Been speaking to someone I know from portugal and he says hes 99% sure this is bull he said that Nuno has said he'll play 1 more year at Braga then retire.

And another guy from portugal ive spoke to said this...

Well,he isn't what he used to be but stil he played fairly well in Braga and in my opinion he could've been part of the Portuguese squad in the Euro(none of the strikers there are way better than him).

The guy was like the secret weapon of Braga, they were having a difficult game the guy would come in and help the team score.

Nuno Gomes isn't a matador as we say in Portugal(that kind of player who almost never misses a chance and scores an huge amount of goals),he is more fit to play alongside another striker functioning as a second one.

Personally, while he may be still useful i would search another option in the market.

There isn't any Portuguese striker worth spending money on wages or transfers these days(ok you may say there's Ronaldo, but while he scores a lot he isn't a traditional striker),there are some very young kids who seem to have a bright future ahead of them but it's too soon to know.

would rather have Best and Naismith to be honest

Theyre hardly gonna set the Championship alive either. Im convinced Rovers wont!

Gomes used to get linked in his prime, but he's been on the decline for years.

Wouldnt surprise me if Rovers' brain trust try and talk Graham Alexander out of retirement!

I wouldn't recomend this signing.

Before he left for Braga, he was a sub in Benfica and in Braga ended up being one too.

His last 3 years:

2011/12 - 29 games, 6 goals, 3 assists, 1093 minutes

2010/11 - 10 games, 5 goals, 2 assists, 119 minutes

2009/10 - 23 games, 4 goals, 2 assists, 600 minutes

I guess he is just too old now...

That's a poor record when considering that with the greatest of respect the Portuguese ''Primiera Liga'' is a weak league, I can't imagine him getting many more in the Championship.

thats bullsh-t ,the primiera liga is miles better than the championship.and he is currentley playing for the fourth best team in that league.as we know our own premier league isnt as good as the media make out.

Where in my post do i mention the Championship being a better or as good a league as the Primiera?, I just said I don't see him getting many more goals in the Championship.

Why are we constantly linked with strikers!?!??? We need a GOOD holding midfielder and a LB and a centre back. Which is exactly what we needed at the start of last season!

Hmm. Well we have three holding midfielders in Nzonzi, Petrovic and Lowe. You would hope now we are in the Championship at least one could stand up and deliver and be a partner for Murphy (I don't think Nzonzi or Petrovic are going to find buyers). Also Henley and Morris can play left back. I wouldn't say we are looking too shabby at Championship level player wise. It's the manager who worries me....

Team as it stands - if the signings come off -

----------------Bunn

Orr---Hanley-----Givet (please stay!!)---Henley

--------------Petrovic

-Formica---Murphy---Pedersen

---------Best------Rochina

If Rochina goes Goodwille is kicking about. If Formica goes then Vukcevic can come in. If Vukcevic also goes then we need a right winger.

Subs:- Kean, Morris, Lowe, Marcus, Vukcevic, Goodwillie, Gomes

Squad:- Dunn, Linganzi, Slew, Cotton, Blackman

Assuming Sold:- Yak, Nzonzi, Martin, Dann (please!!), Robinson

I would say we are weakest at LB (need experience) and we need a centre half. If Dann goes we need two. If Dann and Givet go we need three! A good right winger would make a difference too.

This smells a long way of a deal engineered by agents looking to get one last payday out of an ageing asset. I wouldn't be completely opposed to having Gomes here as a Salgado-type role model and inspiration for the youngsters, but he'd better be on low wages and not seen as a replacement for Yakubu.

Gomes would be ok for back up, if we sign Best then he & Rochina must start up top next season. Gomes, Goodwillie & Slew would be good to have behind them two competing for places. No faith in Kean doing this though, i reckon Dunn will be his first choice in the "number 10" role

Lets be perfectly clear LOWE is neither a defensive or a holding midfielder. He is a full back at best. Playing him in midfield is one of te reasons why we were overun in every game he played in that position. No positional skill and no ability to make runs, creat space or to provide the killeer passes, all he does is foul and create havoc for our own defence.

Hard to tell whether that his own lack of ability or the result of him being the only with legs trying to cover the ground filled by the other less mobile players he had to play in midfield with him. Lack of cover was shown because the likes of Dunn could not move quick enough to cover him.

If we could provide another mobile midfielder with a sound footballing brain like Murphy calling the shots around him, could be the making of Lowe. All midfielders need mobility around them to allow them make passes.

Agree though that Lowe looks a better full back than midfielder though.

Douglas was poor in a team with better midfielders than we have now. Lowe is having to do a lot more than should be expected of a young player learning his trade.

The damage to his totally mismanaged career may be irreversible.

Lowe looking a better right back than as a midfielder last season also shows up the club's mis management last season rather than Lowe's inability in midfield.
