Mourhino is a disgrace.

It's clear to everyone that a penalty should never have been given but the Chelsea manager does what he's good at by annoying most people by stating it was "a clear penalty" and praises the ref. FA cannot do anything about the decision, nor would we want them to do since thats one reason why football is a great game, but I wish they could do something to punish Monurino for his comments.

I'm sure Roman will be thanking Mr Mariner as well. Maybe not with words, though.

In real time it looks borderline because of the way Reid throws his arms in the air it makes him look guilty, it's not a foul though

Very very very soft but in fairness another ref would have given a free kick for West Broms second.

West Brom were cheated out of a famous victory but why is anyone surprised ? The "big" clubs get most of the big decisions and have done for years. It happened to us when we were in the big league (sigh). The game is bent in favour of the elite but no one who matters has the guts to stand up and say it.

Look at it from the referees viewing angle and not the camera in the stands.

Marriner had a great view and trust me will be suitably embarrassed today. Not that it will be of any comfort to West Brom though. It was a really stupid appointment as he is from the Midlands and Aston Villa are his team. I don't think this had any bearing on the decision but it just feeds the conspiracy theorists.

Borderline? Surely refs need to be sure beyond doubt before they award a pen?

btw I saw a tussle for the ball not a foul on Ivanovic, I cant do with it when refs blow just cos a player who has lost the ball appeals to them.

You just did Jim.

Indeed he was full on from directly behind..... wonder why he didn't spot the Chelsea player drag a foot and begin to go to ground and prepare for the collision even before there was any contact?

Tell me arbitro... Now that Ramires has made him look such a poor referee and brought his character into question at the same time will Marriner seek revenge next time he refs him cos I'm damned sure that I damned well would. I'd tell him quietly on his own before the KO that he'd get nothing from me and if someone cut him in half with a waist high challenge I'd look the other way.

I never carried any grudges but it makes you acutely aware that player x has a propensity to dive. I actually saw myself as fair game when players deliberately tried to mislead me. The problem with turning a blind eye is that almost certainly the referee would be marked down by the assessor and certainly one of the club's.

Rovers had £2m from the Benni McCarthy sale, and the Trust were too tight to cover the difference for Lewandowski. The 'support' they gave to their managers in the latter years of their stewardship was a disgrace, imo.

Totally agree.

The worst one for me was the refusal to back Hughes in his pursuit of Diarra. A player who went on to join Madrid for 17 million.

Considering the money lavished on them over the years, City, Chelsea and Spurs are all an utter embarrassment. United are bang average this year but with these losers in front of them they could still easily make top 4.

The referee moves for a better viewing due to the packed area then in the blink of an eye suddenly an attacker goes down and forty thousand people scream penalty along with the players and a defender pleads his innocence - what would you have done ?

The referees viewing angle is straight on and not side on especially in a congested area which makes the task that little bit harder to make an accurate call.

The only criticism id have is that hes not got closer to following the Chelsea player into the box though just dont know the full circumstances to the build up play prior.

A bit harder to make an accurate call? Are you telling me you think he guessed. Remember this is the Premier League and not Pleasington. Reid held his arms up to emphasise that he hadn't touched Ramirez with them. Ramirez forced the contact in an attempt to deceive the referee.

No im not saying hes guessed just asking you what would you have done in the same situation and do you think his angle and position are good from an assessors point of view.

Angle and position is very good. He had a clear sight on the incident. imo there cannot be guesswork involved in awarding a penalty, it has to bang to rights with no doubts. imo the crowd and the occasion have swayed his judgement ..... that is unless Abromovich has.

I think he had a good position. There is the human element to factor in and he completely misread the situation. I awarded a penalty in one game and a player who I had great respect for said to me "you didn't give yourself enough thinking time". He was absolutely correct and had I waited player reaction would have told me I was wrong. I was embarrassed when I saw the DVD.

Difference is you are/were an amateur ref (I assume!). Mariner is a supposedly professional referee at the highest level, who also has 3 assistants backing him up. Absolutely no way any official at that level should be getting such an easy decision wrong. It's beyond embarrassing.

The game I referred to was a Football League match.

Fair enough, I didn't realise you were a professional ref! Nonetheless at Mariner's level he still shouldn't be getting that decision wrong.

I agree but our £8m striker shouldn't miss open goals like he did yesterday.

I didn't see the match so can't comment, however to compare the two Rhodes would have had to essentially missed from 1 yard out right in the middle of the goal - the decision was that bad.

I would argue 'missed' isn't a good comparison. Maybe if he put such a shot out for a throw-in.
