Could it not be that with him and Rhodes both being young lads from north of the border and maybe ending up good mates, with goodwillie having off field 'troubles', they didn't want their 8 million pound investment getting mixed up in anything unsavoury?

Goodwillie can neither head a ball nor play with his back to goal. He's no pace either so he isn't conventional centre forward material. He doesn't possess the qualities needed to play inside forward either. Basically he's just a penalty box brawler who may be thrown on when all else has failed as a late second half desperation sub. Basically a bloody waste of money ..... unless of course one is viewing it after benefitting from a cut of the deal.
