Moptop Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Talking to a Reading fan last night, I mentioned I was a Rovers fan of 36 years. He smiled and mentioned Kean and said, although everyone states he started off at Reading as a Coach, it was actually a Grounds man. He supposedly worked his way up. Did anyone else know this?

Yeah posted a link to an obscure article about this a few month ago on this thread I think, Mcghee felt sorry for him and gave him a job as odd job man when his glittering playing career ended, it was also McGhee who suggested him getting his coaching badges . He could have been the groundsman at Buckingham Palace he was good enough but there was another 20 other groundsmen in front of him.

Tom10K Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 There is always the Alan Nixon biography of Steve Kean http://www.people.co.uk/sport/football/news/2011/01/23/kean-machine-how-blackburn-rovers-boss-steve-made-it-to-the-top-job-at-ewood-park-102039-22868261/ I'm not sure he will be able to get back into his former profession of Taxi Driver when he eventually is removed from post here.
martonrover Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Congratulations. First numpty to bite. Been up since 3:50am so apologies for being unable to detect the lowest form of wit.
tomphil Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 http://videocelts.co...-the-groundsman If that's how easy it is to work your way up in football then it's no wonder there are so many bums about in the game. All you really need to be is an arse licker, most of them would not know what hard work is ffs!
Gav Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Nice sig, GAV. Please don't agree with me braddock, you're doing my messageboard cred no good at all!!
Backroom Tom Posted September 18, 2012 Backroom Posted September 18, 2012 Hate him and want him out of th club but I always give credit when it's due. He gets nearly everything wrong but in the last few games his subs have been spot on IMO the introduction of Nuneo and Nunes was influential as was Rochina coming on in the last 2
Backroom DE. Posted September 18, 2012 Backroom Posted September 18, 2012 They're sort of obvious subs though. It doesn't take a genius to work out these players would be effective late in the game. At least he's making subs, I guess. The only credit I can give him is he's worked out what those players sitting on the bench are actually for. The man is making us look awful despite having a team with hefty premier league quality. We've played 3 of the really poor teams in the league this year and looked terrible against all of them. With the team we have this should not be happening and I'm not confident this run will continue for much longer, great subs or not.

He is a lucky lad to have such a strong squad though.

We've still no idea of our best team, we still don't know the real capabilities of most of our players because of his madcap selection policies. We have no real game plan or method of play other than making the most of the luck that's been coming our way recently. The guys a charlatan and sooner or later he's inadequacies will bite us on the bum.

I agree he isn't the man for the job - but to put things in perspective - last time we were relegated we were awful in our first season. The difference this season - we are getting the results. The big question - will confidence return and performances improve to match the results - who knows - but we are gaining some momentum before we play the Blackpool's and Forests etc. Unusually - he was surprisingly realistic in his post match assessment.

Which is what I said in my post I was just saying one thing he has done right recently is the subs that's all no more no less. It doesn't change a thing about him as a manager or lack of one

Was 13 years ago tbf DMTP and Kidd wasn't much better than our Keano in terms of management ability. You say we're gaining momentum but our performances are not improving. It's not like these results are gradually improving our confidence, we started off today as poorly as any match so far this season. For the majority of the match we were poor, same as the last five games really, save a 30 min spell against Leeds. Victories should build confidence and lead to better performance levels. It's not happening for us right now. The only positive is that we're getting results, but what happens when we lose our first game? If this is us playing with confidence and momentum I dread to think what will happen when that is dented. I can only think of total freefall. I just hope, as some are suggesting, the team is good enough to get results regardless of manager. If not we could very quickly see this season turn nasty.
hesfromburn Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Wasnt Keans fault tonight, players didnt play well enough, Pedersen, Murphy and Dann to name a few. But we are still Unbeaten and winning. COYB!

COYB! Surely if players aren't playing well enough he can use a substitute? Surely we could use that argument for the entire last 18 months?
hesfromburn Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Surely if players aren't playing well enough he can use a substitute? Surely we could use that argument for the entire last 18 months? He did he performed an excellent sub - putting Gomes and Nunes on. Won us the game.
Tom10K Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 He did he performed an excellent sub - putting Gomes and Nunes on. Won us the game. Very very true, however in my opinion the manager should be able to set the team up properly to start with. After 30 minutes of the first half it was clear to everyone in the ground that something needed to be done. Do you really think that the performance tonight couldn't have been improved by the employment of a serious football manager?
Rover_Shaun Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Anyone know the last time we had less than 12,700 at a home league game? Surely it was in pre-kenny days before October 91? 21 long years ago

booth Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 What you mean the obvious substitution of someone who couldn't put any decent crosses into the box, for someone who could put a decent cross in? Personally I thought we were set up badly and we very badly organized for the most part. We also started off in the first half looking very under motivated and sluggish. He proved again that he cannot manage a football team. Barnsley on the other hand were very well organized, full of motivation but didn't have the players to make a difference.
Tom10K Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Anyone know the last time we had less than 12,700 at a home league game? Surely it was in pre-kenny days before October 91? 21 long years ago Was it me or did Barnsley bring a similar amount to Leicester and more than Hull. If this logic is true then the number of home fans must have decreased in every match this season. Despite the unbeaten run is it time for a retraction of the wins will bring back the fans? Yes. But Ive already accepted Kean isnt going nowhere. I could never give up hope on what would be such a momentous moment for the football club.
Rover_Shaun Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Maybe the walk ons are dwindling because they realise it's the same turgid crap but against far inferior opposition?

Dread to think what Fridays actual crowd will be
