You make that sound a crime. Who on earth doesn't?

I don't really get this selfish green eyed attitude which you have and I never will. Anybody who starts with nothing and does well to whatever degree will inevitably pay more tax than the average person. Why should they not be allowed to earn the fruits of their efforts? What is the incentive to kids to study hard, work hard and pass all those exams if by doing so you are exploited through the rest of your working life? Thats what all this soak the achievers is, it's just a form of exploitation. 'Doing well' is treated as a crime by those that haven't the wit, intellect or balls to do anything other than sit on sofa's watching sky tv and existing on microwaved slop, duty free samson roll ups and super strong lager. Incredibly the workings of our democracy allow each member of this rapidly expanding underclass as much say in the political direction of this country as any true Captain of industry. I've an effin massive corporation tax bill to pay this month, much of which will end up indirectly buying the above products and then funding the health dept to patch up the obesity, lung cancer and liver failure

It's likely if not probable that the Walkers directly or indirectly paid more tax than that paid by everybody who has ever posted on here, more even than the entire combined population of Little Harwood where they were born. Not only that by hard work and 'getting on' in life they provided income for thousands of their workers who all paid tax on their earnings. Have they not contributed enough to the coffers of this country? Did Jack or Fred retire at 65? Did they hell. Yet on the other hand they attract criticism from idlers who can't wait to take early retirement and who sit on their arses and contribute sweet FA to the country’s economy.

Tell you what Jim (and Colin) stop acting like parasitical tapeworms and if you feel so strongly about people who can afford paying more tax why doen’t you two contact the HMRC and volunteer to pay the 40% rate on ALL your earnings? Alternatively why not instruct them to dispense with the tax threshold and offer to pay tax on all your earnings? You can afford to I'm sure and it would be a magnificent gesture to the citizens of this country.

Btw it appears today that the Beckhams are selling up and taking themselves and their £165m fortune off to the States. Good eh? That’s a great indictment of our tax laws I don’t think. I bet US immigration and the IRS will welcome them and their loot with absolutely open arms.

btw print this and pin it to the mirror ....http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/parasite?q=parasite

Gordon, you have nailed it mate. I couldn't agree more with you.

On yer high horse again matey, great stuff.

Anybody who starts with nothing and does well to whatever degree will inevitably pay more tax than the average person.
Not correct. Only those who go over the higher tax threshold pay higher tax.
Why should they not be allowed to earn the fruits of their efforts?

They usually do by being rich.

'Doing well' is treated as a crime by those that haven't the wit, intellect or balls to do anything other than sit on sofa's watching sky tv and existing on microwaved slop, duty free samson roll ups and super strong lager.

Really? That comment baffles me. Any proof? Do actually know any of these people and, more pertinantly, what do they have to do with tax thresholds? Thank goodness you didn't include their use of apostrophes. (*Shakes head in shame*.)

It's likely if not probable that the Walkers directly or indirectly paid more tax than that paid by everybody who has ever posted on here.

Really? Proof needed on that one. But neither you nor I, nor the inhabitants of Little Harwood probably have the option of moving to The Channel Islands to avoid paying tax.

Not only that by hard work and 'getting on' in life they provided income for thousands of their workers who all paid tax on their earnings.

Correct, but you fail to mention the other side that those workers contributed, by their labour, to The Walkers' millions. The Walkers couldn't have done it without them. It cuts both ways.

Tell you what Jim (and Colin) stop acting like parasitical tapeworms and if you feel so strongly about people who can afford paying more tax why doen’t you two contact the HMRC and volunteer to pay the 40% rate on ALL your earnings?

That's OK mate, because......

I've an effin massive corporation tax bill to pay this month.

So no need for Jim & me to chip in, you've covered it for us. Cheers Theno, the drinks are on me next time we meet up......

BTW.Providing a dictionary explanation for an insult doesn't make it any less of an an insult. here

All the best

Colin

Wrong. Forget the higher tax threshold, forget too VAT etc etc the simple fact is that somebody who earns 40k pays more income tax than someone who earns 20k. Explain why that should be without employing your own brand of immature flippancy.

Probably one of the most appalling and depressing diatribes I've read on this messageboard for some years.

This sums you up.

Why didn't you quote it all Jim? Too close to home was it?

btw it seems to me that you are just as obsessed with greenbacks although in your case it's the ones belonging to other people that you covet most.

Bit of advice for you... stand on your own feet and don't rely on others to subsidise you and yours through life. You'll feel much better for it.

