I've had a thought about this for 10 mins and I actually think the answer might well be no. Of course the is no way he is worth 30 million. 8 million is around his mark I'd think. If in the premiership, he'd be up in the top 10 of striking talent in that division. And here in lies the probable reason for the rejection.

Where else would Huddersfield find a striker of such quality? they simply do not exist or at least the do not exist form a reasonable amount of money and the wages we would be looking to spend. A divisional rival would end up getting such a talent and that would hurt us in the coming championship race.

How much is promotion worth these days? £100 million? how would the chance of that balance against £30 million?

to reinterate, he is not worth anywhere near £30 million. If a premiership rival came in and offered that, we'd take it there and then. But another team in the championship with such a large price to play for? well I am not so sure.

This is one of the most naive posts I've ever read.

1) Yes, you definitely, definitely would take a £30 million bid.

2) You won't be anywhere near the promotion spots. I'd bet hard cash on it.

3) There's a decent chance we won't be serious promotion contenders either. Because of 2 and 3 together, we are highly unlikely to be divisional rivals for the promotion jackpot.

4) You're assumption that he would be in the top ten striking talents in the Premiership is utterly laughable when he hasn't had a season in a league BELOW that level yet.

5) He isn't presently worth 8 million right now, purely because nobody with no Championship experience is worth that. Hence nobody offering more than about half that so far. He's worth 8 million TO YOU (or more, conceivably, I agree, but nothing like 30 million, not even to you), not in the market generally. If someone paid 8 million they'd be paying over the odds.

6) Strikers of his quality do exist for 6 million or less, you just have to hunt hard and gamble. But you do NOT have the best 6-8 million striker in the world.

7) Let's assume for the sake of argument that you would accept 8 million from him for a Prem club. You seriously think the very slim chance that we would go up, you would just about stay down because of us, and that Rhodes would be the difference in both those things (despite you having 30 million to invest that you wouldn't if Rhodes stayed) means it's worth effectively a 22 million pound gamble? Seriously man, come on.

I'm not saying this to be harsh or disrespect your club, I just think you need to wake up and smell the coffee.

What will happen is that we will drag this out a couple more days, then admit defeat and sign no-one, or someone like Modeste on loan. WHam will bid 5.5m and get Rhodes.

Two things I've learned from this thread.

1) We are stil amateurish (being glass half full) when it comes to trying for decent signings.

2) If the posters on this thread are anything to go by, Hudds fans are a decent bunch.

I was having a bit of fun with the £30 million thing, one of your Blackburn fans proposed the figure a couple of pages back, can't let something like that go without have a little bit of a wind up?

The rest that I have posted though I fully stand by. Hoyle will not sell to a championship club ( Ok if you offer £30 mill then I'll even pay for the taxi to send him over). Rhodes will not be sold this late into this window.

He really is quite a talent though, uncanny knack of being quiet all game, then making a little movement in the box to make a tiny amount of space and bang! its in the back of the net.

With regards to Huddersfield challenging for the promotion. I think we can get into the play offs. I am happy to transfer the bet I proposed earlier about Rhodes signing for Blackburn.

I think/am sure Huddersfield will finish above Blackburn at the end of the season. If Blackburn finish above Huddersfield then I am happy to donate £50 to a charity of your choice. If Huddersfield finish above you then you donate £50 to the nominated charity.

Are you game? I am a man of my word.

talking of which,

town are away to Cardiff in the season opener tomorrow, it on sky. In true bullseye style you can check Jordan Rhodes out in a sort of "this is what you could have won" style. I'm just jesting, but do tune in and take a look at us, hopefully we'll put on a good show but its a tough opening game for us down in the valleys.

Certainly a difficult game, I think Cardiff will challenge for one of the top two spots. But then again they are the great underachievers of the Championship

 Rhodes won't even be the best striker on the pitch when Huddersfield start the season. How old do you have to be to remember the last time Huddersfield had a player who was even close to the talent of Craig Bellamy?

Agreed, but Bellamy hardly set this division on fire last time.....but with Whittingham and Gunnarsson alone Cardiff should win pretty comfortably in theory....this league's a bit mad but I doubt H'field will be challenging for promotion.....Cardiff will be challenging for automatic promotion again.

Are you game? I am a man of my word.

