Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted December 2, 2011 Moderation Lead Posted December 2, 2011 I tried to think of some examples, and the first two players that I thought of who came straight from the Brazilian league to England were Gilberto Silva and Lucas Leiva. Hardly failures. Fabio, Rafael and Denilson were others I thought of, who while they haven't set the world alight also haven't been failures. So while it may be well known, it isn't actually a fact. To be fair, Lucas Leiva was largely derided by scousers for a while, I believe they nicknamed him 'the invisible man'? But in all honesty, it's not a fact that all Brazilians were failures that came over here. Juninho did alright I seem to recall!

Lathund Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 To be fair, Lucas Leiva was largely derided by scousers for a while, I believe they nicknamed him 'the invisible man'? They're a fickle bunch indeed, seeing as how now they consider him one of their best players.
Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted December 2, 2011 Moderation Lead Posted December 2, 2011 They're a fickle bunch indeed, seeing as how now they consider him one of their best players. Indeed, he's been nothing short of superb this season IMO.
Lathund Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Bebe anyone? The Portuguese one? Or is there another?
Kendalrover Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 I think that Venkys have business interests in Brazil and weren't they using their 'contacts' to sign some Brazilian players to help raise their profile in that country. Alternatively he was just looking for a player who makes Salgado look good.
Amo Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 By 26, Denis Irwin had won his first trophy for Man. Utd - beating Barcelona 2-1 for the 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup Final. By 28, Bruno Ribeiro hasn't kicked a single ball in anger for ailing Blackburn Rovers. Carry on, Steeeeeeeeeeeeve!

Liverpool have rather a good manager now ...That could be the difference
McClarky Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 No doubt that this was dodgy. There are thousands of good young players in Brazil and yet we sign someone who is completely unrated and well past the sell by date. Someone asked Tim Vickery on World Football about him and he laughed and said it was a bit of a "surprise" he had come to Europe. That was at the time as well. Wonder which agent he's with?

This one was sooooo wierd i honestly don't think it had anything to do with SEM or any particular employee. I think this just smacks of a favour from Venky's to an existing contact in Brazil. It's plainly obvious that Kean didn't want him.
Brfcrule1 Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Also given the fact coco is looking for a new RB it will push him further down the pecking order even I questioned his signing at the time IMO total waste of money.
T4E Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 So, again, why did we sign him? This seriously needs looking at, it makes no sense whatsoever but somehow it's being allowed to slip under the radar almost unquestioned.

I think it may well be worth looking to see if his family are involved in the food industry!!
Pedro Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 When Kenny Dalglish and Ray Harford were in charge of the team we had Paul Dalglish and Paul Harford in the reserves. I don't remember them being compared to decent players though
T4E Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Am I right in thinking both were pretty young at the time?
LeChuck Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 There's also a world of difference between having a few youth team players around on YTA deals and signing players on 3 year pro contracts, almost certainly involving agent fees.

Pedro Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Am I right in thinking both were pretty young at the time? Yes and very average too. I think Dalglish's son went on to play for Norwich but I have no idea what happened to Harford's.
EwoodDawn Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Yes and very average too. I think Dalglish's son went on to play for Norwich but I have no idea what happened to Harford's. finished playing at Aldershot?

Pedro Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 finished playing at Aldershot? Better than Anderson and Ribiero then! There is something very iffy about the Ribiero signing and as someone said, I wouldn't be surprised if he had a relative in the fast food industry

I didn't realise he had put them both in the 25 man squad though!! I'd be interested to know what we are paying them a week.
Mafioso Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 5 FIRST TEAM defenders out injured... its basically now or never.
Ricky Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 And I bet he still doesn't get anywhere near the team!!
