[Archived] The signing of Ribeiro

I guess im not the only one who finds this signing strange.

Lets start with what we know about him and his past career.

hes a 28 year old right back who used to play for Grêmio Barueri (not to be mixed with Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense)

Grêmio Baureri is not a top flight brazilian club, they are a small club who were relegated from the top national division in brazil in 2010. (the clubs play in two divisions, one regional and one national). They are however still in the paulista serie A which is the top regional division in the area around Saö paulo. From wikipedia his career doesn't seem to have been very good. in 2005 he got 15 games on loan with palmeiras which is one of the biggest clubs in Brazil, but after that he has played in smaller clubs until he signed with Grêmio Baureri.

When we signed him i thought it was strange, sin he's not a young talent anymore and he didnt come from one of the big clubs in brazil, but at that time i thought the coaches must have seen something that impressed them.

So the big question is why did we sign him?

From what i've understand he was here on trial, and he impressed so much that he got a 3 year deal. This would mean that kean saw something in him that he though would strenghten the team, or at least be a support/reserve for salgado. However he hasnt played any games for the first team (and has he even sat on the bench yet)

It is a well known fact that every brazilian football player who has gone straight from the brazilian league to premier league has been a failure, so maybe its not a bad thing that he hasnt played yet. However would steve kean know this, and considering he acually got signed after a trial period it would be reasonable to think that he should have played at least 1 game by now considering all our injuries.

He is quite small (5 feet 7 1⁄2 inches) and not used to english football, so maybe he needs time to adjust like formica, and is in keans "future plans".

Since venkys took over it they have really wanted to sign a brazilian footballer. Apperantly venkys have some business interest down there. We didnt get Miranda (who is a very good defender from what i've heard) so maybe ribeiro was a desperate move for venkys to sign a brazilian?

The whole deal smells a bit fishy imo.

Has anyone of you seen Ribero play? Watched him on the training grounds or in reserve games. Anyone know how good/bad he is?

Does anyone know which agent was behind this deal. Is he in any way linked to Jerome Anderson?

or is he just another "failed" signing by mr potatohead kean?

It's signings like Riberio and Myles Anderson which have been done for reasons other than football that make me despair.

Why would management/Owners set out to deliberately weaken the squad.

I've not seen either play but if they can't get a first team run out the ways things are then they must be complete crap.

Kean is playing kids before Riberio aka the next Denis Irwin.

I would really like to see comments from those who have seen Riberio and Anderson play for the Reserves.

How good is Steve Keans autobiography going to be? We as fans clearly have no clue how things at the club work, people who are "insiders" have proved time and time again they also have no clue when it comes to the truth. Mr Kean will clearly be unemployable after his long overdue sacking comes, maybe we can find some answers when an autobiography will be his only source of income! (oh yeah he's still in line for a huge payout either way)

Hopefully Kean's autobiography will be out before this Christmas! something to steal buy for people I don't like.

You missed a couple of interesting ones there mate.. like the fact he didnt even get his contract renewed playing for a lower league club in brazil as such was unemployed when he arrived... personally reckon Kean got his Grêmio and Grêmio mixed up and thought he had signed a corker.

The lad actually used to be a winger at one point (while at palmeiras I believe) and then later converted to wing back..

There are a few decent youtube videos of him in action that I posted a while back on the transfer thread when we first signed him.

Overall from what I hear he is not good enough for the premier league, a bit of hard work to look impressive on trial got his long contract and now just going no where.

I actually have started to come to the conclusion that we have been planning on relegation for a long while.. I reckon Goodwillie, Petrovic, Bruno et al will do well down in the championship.

I've seen quite a bit of Bruno in the Reserves and he's a neat, tidy but far from outstanding full-back. You certainly wouldn't want to see him in the first team. The fact that Adam Henley got ahead of him means he is now behind Salgado, Lowe and Henley for the right-back spot. In other words the Venky Empire have given a three year contract to a fourth choice right-back. He will either languish in the Reserves for the next three years or the club will have to find the money to pay up his contract in full. Either way it seems a huge waste of money but, then again, we have Myles Anderson playing alongside him in the Reserves who would appear to be another waste of money.

