Awful but expected news made worse by the fact it probably gives Kean even longer with his ready made excuse

I would have thought insurance was in place, however, if its the same knee as previous, has the medical not been carried out correctly?

need a hold up player now

Having been at Old Trafford on Sunday I'd say Chris Wood the 20 yr old NZ center forward would fit that criteria. Currently at West Brom and valued at less than a million.

Played like a younger Kevin Davis but without giving away the free kicks

Need to use the loan market well now.

Yep definitely. Not sure who's going to be available mind.

I've always liked the look of Chris Wood at WBA whenever I've seen him play, which has mainly been for New Zealand. Big, strong lad and will score a few goals. Knows this division well form previous loan spells.

Aren't insurance claims only for if the player has to retire? Doubt there will be any sort of claim going in for a 6 month injury.

BEST BLOW ROCKS ROVERS

Blackburn striker Leon Best is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage yesterday.

The 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international, a £3million summer signing from Newcastle, was carried off on a stretcher before half-time in Rovers' 2-1 pre-season friendly win over AEK Athens at Fleetwood.

Best had earlier put Rovers 2-0 ahead, adding to Nuno Gomes' opener with a fine individual effort.

A club statement read: ``Rovers are preparing for the start of the Championship season without Leon Best after the striker suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Sunday's pre-season friendly against AEK Athens.

``The Irish international, who only joined the club from Newcastle United earlier this month, was stretchered off shortly before half-time in the 2-1 win.

``Best, who had scored a superb goal in the game, was sent for a scan this morning and Rovers' worst fears were confirmed, with the 25-year-old now set to face an extended spell on the sidelines.''

Reports suggest the striker could be out of action for around six months.

Best is one of boss Steve Kean's flagship summer signings as Blackburn seek to gain an immediate return to the Barclays Premier League.

Now the Scot faces the prospect of heading into the forthcoming npower Championship campaign with Gomes and David Goodwillie as his only senior strikers.

Just made a poor transfer window worse. The people in power at Ewood need to get their backsides into gear and prove how serious they really are about getting back into the PL.

The squad needs real money spending on it.

This smacks of 1966 when Rovers signed Martin Britt from West Ham, a good centre forward but with a history of knee problems. He played a few matches for us and then retired.

Not saying Leon Best is finished but the lad was obviously a high-risk signing. Well done to Newcastle for getting £3m for a dud.

If we are really lucky he`ll be back at the tail end of the season. If I remember correctly Shearer had the same injury in `93 he was out for the season I personally have also had the injury and found that it seems to reoccur or flare up sometimes after the smallest tweak.

Are you thinking of Gilliver?

Definitely Martin Britt. Look here.

What I remember about Britt was that he was supposed to have been recommended by the West Ham directors and we bought him without seeing him.

Gilliver was the one from Huddersfield who came to us with and injury-I just thought that fitted in better with what you were writing.

I'll just withdraw with good grace!!
