Day of reckoning - Rovers will be made to sweat

17-May-2012 |

IT WILL be a battle for the two play-off places for three top clubs and a battle for survival by the three bottom clubs when the curtain closes on the National First Division season on Sunday.

The automatic promotion chapter was closed last weekend by University of Pretoria, who sealed a place in the Absa Premiership by winning the league.

Now the focus has shifted to the two places available in the national play-offs that will also feature the club that finishes 15th in the Premiership.

The NFD trio that will battle for the two places are league runners-up Blackburn Rovers, who have amassed 49 points, newcomers Chippa United with 48 and the Neil Tovey-coached Thanda Royal Zulu with 47.

It is expected that Rovers will be made to sweat for maximum points as they host relegation candidates Bay United at Buffalo City Stadium on Sunday (3pm kickoff). A draw would not help either club.

At the same time at the LC de Villiers Stadium in Pretoria, Thanda are expected to get a freebie from AmaTuks, who have nothing to gain from the match.

Chippa United might also have an easy ride away to FC AK, who lost out on a spot in the play-offs when they were defeated 4-3 by Dynamos in Giyani last weekend.

The match will be played at Eldorado Park Stadium, also on Sunday at 3pm.

At the bottom of the log, with Atlie FC already relegated, either Mpumalanga Black Aces or one of the two Limpopo-based clubs, Bay United or Dynamos, will join them in the amateur ranks.

Aces have 30 points while their fellow strugglers both have 32 points.

Dynamos are away to Carara Kicks at Charles Mopeli Stadium, while Bay will also be on the road at Rovers.

Aces are expected to get three easy points when they visit FC Cape Town, who have little to play for at NNK Rugby Stadium.

SUNDAY FIXTURES:

LC de Villiers: AmaTuks vs Thanda; Puma Rugby Stadium: Witbank Spurs vs United FC; NNK Rugby Stadium: FC Cape Town vs Aces; Buffalo City Stadium: Rovers vs Bay United; Eldorado Park: FC AK vs Chippa United; Parow Park: Vasco da Gama vs Atlie FC; Charles Mopeli Stadium: Kicks vs Dynamos; Kanyamazane Stadium: Sivutsa Stars vs African Warriors (All matches start at 3pm).
