, the football leagues are full of them getting paid a fraction of what robinson recieves and the way he always punches or parries the ball 9 out of 10 times instead of simply catching it really boils my nuts. and im not blinded by how great friedle was, before brad we had Filan, Flowers and Kelly, which where all better allaround keepers than robinson.
Amo Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 and im not blinded by how great friedle was, before brad we had Filan, Flowers and Kelly, which where all better allaround keepers than robinson. Filan was grossly underrated. Always thought he was a solid keeper.
blue_n_white99 Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Any goalkeepers stats would be abysmal behind our defence, if you put Van Der Saar, Cech and Reina in goal behind Desperate Dann and Co we would still leak goals. I have always been happy with Robbo as Big Brad's replacement and he always gives the impression that he actually gives a toss, although that may just be a goalie idiosyncrasy, since most are a touch tapped.
BuckyRover Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Filan was grossly underrated. Always thought he was a solid keeper. I remember being annoyed when we bought Friedel. "Why the hell do we need an American keeper? We've got Filan?!" Hindsight eh?

I'd agree with all of that. Our organisation and defending on the main part this season have been horrific and as such, pretty much any GK would have struggled. Robbo is a fantastic GK though and second only to Brad in our Premiership years, in my opinion.
Elvis McSmithy Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Robbo is a fantastic GK though and second only to Brad in our Premiership years, in my opinion. No chance mate, robinson better than flowers, give over.
Miker Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Personally, I thought Bunn was a lot more imrpessive this season in the few games he played. I can hardly remember any amazing saves Robinson made this season, yet I can think of plenty by keepers from other teams. Then again, I think all our experienced players have been hugely disappointing this season. We've had to rely on Hanley, Lowe, N'zonzi, Hoilett, Henley etc. to get us out of trouble. Pedersen, Givet and Yakubu are probably the only older players that have done well this season, and Givet only after being moved into the centre.
rog of the rovers Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Interesting debate. As said I think he's definitely suspect from range, although his instinctive saves more than make up for this. As for the Premiership Era Keeper rankings (only regulars) 1. Friedel - Arguably the best keeper in the world during his pomp at Ewood, definitely the best in the Premiership between 02-04, memorable performances? Where do you start? Southampton away, Fulham home, Worthington Cup Final, Goal vs. Charlton, away at Sheffield United and on and on 2. Flowers - Vital saves at vital times, particularly VE Day, but his kicking let him down. Memorable performances? VE Day and Stan Collymore's goal! 3. Robinson - Player of the Season last year, probably going to be remembered for his penalty heroics against Chelsea in the cup and the bravery away at Wigan rather than actually making saves! 4. Filan - Player of the Season the last time Rovers went down, made some stunning saves, had a good career after Rovers as well! Memorable performances? hmmm 5. Mimms - Remember him being solid, but nowhere near as good as Flowers.
SAS Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Our defence invites long range shots, what else do we expect.
Amo Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 4. Filan - Player of the Season the last time Rovers went down, made some stunning saves, had a good career after Rovers as well! Memorable performances? hmmm First PL keeper to save a Frank Leboeuf penalty.