It's not the first time we've made mistakes but with Venky's at the helm you get the feeling that we are still waiting for a decision, or indeed a signing, that's not a mistake. At least Bruno and Anderson didn't cost money. Apart from Yakubu, all of Kean's/Venky's signings have looked well short of the mark so far. Rather than worry about Bruno, I'm more concerned about the £7.5 million spent on Dann, and the money spent on Petrovic, Vukcevic, Formica and Goodwillie. At the moment all of these players look distinctly off the pace.

Do you think that's because they are inherently bad players? Or just because our manager is a bag of daz? Goodwillie scored for fun in Scotland, Vukcevic has looked good for Montenegro and Formica has shown some real ability in flashes. Dann has done nothing to warrant his pricetag and Petrovic fair enough doesn't even look like a footballer, but I think all these new players would vastly improve under the tutelage of a real manager like Hughes or O'Neill.

Maybe I'm wrong - but I'm sure that Roversinsider (or whatever his name is) on Twitter, listed a few agents that were taking this club for a ride.

Obviously one was Anderson - but I'm sure one was called Ribeiro. Maybe Jorge Ribeiro?

Could this by a transfer in exactly the same bracket as that of Myles Anderson? Get the kid a move and pocket a tidy signing on and agent fee? Or maybe I'm adding 2 and 2 and coming up with 5?

That's how these agents come up with their fees..... Oh sorry, forgot the multiply by 10!

But seriously this guy is another stinking turd in the punch bowl that is Rovers under the chicken barons. The club is rotten to the core!

This is another issue which the press should be putting pressure on Kean to answer questions on.

I have heard also that Ribeiro's father happens to be an agent, which, along with the Myles Anderson deal surely represents a 'conflict of interest'? How can signing a player who just so happens to be the son of your agent who also happens to advise the owners of the club not be a matter for investigation?

The press should be asking Kean why these two players were signed and allocated precious places in the 25 man squad when they are clearly not good enough for Premier League football. I don't even understand why they are in the reserves. Surely it is much more rewarding to have a 17/18 year old prospect playing reserve football than a 28 year old and a 21/22 year old?

What were they signed for? Kean's laughable comparisons to Dennis Irwin and Chris Smalling clearly don't stand up as even he knows they are not good enough and preferred to play young Adam Henley at RB against Wigan. No doubt Kean will try and claim the credit for giving Henley his break in the first team, as he seems to do every week for Jason Lowe.

I do think it makes the picture clearer as to why he was given the job. Can you imagine Allardyce or Hughes signing either of these two just because they have influential fathers?

Bloody hell. I've only just seen he signed a THREE YEAR deal!

This transfer absolutely stinks. This has to be the work of an agent, there is no way Kean had a scouting network in place that could discover players from regional Brazilian teams.

Maybe our only saviour from Venky's and Kean is that these sort of transfers get investigated. If you combine this with the figures for agents' fees over the summer then it's not hard to guess what is going on.

Indeed, his brother was his agent. He probably done the normal, one for you, 2 for me and 2 for Kean deal. Agents love our club!

Hoilett's has his dad as his agent

Yeh man i've seen him both training and in matches and let me tell you if he ever gets in the first team then pigs might just be able to fly.

He and Anderson have been bought to line the pockets of both Kean and Andersons dad and they are not the only 2 but watching them i really do think they wouldn't get in my sunday pub team. Ribeiro is too small and isn't very good at distributing the ball and Anderson as got a touch like a rap**t both not great squad players and both who regularly train with the reserves.

I tried to think of some examples, and the first two players that I thought of who came straight from the Brazilian league to England were Gilberto Silva and Lucas Leiva. Hardly failures. Fabio, Rafael and Denilson were others I thought of, who while they haven't set the world alight also haven't been failures.

So while it may be well known, it isn't actually a fact.

I can't believe you are all forgetting about Juninho! He was amazing in his first spell at Boro, straight from Sao Paulo.

He was indeed. I think I got him mixed up with the other Juninho (Pernambucano), as I dismissed him thinking that he came to 'Boro via France.