Bit of information for you Alf..... I've stood on my own feet all my life and never had to rely on anyone to "subsidise" me. The difference is I can see the bigger picture and unlike you not just the end of my nose. Despite what your anti-hero Thatcher said, there is such a thing as society. Think about it, you'd be a better human being for it.

Always voted Conservative Gord (you tend to follow your parents anyway) but this lot are starting to take the ######. Dismantling our armed forces (god knows what we would be capable of if the Argies take the Falklands again) wage differentials between north and south despite the same job being done (london weighting has always been there but this is more general). I can't get a first class stamp now for less than 60p. And here's the money shot, why do we need to get rid of all the debt seemingly overnight ? All of us have carried debt over our working lives, mortgage or a loan to buy a decent car, we haven't ended up as financial ruins have we ?

Still love Maggie, Milliband is less than charismatic (I'm being generous) but this coalition is rubbish, the last budget bummed all of us.

Rem back just two years Nick? This next decade was going to be damned uncomfortable for any govt. History might reveal that the 2010 election was the one to lose.

How about the fact that the rich should pay more tax than the poor. Pretty simple really.

And look! I've made this simple point without resorting to your post's personal insults about "immature flippancy." I'm quite willing to have a sensible & mature discussion here, so perhaps you might like to reign in your ad hominem comments.

I am neither immature nor flippant. Those words are just yours. They may deflect from your points of view if you resort to personal insults rather than adressing the serious points we are discussing here.

Thanks

Colin

Too simple for me. If we ALL pay a set 35% of our income (for example) then the people who earn more will pay more by definition. Why is that not enough in your opinion?

Old flat tax argument. US Republicans are in favour which sounds a warning bell to anyone with a fair mind (not you obviously).

Wouldn't suit you would it? It'd be completely fair and would treat everybody equally.....

.....but on second thoughts I don't know any socialist living or dead who would accept such a thing. Do you?

Under the flat tax the rich would pay less tax and the poor would pay more. As a rabid right-winger I assume this is your idea of fairness.

There's a quote by an economist that says rich people are the real parasites.

That's because a parasite does not make its presence known to the host. It sits there bleeding it of nutrients.

In the same way the rich avoid taxes and make the middle and working classes pay disproportionately more. Those same middle and working classes have to work their asses off to earn their corn. And by doing so, they keep the rich (who can afford to let their money work for them) richer.

I've worked my ass off for the last 15-20 years, not got that much to show for it. By the time I can afford to retire, I'll be fit to drop.

People who dismiss the unemployed and dependent as “parasites” fail to understand economics and parasitism. A successful parasite is one that is not recognized by its host, one that can make its host work for it without appearing as a burden. Such is the ruling class in a capitalist society.” - Jason Read]

You're right Toppers. I can't work out if we have the dumbest MPs or the dumbest general public.

A Minister gobs off about filling up jerry cans and everyone goes barmy. Of course, the greedy forecourt owners bung up their prices in response and the government makes millions extra revenue in 48 hours. The news channels lap it up and whip up the public with their sensationalist headlines.

Meanwhile, any talks with disgruntled lorry drivers are put off for a week so that they avoid a problem over Easter.

I've answered my own question - people are dumb.

Why are you surprised ?

In the past week this disastrous govt has cut taxes for the rich in the Budget while raising taxes for old-age pensioners (Granny tax), unbelievably slapped VAT on takeaway food cooked to certain temperatures (Pasty tax), the Tory party treasurer has been caught on camera selling audiences with the primie minister to the highest bidders, and now this fuel debacle.

The good news is Ed is miles ahead in the latest polls. Following the ten point lead from ComRes yesterday, tonight’s YouGov poll for the Sun has figures of Conservatives 33%, Labour 43%, LibDems 9%.

Labour might be ahead in the polls but it's elections that count. If it came to voting for a Prime Minister then Milliband is never going to really be taken seriously - there's more chance of you being the next PM than that mealy-mouthed twit.

 Really? Well just a few hours after your post he certainly doesn't appear to be in Bradford if thats anything to go by.

Odd thing about polls though (if you are right) cos it appears the only way to do well in the polls is lose the previous General election! If they had actually won I'm sure Gordon Brown would now be as popular as the proverbial turd in a swimming pool.

Funny that.

Have you read various reports about the demographics of

the voters involved.

I'm surprised you haven't had a rant against the voters responsible for the swing towards mad George.