Well no, because I never said you definitely won't finish above us. As I see it we could finish absolutely anywhere in this league (except first, probably not second either). We're pretty much a wild card. Depends mostly on how our managerial situation progresses. We could be playoff candidates, we could get relegated, we could finish absolutely anywhere inbetween. A good manager and a good defender (probably with an average, versatile one thrown in) and we are the best side in the league, for my money. But we don't have those things, as it stands, and are therefore vulnerable. Sack Kean early and we could do well, if he is replaced well.

However, I AM willing to bet money that you won't make the playoffs. Whether you'll finish below or above us is another matter altogether.

As to the 30 million, you seemed very serious for several posts, so without the benefit of being able to read you as I would in real life, I assumed you were serious. Very well.

But Town WILL sell to a Championship club if enough money is offered, fact. The poster used the 30 million hyperbole to establish that fact. Reductio ad absurdum. So could you please stop trundling that statement out? It's more accurate to say (though impossible to know) 'nobody in the Championship will/can pay what it will take to sign Rhodes at this time'. Given deals I've seen time and again in the past with our club and also others, the fact we might be considered divisional rivals will only add around 20% to the price at most.

As to what you said about his playing style...being quiet most of the game is not a good thing. That little bit of movement will become harder over the course of a full Championship season, so may be his undoing if he can't contribute more than goal poaching. If the goal poaching fails to make the step up, so will he.

I will take on your bet Ben. If hudds finish above rovers I will donate 50£ to a charity of your choice. If rovers finish above hudds you will have to donate 50£ to a charity of my choice.

I'm not too confident on my bet and due to the kean factor, but I really think he will be binned, and if/when you lose Rhodes in january you may struggle to get the goals

I completely agreed with everything else you said but it's not necessarily a bad thing to be a striker like that....Raul was often like that, do nothing all game, barely even notice he's playing then he pops up with one or two goals....now obviously I'm talking about one of the best strikers in recent times, who is Real Madrid's top goalscorer ever, the Champions' League's top goalscorer ever and Spain's 2nd highest goalscorer ever, but the principle remains the same.

132 appearances (including sub) in the League, Carling Cup, FA Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy over the past 3 seasons and 84 goals......basically 2 goals every 3 games......now obviously this is a level higher but he's clearly very talented.....I could tell straight away from watching him and I've only seen him play a few times....I'm confident he could be good in the C'ship at least.....he's certainly too good for League 1.......someone gave Craig Mackail-Smith as an example the other day of a striker who had been prolific at League 1 level yet not in the C'ship but I was talking to a Brighton fan the other day about Rhodes and he mentioned Mackail-Smith saying their tactics just didn't suit him and that was the main problem.....I would be willing to gamble maximum 7 million on Rhodes, as all transfers are gambles anyway....the signing people were most happy with last season was probably Scott Dann......he could score enough goals, together with our midfield, to potentially fire us into the playoffs, even with the clown in charge....not that likely but you never know in football.

On subject of bets, I lost £20 to a Town fan last season (tenner each on Towh promotion, Rovers relegated).

This season its a straight who will finish higher, and a rather bizarre one where he's said Town will finish 8th and I snapped up all the other league places. An hour later he tried to renegotiate that one, but too late!

It is a hard time for the lad. I may be wrong but he got his first starting place for Scotland and scored. Two days later his team starts a season. If his mind is elsewhere than with the Hudds is even harder. Never thought he would became a Rovers player but he won´t be at his current club for long either.

We're all here to note the Ben v Puffsan bet so no wriggling out of it gents. At least one charity will benefit from it.

ben1142, you remind me very much of myself when we were a well run club and when i was convinved we wouldn't sell our better players as they were loyal to us and had long contracts. Unfortunately I realised that football had changed. Look at quotes from the player and the club when Damian Duff was sold. It's exactly the same as Rhodes, unfortunately for us the richest team in our league at the time did stump up the cash and the player was gone.

I don't think we have the cash to get Rhodes but I do believe that your owner would sell to another club in the division if the money was right.

Someone is willing to bet Huddersfield will finish above Rovers?! Absolutely no chance.

I'll join in and offer that person's charity £100 if Hudds finish above Rovers. In return, I'll be kind and say they only have to give £50 to a charity of my choice if Rovers finish above Hudds.

sorry rovers11, you are another one of the blue and white tinted spectacles brigade

I know the club has problems but, even in our current state, Huddersfield have nowhere near the quality Rovers have. They have a better manager but that is not saying much.

Do you seriously think Hudds will finish above Rovers?
