[Archived] Great article on Rovers/Venkys

Hey

Just came to post an article about our club in the canadian press. I believe it to sum everything up perfectly

Enjoy (or not) :P

Blackburn Rovers beat Swansea 4-2 to move off the foot of the Premier League table, Saturday, and while a good result it will hardly comfort a large section of the club’s support that can see only doom and gloom awaiting them this season. Club owners Venky’s haven’t a clue how to run a football club, and with each passing month demonstrate more and more just how out of touch with reality—nevermind out of step with their own fans—they really are.

But first, a sentence or two about today’s win.

Aiyegbeni Yakubu scored all four Rovers goals at Ewood Park in a match where many of his teammates happened to play their best games of the season on the same night. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. In fact, it should happen more often. This side has good players in each third of the park, and everyone from Paul Robinson to Christopher Samba to Gael Givet to Mauro Formica put in a good performance. That they don’t do it more often is down to the ineptitude of head coach Steve Kean, who we’ll get to in a moment.

In the year since Venky’s took control of Ewood Park, Blackburn Rovers have been nothing short of a laughingstock. First it was the bizarre decision to sack Sam Allardyce and install Kean as manager; then it was a string of absurd transfer targets. In the past two transfer windows Blackburn have been linked with moves for Ronaldo (the fat one), Ronaldinho, Kaka, Raul and Andre-Pierre Gignac, among others. Ignore the fact that none of these players would ever entertain a move to Blackburn (money, after all, often speaks louder than common sense), it’s just highly unlikely that anyone at the club—especially Kean—possesses the competency to actually get such a deal done.

Then there was the unconscionable act of handing Kean a contract extension when a pink slip would have been more appropriate. There are enough quality players in the team to warrant a mid-table position, but at the very least they should certainly not be haemorrhaging goals at their current rate. To date, only Bolton Wanderers have recorded a poorer defensive record.

If Venky’s stick with Kean they face the very real threat of relegation, and given the way the club is run it wouldn’t be at all surprising if they didn’t get back to the top flight for a long, long time. Those are the stakes, which is why—while demonstrations against Steve Kean are all well and good—Rovers fans would do well to turn their ire on the club’s owners.

One of the proudest moments of fan power occurred just over 13 months ago when Liverpool supporters took it upon themselves to oust the inept ownership tandem of Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. Sure, the courts would have probably taken the club from the two Americans anyway, but you can’t argue the fact that the single-minded solidarity of the fans at least hastened the process.

No, Blackburn Rovers aren’t Liverpool and never will be. But unless something is done—and nothing suggests Venky’s will be the ones to do it—they might end up a Colchester or Stevenage, or at least compete in the same division. That’s where things are headed, and don’t let a win, even a 4-2 win, over promoted Swansea convince you otherwise.

Brilliant article, sums up everything perfectly. This just really highlights how poor the football media are in England nowadays. The majority of them turned on the fans after Saturdays' win and came out with some stupid articles like this one:

Blackburn boo boys cannot help the team

Should forward the Canadian article to the Hansen et al. and say "look, the Canadians know more about what is going on than you lot!"

Some of the comments on that BBC article are by simpletons for simpletons. Believing that people would actually boo a goal
