No-one as far as I can see has done that SR. Unless you can point to any particular post?

Sorry Den, I probably worded it wrong, I guess it's more of a gripe about people moaning about the price and saying "we should have done this, we should have done that". As a poster above me said, getting the 'I told you' in's early.

If it were a case of spending the money on sacking Kean and his clowns or buying Rhodes, then we'd take Kean going everyday of the week, but clearly the owners won't do this - for whatever reason.

Buying Rhodes for £8 million is a massive gamble, but if he fires us to promotion then it will have been a good deal.

Plus Austin comes ready made with a song,

He used to build walls

He used to build walls

He's Charlie Austin

And now he scores goals

But not a good one.

If Rhodes had come ready made with a song we'd have bid 9m quid 4 weeks ago.

Has any striker ever been an unqualified success after a big money move from a lower division?

I keep thinking of the likes of Jon Macken, Jermaine Beckford and David Nugent.

(file under 'I told you he was crap')

Oh come one.

Peter Crouch, Kenwyne Jones, ANdy Johnson, Matt Jansen, Grant Holt, Danny Graham.... not forgetting of course Kevin bleeding Phillips (non league to England bench)

Not a good one? It's brilliant, as you'll hear when he gets his hattrick against you lot :-)

We're winning with Kean,

We're winning keeeean,how ###### must you be?

We're winning with Kean

Get used to that one Longsider. Btw the way, you're not having Badcock ;-)

I might well have to, the way we've played so far, Bolton game aside. We've been truly awful.

And who or what is Badcock?

Sorry was being really slow there - I'm not aware we are after him but maybe he would be the type of player we need

You are in for him on loan and have a good chance of getting him!!

Well I'll have a moan. Why was similar investment not made last season when it would have kept us up? A load of tat on the cheap this time last year took us down.

Hope he does well but it is a gamble and the team is still unbalanced.

Crouch and Johnson both played in the top flight before getting expensive moves.

Danny Graham wasn't such big money.

Norwich paid buttons for Grant Holt.

Jansen, fair enough, but Jones is the only one on that list who retained his transfer value after a major move from a lower division.

Teddy Sheringham, Kevin Hector (Bradford PA - Derby County) John Aldridge, Ian Rush, Charlie Austin, Alan Clark, Kevin Kegan, Malcolm McDonald etc.

That's some top football archaeology, but Kevin Keegan only cost £35k and certainly didn't carry the weight of expectation for Liverpool's entire season / future. Also, it was common for players to move up the divisions then (and play in long trousers while smoking pipes).

£35,000 for Keegan was quite a bit of money in those days as was the £40,000 for Kevin Hector, Aldridge was bought from Newport County to replace Ian Rush!!

Ian Wright went to Arsenal from Palace and I forgot about Jansen,!!

From a Dingle on Claret Mad.

re: Rhodes to Rovers

and we all made fun off the venkys,i wish we had them at the turf instead of these clowns who keep selling every one off our players thats worth any money, and what have they done with the cash from jay rod,the share in the sale of fletcher,oh and don't forget we are still getting parachute paments this year to help us keep hold of our good players, thats a joke.

Didn't Aldridge play for Oxford before Liverpool? I think it was Rush who came from Newport ....

Worried about the pressure on the lad, if he's stuck up top by himself and he doesn't bag for a game or two he will be under pressure for the first time in his career

At Huddersfield I imagine he just got on with what he did and now he's expected to produce results, just wish we had someone else to share the burden but knowing Kean he'll have him isolated

Aldridge won the league cup before moving to Liverpool, so he wasn't exactly an unknown (or from a lower division) but he played for Newport when he was a nipper.

Anyway, they're among the last of an era when it was common for players to graduate through the divisions by earning a move to the likes of Liverpool or Forest in their early 20s. It hardly ever happens now, if Kenwyne Jones is the only legit one anybody can think of.

Kean will have to be very careful here, if Rhodes doesnt get goalscoring opportunities, its bye to the Donut, he has been given a goalscorer and his team must create, in my opinion, if the owners have backed a transfer of that magnitude, Stevie baby is under pressure to deliver!!

Shame Best isn't fit Tom. 4-4-2 would be the best set up for Rhodes at this moment in time, but not necessarily for the team. Playing on his own up front [and some of the HTFC lads reckon he can't really do that] might hold him back.

I remember Defoe at Bournmouth (think he was on loan from West Ham though)
