Brfcrule1 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Hi all, I was hoping someone could give me some advice I am in the process of considering a move back to Blackburn and I need some advice can anyone please advise me: 1. I have been told Whalley Range & Mill Hill are areas vastly populated by asian people can someone confirm is this correct? I need to be sure as the last time I lived in Blackburn I encountered trouble and need to make sure I pick the right area also can someone confirm whether these areas have council blocks? Also what the position is about getting an exchange with my own council flat?. 2. I am visually impaired are there any social groups in Blackburn/Lancs that organise trips out and activities? apart from the blackburn rovers disabled supporters club which I am a member of. 3. Is Sky Broadband available in Blackburn/Lancs?. 4. Any other tips about moving including any safe areas I know up at infirmary st is quite rough so any tips on safe areas would be good as I am asian myself I would prefer to go to an area mostly populated with asian people maybe Kamy might be able to give me some advice on this?. 5. I keep hearing from people the ribble valley is very nice how far from Blackburn is this and what is there to do in the ribble valley?. I am eternally grateful of any advice people can give. Thanks Brfcrule1

Thanks Brfcrule1 Try these: http://www.placesforpeople.co.uk/ They have houses all over the country, and whilst not council they do provide social housing and are specialist in supported housing and the like.
T4E Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Some very undesirable people work for that company.
cn174 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Some very undesirable people work for that company. OI!!!! We've got quite a lot of houses all over Blackburn and surrounding areas, plus we do have some supported housing there (not sure off the top of my head what type of supported it is though). Blackburn is also well provided for from other providers. The biggest provider in Blackburn is Twin Valley Homes - http://www.twinvalleyhomes.com/ Others are: Guinness Northern Counties - http://www.ncha.co.uk/nchaweb Great Places - http://www.greatplaces.org.uk/Pages/default.aspx Contour - http://www.contourhousing.co.uk/ Ribble Valley Homes - http://www.ribblevalleyhomes.org.uk/ (these are ONLY in ribble valley, not in the authority of Blackburn itself) You should also register on the Council's housing lists. This will give you access to the council's remaining stock as well as houses from every provider in the authority. http://www.b-with-us.com/Data/ASPPages/1/30.aspx .You should register on as many different housing lists as you can as well as the council one. Hope that helps a little
Clitherover Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 5. I keep hearing from people the ribble valley is very nice how far from Blackburn is this and what is there to do in the ribble valley?. Good luck trying to get a council house in the Ribble Valley, took some friends of mine over five years on the waiting list before they were even considered, I bet it's even longer now.
roversmum Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I think he might be looking for a swap in which case might have more luck.
cn174 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I think he might be looking for a swap in which case might have more luck. Possibly, but doesn't he live in London? I'm no expert, but swapping across different associations and across authorities probably can't happen - you'd need someone else willing to move from Ribble Valley to London for a start! If he already lives with a national housing association with properties in this area then it would easier to get a transfer. I've also found the details of a really good community centre not too far from Ewood. I don't know if they have anything specifically for visually impaired, but when I visited they had a lot of stuff going on. BuckyRover Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Can joe public still get council houses? I thought they were all populated with union leaders.

It can be surprisingly easy. My elder daughter wasn't happy when she first moved up here, put her name on the transfer list (or whatever they call it these days) and found a swop easily. When she came back, she privately rented for a while, was offered an association house, and one year later was able to swop it for one where she now lives. There are always people looking for an exchange, for various reasons, and I'm sure there will be someone wanting to move to London.
BPF Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I'm genuinely not trying to make a point here, just enquiring. If you live in a council provided house, do they still let you pay the extortionate money that Sky charge for their services?
Paul Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I know nothing of how council housing works but my guess is the local authority get a pretty hard time if seen to pass judgement on how people spend their disposable income. If the rent is paid food or Sky is the tenant's choice.

If you live in a council provided house, do they still let you pay the extortionate money that Sky charge for their services? Only thing they have a say on is if they allow you to put the dish up, same with alarm systems. That being said, they told me I can not bleed my own radiators, not that I listen. Not the most difficult of things to do. I can say they do provide you with wallpaper and/or paint for rooms that need decorating, and if anything goes wrong they have to fix it, unless you caused it
Brfcrule1 Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 Thanks very much everyone for all the links I have now bookmarked them all and will be registering with them shortly yes BPF providing I pay for sky they usually don't mind you having sky. Thanks cn for the links and the info in blackburn of the community centre that is really helpful. cn the inquiry on the ribble valley I was only enquiring about visiting there and what there is to do in the ribble valley and general info. When I move it will be to somewhere in Blackburn & as you cn I will be looking for an exchange i.e. finding someone who is looking to swap a blackburn flat and look to move to my council flat in London & depending on the type of property I would move to blackburn. Also I know it's happening to my block in London they are installing a new satellite system to service all the homes in the block & am pretty sure it will be rolled out throughout the country thanks daz helpful to know regarding wallpaper & paint. Thanks a lot roversmum for all your help and advice with this thread and your advice on facebook I definitely have a lot to be getting on with and probably have enough links to homes in Blackburn . Could someone please answer my earlier question is Whalley Range & Mill Hill where a lot of Asian people live & do they have council blocks in those areas?. Thanks once again for the information provided so far.
Backroom Tom Posted January 6, 2012 Backroom Posted January 6, 2012 It's a bit of a delicate subject which is why people may have chose not to answer but yes Whalley range certainly is a mainly Asian area I believe not so sure about mill hill actually.
Brfcrule1 Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Thanks Tom will look into whalley range sorry but did not mean to offend anyone it's just that when I do find somewhere I need to be 150% sure as my last stay in Blackburn was a disastrous one and want to make sure this time I get it right. thanks for the info.
OhmiBRFC Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 If you're Asian then I would avoid Mill Hill. Audley Range, Whalley Range are the areas you want. As well as around Shear Brew.
Brfcrule1 Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 thanks for the advice ohmibrfc will bear that in mind.
Clitherover Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 cn the inquiry on the ribble valley I was only enquiring about visiting there and what there is to do in the ribble valley and general info. Not very much to do here really apart from look at nice scenery and pretty villages. It's good if you like walking, but even then the Yorkshire Dales are only a few more miles up the road and it's much more spectacular there if countryside is your thing. It's a nice place to live, but not a lot to do.

If you live in a council provided house, do they still let you pay the extortionate money that Sky charge for their services? You can own ten houses and still be eligible for a council house. See Bob Crow, £120k per annum and is in a council house. It makes me sick.

It makes me sick. Iam in the RMT union and I can't stand the guy, lost so much money through his pointless strikes, it didn't surpise me when I found out he lived in a council house
BuckyRover Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Saying it makes me sick is a bit Daily Mail but I'd had a few drinks.

In the South (where I live) if you walked into a housing agency and enquired about the race of the people in the area you were moving to you'd be arrested and charged with Incitement To Racial Hatred.
