Backroom DE. Posted September 22, 2013 Backroom Posted September 22, 2013 Apparently he called a meeting with the players and they told him they wouldn't play for him anymore. Not sure how true that is but it wouldn't surprise me - he hands out fines for all sorts of ridiculous reasons and always puts the blame on the players rather than taking any himself. Premier League footballers can be pampered tarts but nobody wants to be treated like a child. PDC's management style may work in the lower leagues but no chance of it working in the Prem.

They get paid. Steve Kean for Newcastle!
Audax Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Sunderland in 20th got beat by the 19th place club West Brom 3-0. No matter how you feel about the situation, that is an awful result and they were in a rough patch of about 4 matches, next 2 league matches vs. Man Utd. and Liverpool.
neekoy Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Another poisoned chalice, perfect for Di Matteo
Andy Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I can't believe anybody wanted Di Canio here, just a few months ago. Said at the time it would have been a horrendous appointment for us, never mind a Premiership club.

The only potential positive was that, as he's highly combustible- at the time sparking out Shebby could have been a real possibility!

I think Murphy and Orr would have been far more likely to get Di Canio's boot up their jacksies than Shebby Singh.

tkturner Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Far too much player power now in the game for me... Players should look to perform for their manager, manager should be the power, even if players dont really like whats going on they should still put in the effort, its like what happened with us, yes we all wanted Kean out but we also had far too many players not putting in a shift at the same time...
Salgado Is A Hero Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 I'd wager nearly all of their players were unhappy with him. For me, if that's the case then he's in the wrong and therefore should be held accountable.
Audax Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 I thought he, PDC, had just brought in two Italian players in since the season began giving them a total of 4. http://int.soccerway.com/teams/england/sunderland-association-football-club/683/ And that's fine, I thought I heard his backroom staff was Italian as well. It worked seemingly effectively at Swindon Town. I thought he left there because of financial misunderstandings with the higherups.

Not really. The players had had enough of his autocratic regime. It is extremely hard to give your all for someone you don't like or respect. Even for footballers getting paid oodles. The days of "get stuck in" being a top class motivating tactic are long gone. Sports psychology has made sure of that. I was once told that football is 90% physical, 10% mental; but the 10% controls the 90%. Little things like banning ketchup eat away at the 10%. I think Sunderland were right to pot him, they were certs for relegation with him. Di Canio will resurface but I think he will conform to the law of diminishing returns with each job tenure being shorter than the last, then ending up on the same managerial short list as Iain Dowie and Peter Reid.
Audax Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 And while banning ice in Coca-Cola may have been the final straw, his biographer Gabriele Marcotti believes some sections of the British media have unfairly typecast the Italian. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24209814 I wonder what is wrong with ice in coke? Really.
Shabani Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 He was taking them down, the players have saved the club and early enough that there's time to rectify it. I wish our players had done the same when Kean showed, quite conclusively, he was going to take us down...

Guest Norbert Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Di Canio at Sunderland would either work and be a bit eccentric, or be a complete and utter clusterf_ck with all sorts of crazy behaviour. It turned out to be the latter.

Amo Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 That clip of him and Sunderland fans trying to communciate through the medium of shrug was pretty funny, though.
Guest Norbert Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 That move has been compared to that team talk from Phil Brown. I can see why.
Blue blood Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Di Canio is too extreme though and a complete nut job, was always going to end badly. Agree - and said as much. Added in that he didn't have the financial muscle he had at Swindon (or rather the excess he and the board got away with through rank bad financial management) plus the fear factor doesn't work so well when players are on long contracts of big money - it was always going to be a disaster. Not sure he'll get another job - someone would be really daft to appoint him. Premier league - his man management is suicidal, lower leagues, the same can be said for his spending.

If I was a millionaire footballer I definitely would'nt take any crap from Kean or anyone of his ilk.
Stuart Posted September 28, 2013 Author Posted September 28, 2013 Both Manchester clubs currently losing to Villa and West Brom.
Audax Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Interesting day, Man Utd. though would lose to the Baggies at home. Villa wins. Hull defeating West Ham, WHU may now start to worry about form.
Guest Norbert Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 I wonder what the odds were on a Villa/West Brom double. Both Mancester teams are looking disappointing (and FC United lost at home to Whitby), and it is hard to pick a title challenger out of the rest. Perhaps Spurs might have a go.
