Matty Pearson and Jackson Ramm

Pearson to Rochdale and Ramm to Colchester!!

I expect Pearson to leave egg on our faces and sincerely hope Ramm does too, but Pearson was the best centre back in the ressies and he's been let go, absolute nonsense!!

No that was O'Connor....Pearson was another highly rated centre back who then wasn't getting a game because of Myles Anderson so he was put in midfield and then eventually released....not that a good youth player guarantees a good first team player but I remember hearing some very good things about him.....O'Connor likewise but more about Pearson.....let's hope this doesn't eventually come back to haunt us like Walters or Pilkington.

Pearson can't be that good.

He went to Lincoln City at the back end of last season, only played a couple of games and even they decided they didn't want him.

Good luck to him at Rochdale, though...

Two years ago he was the outstanding centre-back for the Reserves. Last season Anderson arrived and Pearson was shunted into midfield to make room for the favoured one and lost all confidence. A similar thing happened with Gavin Gunning - who was released at the start of last season and by the end of the season was named in the Scottish Premier League's team of the season after enjoying an excellent season with Dundee United. Still, when you have the new Chris Smalling who needs outstanding young talent that you have brought through the youth system?

Matty Pearson played a few games for Morecambe Reserves last year and looked a cut above. Very strong and assured, organised the back line well, seemed like a natural leader. Seemed a very mature and composed footballer considering he is 18. UNfortunately for Morecambe they couldnt find money within their budget to offer him a deal.

I said a while back that many young centre backs have gone through the academy/youth team ranks, looking good, but not making the grade.

At that level it's a lot easier to stand out being a centre half, than it is in any other position. At this young age, as long as you're reasonably quick and good in the air, you can take the eye mainly because you are bigger and stronger than the opposition. It's another world having to keep the shackles on players/strikers who are possibly bigger, stronger and faster than you - which is what happens as they get a bit older.

He along with Adam Henley, bossed Macheda, Oberton, Fletcher and Fabioi etc against Man U reserves in the cup final last year, indeed, Matty Pearson looked very assured and focused for a young centre back and his decision making and distribution was good!

We've probably let hundreds of centre halves go over the years, who looked good in the reserves Kelbo. How many of them made the top leagues after we released them?

Well if he can't get a game ahead of Anderson he can't be that good. You can't keep hold of these young players forever. If they aren't going to break through you need to relaease them and give them a chance to make it somewhere else. Good luck to him.

But could he not get games ahead of Anderson based on ability or because of who Andersons dad is and the connections he has at the club?

I think most regular watchers of the Reserves have formed their own opinion as to why Anderson keeps getting picked and it has nothing to do with ability. Both Pearson and Gunning were far more impressive than Anderson but, of course, as the old saying goes it's not what you know.....
