[Archived] Good Friday football

I was just looking through the sport offerings for today on Sky and noticed the usual Good Friday rugby league encounters between Hull and Hull KR, Wigan and Saints.

I've not looked back at our fixtures but my poor memory seems to recall we used to play away at Oldham on Good Friday mid to late 80's. On the face of things it was a cracking away fixture, we'd take a big support which we always did when doing well back then, but that bleedin plastic pitch, did we ever win on that thing?? and Andy Ritchie, Oldhams very own Simon Garner, always played a blinder and usually scored.

Happy days, even though they used to turn us over.

If my memory serves me correctly I thought we used to have a couple of derby matches over easter, but, didn't we play Fri, Sat and Mon?

Always remember my dad and uncle debating where we should park because the fair would be on the car park, and those were the days of 5-7000 crowds.

In the good old days we played either Friday, Saturday and Monday or Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. Probably did play some local derbies if the opportunity arose, but I remember going to Notts Forest one Tuesday.

My memories of Oldham are generally that is was always bl00dy cold no matter when you went.

I may be wrong but I only think we are playing two games this Easter because the season has to end at least four weeks before the Euros start.

Aye it was, there and Huddersfield always seemed to pour down or snow!! Carlisle was another cowd one. At least we could stand up in those days and hop from one foot to another!!

Ahhh..the Easter fair at Ewood and the Parched Pea tent!!

Next door to the 'Hook a duck' , the issue was do you take the goldfish home first or take it to see the Rovers?

I got thrown out for throwing a snowball at a Oldham player once

We had a few games there in August too.

I remember some of us from Chorley going in the home end one year with Lenny (what happened to him?). I ended up in the back of a black mariah.

When the coppers dragged me out I was on top of the moors. One said 'by the time you get back to the ground the game will be over'. I got back for the last ten minutes.

I don't like Oldham.

Didn't we once play Burnley at Ewood,Easter mid-late 70's and there was loads of trouble and stabbings on the fair?

Used to love that big couldron on the open fire right in the middle of the tent Adopted..probably wouldn't be allowed now!

The poor fish would end up down the drain Gav :D

A lot of trouble with Oldham back then!! I remember around 30 of them coming into the old Blackburn End one game and started chanting "The Oldham" at half-time. They got well and truly kicked down the steps to the safety exit (corner of BE and JW) and then acted like conquering heroes as they got led to the away end past the Nuttall Street stand. Bloodied, but still walking, with police escorts!

We went in their end, the Chaddy End, around 1973/74 ish. The coaches arrived and we simply queued up outside and got in. There were hundreds of Rovers fans in there, if not a thousand or so. Obviously the Oldham fans came in later and a long line of police separated the two sets of fans.

It was around that time when we played Oldam at Ewood over Easter because I can remember the fair being on near where the gypsy encampment is now.

The day in the Chaddy End, I could well have been with Exiled in Toronto if my memory serves me, although it was nearly 40 years ago!
